The CHURCH of the COVENANT THE WORSHIP OF GOD THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 2016 MAUNDY THURSDAY 7:30 PM THE LORD S SUPPER THE ANCIENT ORDER OF TENEBRAE * All who are able are invited to stand. THE MCGAFFIN CARILLON GEORGE LEGGIERO Covenant Carillonneur PRELUDE Louange à l'éternité de Jésus OLIVIER MESSIAEN Praise to the eternity of Jesus Jonathan Moyer, piano from Quartet for the End of Time David Ellis, cello In the beginning was the Word, and Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1 INTROIT Tantum ergo JEHAN ALAIN Cicely Schonberg, soprano Lynne Hoffman-Engel, mezzo-soprano Tantum ergo Sacramentum Veneremur cernui: Hence so great a Sacrament let us venerate with heads bowed: Et antiquum documentum Novo cedat ritui: And let the old practice give way to the new rite; Præstet fides supplementum Sensuum defectui. Let faith provide a supplement for the failure of the senses. Genitori, Genitoque Laus et jubilatio, To the begetter and the begotten be praise and jubilation, Salus, honor, virtus quoque Sit et benedictio: Hail, honor, virtue also, and blessing too: Procedenti ab utroque compa sit laudatio. Amen. To the one proceeding from both let there be equal praise. Amen.

* THE CALL TO WORSHIP THE REV. AMY STARR REDWINE One: Come and remember the love of Jesus, gathered at table with his friends. Al: We come to receive from Christ the bread of life, the cup of blessing. Come, receive the tender service Christ offers each of us; We come to receive the challenge of the new commandment: Love one another as I have loved you." Come and contemplate the many temptations of a world that would entice us to betray the trust of a suffering God. We come to reflect on the cost of discipleship, and to travel with Jesus the way of the Cross. * HYMN 76 My Song Is Love Unknown LOVE UNKNOWN * CALL TO CONFESSION THE REV. EILEEN F. VIZCAÍNO * CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION Holy and gracious God, left to ourselves, our sin, like the cross of Jesus, is too heavy to bear. Trusting in your mercy, we lay before you the truth of who we are. When called to follow you, we often do so only at a distance. Accused of being one of yours, we deny it. On this holy night we confess our weakness before temptation, we confess letting the sword of anger rule over peace and kindness, and letting the world s enticements steal the hour we might spend with you. Forgive us, merciful God. Heal us, and make us whole, for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior, in whose name we pray. * PRIVATE CONFESSION OF SIN * KYRIE MERBECKE All are invited to sing. * DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS One: Hear the Good News! Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, that we might be dead to sin and alive to all that is good. Let us affirm together, All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

* RESPONSE O LAMM GOTTES All are invited to sing. Hymn 82, v. 3 O Lamb of God most holy! Who on the cross did suffer, And patient still and lowly, yourself to scorn did offer; Our sins by you were taken, or hope had us forsaken: Your peace be with us, Jesus! PSALTER LESSON PSALM 22: SELECTED VERSES The Rev. Melanie Marsh Baum * HYMN 98 O Sacred Head, Now Wounded PASSION CHORALE HEBREW LESSON ISAIAH 53:1 6 INVITATION TO THE OFFERING OFFERTORY Sarabande from Suite No. 5 in C minor JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH for Solo Cello David Ellis, cello * HYMN 94 An Upper Room Did Our Lord Prepare O WALY WALY THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION As a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA), the Church of the Covenant observes open communion. All who confess their faith in Jesus Christ as Sovereign and Savior, as well as their children, are invited to partake. Please hold the cup so that we may partake together, symbolizing our unity in Christ. To symbolize our calling to minister to one another, as you pass the tray of cups to the person seated beside you, please say, May the Spirit of God be with you. As you are served, please respond, And with you also. The wine of communion is unfermented grape juice. INVITATION AMY STARR REDWINE GREAT THANKSGIVING One: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is truly right and our greatest joy to give you thanks and praise...with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of your name:

TOLLING OF THE BELL The congregation is asked to leave the sanctuary in silence in preparation for Good Friday and the joy of Easter. 4 Convinced of God s Grace, the Church of the Covenant seeks to: Be a welcoming spiritual home, Live God s inclusive love, Express Christ s compassion, Do justice in the world.

ABOUT OUR SERVICE THE ANCIENT SERVICE OF TENEBRAE, which dates from the 8th century, commemorates the suffering and death of Christ. It is a dramatic retelling of the Passion story that impresses one with the awful consequences of sin and the magnitude of Jesus s sacrifice. It concludes with the Great Bourdon Bell tolling once for each year of Christ s life. Tenebrae is a Latin word meaning darkness. The triangular candle stand is called the hearse. The name is derived, through the French herse, from the Latin herpex, which means a harrow (consisting of many spikes). The symbolism, which dates back at least as far as the seventh century, varies. The triangle itself is said to be a symbol of the trinity, with the uppermost candle representing Christ, the light of the world, and with the gradual extinguishing of the other candles symbolizing the waning faith and desertion of his disciples. HEARSE DESIGN: The creator of the hearse you see is Ken Roby of the Village Blacksmith in Chagrin Falls. He and Catherine C. Miller designed this hearse (triangle candle stand) to the exact measurements and candle placements as a rustic wooden hearse used since Fine Arts and Memorials funds made this possible. Mr. Roby is the metal smith who also crafted the All Saints Columbarium cross. The cross was designed by Mrs. Miller in memory of the Reverend Albert L. Jeandheur, during whose pastorate Covenant began to observe Maundy Thursday with this order of service. PARTICIPATING IN THE SERVICE OF TENEBRAE and as communion servers are Nancy Acree, Clint Fowler Patty Fowler, Bob Jefferis, Marie Jones, Jim Mate, Dick Miller, and Jim Tomaszewski. Serving Communion to the choir are Mary Anne Bromelmeier and Jennifer Conner. David and Stephanie Finkenthal and Fred Mailey are doing the sanctuary lighting and sound, and Patty Fowler is Tenebrae coordinator. Thank you to Willie Parker for his assistance and for Denise Horstman for the photograph on this bulletin. USHERS THIS EVENING are Keith Kallay, Suchi Nelson, Jim Prince, Nancy Smekal, and Paul Williams. GREETERS are Helen Kunsman and Debbie Rorick. ABOUT OUR MUSIC: Our service this evening features some of the most poignant music of the liturgical year. All of the choral music is from the pen of the French composer Maurice Duruflé ( ), two motets in the communion service, Notre Père and Ubi Caritas (based on the antiphon chant for Maundy Thursday) and two movements from his Requiem Mass of 1947, Agnus Dei and Lux Aeterna. The choir along with the Case Concert Choir will present the complete work on Friday, April 15, at 8:00pm. Two other French contemporaries of Duruflé are featured for the prelude and introit, Olivier Messiaen s serene Louange à l'éternité de Jésus (Praise to the eternity of Jesus) from his Quartet for the End of Time, composed in 1941 when Messiaen was a prisoner in the Nazi concentration camp in Görlitz. Jehan Alain composed his communion motet Tantum ergo in 1938, and it received its first performance in the Parisian church La Trinité where Messiaen was organist. We welcome cellist and Cleveland native David Ellis to our service this evening.

Welcome! We are thrilled that you have chosen to join us for worship at the Church of the Covenant. For over one hundred years, we have sought to be a welcoming spiritual home, live God s inclusive love, express Christ s compassion, and do justice in the world. As a diverse community, we find unity in our shared identity as Jesus' disciples and in our desire to put God s love into action within and beyond these walls. Whether you are a student, here with a patient in the hospital, visiting from out of town, looking for a church home, or a decades-long member, may you experience the wonder of God s presence as we worship together!
