They can easily get caught up with what they re having for dinner or what they will wear. Often it is a tragedy that helps people to refocus on what is really important. What I shall wear is an irrelevant question when I am facing surgery or chemotherapy. What s for dinner is immaterial to those living through grief or unemployment. In today s Gospel, Jesus tells us not to worry. He doesn t say, Don t eat. Don t cook. Don t buy clothes. He says, Don t worry. Jesus asks us not to relinquish our responsibilities but to let go of our anxiety. We know exactly when he died, yet we celebrate his death and resurrection on a different date every year. What kind of madness is this? Since we don t know when exactly Christ was born, the day that eventually came to be celebrated is December 25th, replacing the pagan feasts of that date. Unlike His birth, we do know the day that Christ died. It was the 15th of Nisan in the Jewish calendar. Unlike our calendar, which is based on the cycle of the earth around the sun with one day added every fourth year (Leap Year), the Jewish calendar is based on the cycle of the moon around the earth. Thus, Jewish months keep changing on our calendar. Then, to make up for the change and not get too far behind, they add a month every four years. As a result, the 15th of Nisan can vary from the third week of March to the last week of April. To confuse things even more, the Catholic decided that Christ rose on a Sunday, and His resurrection is commemorated on the first Sunday after the 15th of Nisan. In 2008, it was on March 23rd, just one day from the earliest possible date, and in 2011 it was on April 25th, one day from the latest possible date. Adding to the confusion is the difference between the eastern churches and the western churches. The eastern churches are on the Julian calendar, the calendar of ancient Rome. There is a difference of 13 days between their calendar and ours. On their calendar, our range of Easter dates is from March 9 to April 12. On our calendar, their range is from April 4 to May 8. Leading up to Easter, we have Lent, 40 days of fasting and abstinence from Ash Wednesday until Easter Sunday. However, if you count the days on the calendar, you will note that there are 47 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. That is because Sundays are the day of the Lord and are not part of Lent. At one time, everyone over the age of seven had to fast/abstain from meat on all Wednesdays of Lent and every Friday of the year. Now the only ones required to fast and abstain are those over the age of fourteen and they only have to do it on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent. Unless, of course, you are 60 or older, in which case you have to abstain but not fast. Abstaining from meat on Fridays dates back to the earliest days of the church. Since Jesus died on Friday, anything coming from flesh was given up to recall the sacrifice of His flesh. Through the Middle Ages, the practices became more and more severe, with Saturday s also becoming days of fast and abstinence. But since Vatican II there has been an easing of the laws of fasting and abstinence, at least in part as an attempt to not have too many things between us and other Christian sects in the hope that we shall one day all be reunited.
