March 29, 2018: Maundy Thursday at 7:00pm Welcome! Wherever you are on your journey of faith, there is a place for you at Holy Communion. Opening Hymn: standing As In That Upper Room

Collect for Purity Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins; God s mercy endures for ever. Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Trisagion Sung three times The Collect of the Day The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty Father, whose dear Son, on the night before he suffered, instituted the Sacrament of his Body and Blood: Mercifully grant that we may receive it thankfully in remembrance of Jesus Christ our Lord, who in these holy mysteries gives us the pledge of eternal life; and who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. 1st Lesson Please be seated. Exodus 12:1-14 The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron in Egypt: "This month is to be the first month of the year for you. Give these instructions to the whole community of Israel: On the tenth day of this month each man must choose either a lamb or a young goat for his 2

household. If his family is too small to eat a whole animal, he and his next-door neighbor may share an animal, in proportion to the number of people and the amount that each person can eat. You are to eat it quickly, for you are to be dressed for travel, with your sandals on your feet and your walking stick in your hand. It is the Passover Festival to honor me, the Lord. "On that night I will go through the land of Egypt, killing every first-born male, both human and animal, and punishing all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord. The blood on the doorposts will be a sign to mark the houses in which you live. When I see the blood, I will pass over you and will not harm you when I punish the Egyptians. You must celebrate this day as a religious festival to remind you of what I, the Lord, have done. Celebrate it for all time to come." The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Sequence: Please stand Come bring your Burdens to God Traditional Xhosa The congregation is invited to sing the sequence before the Gospel reading. arr. John Bell The Gospel Standing John 13:1-17, 31b-35 The holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him. And during supper Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" Jesus answered, "You do not know now what I am doing, but 3

later you will understand." Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no share with me." Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!" Jesus said to him, "One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you." For he knew who was to betray him; for this reason he said, "Not all of you are clean." After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them." Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, `Where I am going, you cannot come.' I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The congregation is invited to sing the sequence after the Gospel reading. The Homily seated The Rev. Marc Smith The Washing of Feet Don t be shy! Approach any station and take a seat. Remove your shoes and socks. After your feet are washed, if you would like to wash feet, tap the shoulder of the person washing your feet. 4

Anthem Tantum ergo Martha Shaffer Tantum ergo sacramentum veneremur cernui; Et antiquum documentum novo cedat ritui; Praestet fides supplementum sesuum defectui. Genitori, genitoque laus et iubilatio, Salus, honor, virtus quoque sit et benedictio; Procedenti ab utroque compar sit laudatio. Amen. Down in adoration falling, lo! the sacred Host we hail; Lo! o'er ancient forms departing, newer rites of grace prevail; Faith for all defects supplying where the feeble senses fail. To the everlasting Father and the Son who reigns on high With the Holy Spirit proceeding forth from each eternally, Be salvation, honor, blessing, might, and endless majesty. Amen. Congregational Hymn Sung by all, kneeling or sitting. Ubi caritas (below in Latin, from Wonder, Love and Praise hymnal) The Peace Please stand The peace of the Lord be always with you. Celebrant Preacher Assisting Lectors Chalice Crucifer & Chalice Worship Leaders The Rev. Mike Angell The Rev. Marc Smith The Rev. Chester Hines Ellis Anderson, Josephine Ezenwa Mary Haggerty Scott Ferguson Reception following the Great Vigil of Easter: If you ve never been to a Vigil, we encourage you to participate this year. The ancient moment when dark turns to light and we shout Alleluia for the first time in Easter, when we exclaim that light has overcome darkness, life has overcome death, Jesus is Risen: There is no moment more beautiful and more mysteriously joyful in the Christian life If you need additional incentive, the festivities aren t just about worship. After the Vigil we will pop corks on sparkling beverages. You re invited to bring your favorite chocolate or other treat to share. 11

Good Friday, March 30 We encounter the greatest mystery of our faith, when the cross of death becomes the tree of life. 12:00pm Spoken Service 5:30pm Children s Service: The Stations of Holy Week 7:00pm Choral Service Holy Saturday, March 31 This is the most beautiful, the most sacred, the most mysterious liturgy of the whole year. 9:00pm The Great Vigil of Easter Alleluia! Christ is Risen! Easter Sunday, April 1 8:00 am Spoken Eucharist 10:30am Choral Eucharist 11:45am Easter Egg Hunt for children age 12 & under Maundy Thursday On Maundy Thursday we gather to celebrate Eucharist, to remember Jesus, and to wash one another s feet. We remember the two commands (Maundy is the Old English for mandate or command. ) After the Eucharist, we reserve the sacrament in the font, decorated to reminds us of the garden of Gethsemane where Jesus went to pray after the Last Supper. Some of the congregation may choose to pray awhile with the reserve sacrament on Thursday night. The service will conclude with stripping the altar, taking away every decoration that isn t bolted down. We empty the sanctuary to prepare ourselves for the stark reality of Good Friday. This service finishes without a blessing or dismissal, reminding us that Thursday is but one part of the liturgy of Holy Week 12
