Activities packets are available for any children remaining in worship. WE WELCOME Dr. Marilyn Sanders Mobley back to Covenant s pulpit. She will also be leading a conversation at 11:30am today. A published author and Toni Morrison scholar, Dr. Mobley is the Vice President for Inclusion, Diversity and Equal Opportunity and Professor of English at Case Western Reserve University. She provides strategic leadership for the university-wide effort to develop and sustain a welcoming environment for faculty, students, staff and alumni. Her efforts have been widely recognized since her appointment in 2009 and she serves as a trustee for the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Cuyahoga County Public Library Foundation, and Women of Hope, a non-profit organization devoted to assisting women seeking to reenter their communities. In January 2013, Dr. Mobley was elected to serve on the board of the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education. MUSIC NOTES: We welcome long-time member Ed Pembroke as soloist to our service this morning. Ed began attending Covenant with his mother, Wini Buford, in He has sung in youth and adult choirs, served as a Deacon, and worked here as a parking-lot attendant for 11 years. Covenant is my church home, Ed says, now father of four and grandfather of 5. I am blessed. LAY WORSHIP LEADER TODAY is Orene Anthony. Orene has been a part of the Covenant community for over a decade. She is an EfM grad, has served as a deacon, is a member of the Adult Education and Black History Committee and a Lay Worship Leader. 6 DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS, children and youth will participate in a Summer of Growing, with the garden as their classroom, weather permitting. Experienced gardeners from our congregation, along with parents, will be their guides. The crèche for infants through pre-kindergarten age children is open from 9:30am through 12:00pm unless otherwise noted. STEPHEN MINISTERS are church members trained to support individuals who are facing difficulties and would like a caring Christian presence during this struggle. You are invited to visit with a Stephen Minister in Christ Chapel following worship today. JUNETEENTH CONVERSATION TODAY AT 11:30AM, BECKWITH HALL: Dr. Mobley will facilitate a conversation, "Courageous Conversations about Race and Freedom" at 11:30am in Beckwith Hall. Juneteenth commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States when on June 19, 1865, Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation with news that the war had ended and the enslaved were now free. SINCE A GUNMAN opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012, killing 26 people, 20 of them children; 394 people in Cuyahoga County have been killed by guns. Since last month, 13 more individuals have died by gun violence in Cuyahoga County. The names of those at least 18 years of age are Dawn Marie Welch, Hayward A. Daniels Jr., Scott T. Wenger, Orlando Lamont Gray, Pajo Romeris Barnes Jr., Dominique Darshon Vinson, Michael D. Mathews, Charles T. Knipp, Chad M. Hagan Sr., Matthew A. Franko, Gary Robert O Brien, and TyRell D. Pratt. A 15 year-old also died. Four of those who died were by suicide. SUMMER MUSIC COURSES: Rudiments of Music Reading and Vocal Skills for Singing and Reading, led by Jonathan Moyer and Kaori Hongo, can help you hone your skills in both music reading and use of your vocal instrument (perfect for both lay readers and singers). Sign up by today in the narthex. Each class will meet for four 30-minute sessions before or following select Sunday services. Deadline to sign up is today.
