2 *CALL TO WORSHIP THE REV. EILEEN F. VIZCAINO One: The heavens are telling the glory of God - All: and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard - yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O God, Our rock and Our redeemer. * HYMN 487 When Morning Gilds the Skies LAUDES DOMINI * CALL TO CONFESSION SARAH STARR REDWINE * CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION Dear Jesus, we come to you today as empty water pots wanting to be filled with your blessings so we can give to others, but we know that sometimes we are selfish with what you give us. Forgive us, Lord, for not always having the eyes to see you, the ears to hear you, the heart to follow you, or the voice to speak of your love and forgiveness. We ask you to change us to be more like you, and to help us use the gifts you have given to us in order to help others. Now, as we offer grace to ourselves and others, will you forgive us as we silently pray. * PRIVATE CONFESSION OF SIN (in silence) * DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS One: All: Hear the Good News! If we confess our sin, God is faithful and just, forgiving and transforming our lives. Friends, believe the good news. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. * GLORIA PATRI HYMN 579 Glory be to the Father** and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. **or Maker PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION FIRST LESSON 1 CORINTHIANS 12: 4 11

Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law: yea, I shall keep it with my whole heart. Make me to go in the path of thy commandments: for therein is my desire. Incline my heart unto thy testimonies: and not to covetousness. O turn away mine eyes, lest they behold vanity: and quicken thou me in thy way. O stablish thy word in thy servant: that I may fear thee. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning is now and every shall be, world without end. Amen. Psalm 119 TIME FOR YOUNG DISCIPLES FOOD COLLECTION Mindy Stewart PARTING RESPONSE All are invited to sing as the children and youth depart for Sunday School. 5 JANUARY 24, 2016 WORSHIP, 10:00 (food collection) SUNDAY SCHOOL, 10:15 COFFEE AND FELLOWSHIP, Reception Room, 11:00 STUDENT BRUNCH, Narthex, 11:00 ADULT EDUCATION FORUM, Beckwith Hall, 11:30 4TH THROUGH 7TH GRADERS; Living Room, 11:30 WELCOME WE WELCOME ALL WHO HAVE COME TO WORSHIP at the Church of the Covenant. If you are interested in exploring additional opportunities or inquiring about church membership, please contact Amy Starr Redwine at or Melanie Marsh Baum at MUSIC NOTES: Our music this Sunday sings forth from the rear gallery of the sanctuary, featuring baroque works from German, English, and Italian sources. The introit Non nobis, Domine was for many years attributed to William Byrd, but new scholarship points the authorship to the Dutch composer Philip van Wilder (c ). William Byrd's remarkable career spanned the tumultuous 16th century in England where Protestant and Roman Catholic allegiances were in constant fluctuation. Through it all, Byrd produced some of the most numerous and highly refined compositions of the renaissance. His anthem, Teach me O Lord, alternates soloist and choir between verses of Psalm 119. The offertory Cantate Domino is one of the most popular anthems of the Italian baroque composer Giuseppe Pitoni ( ). Both the organ prelude and organ postlude come from German contemporaries of Pitoni, Johann Sebastian Bach ( ) from Leipzig and Matthias Weckmann ( ) from Hamburg. OUR STUDENT LAY WORSHIP LEADER is Sarah Starr Redwine, who is the eldest of three kids to Amy and Derek Starr Redwine. Sarah is in the 4th grade at Urban Oak School in Cleveland Heights, and participates in the 4th through 7th grade group at Church of the Covenant when she's not involved in activities at Fairmount Presbyterian Church. Her hobbies include reading and drawing. If you would like to become a lay worship leader, please contact Gale Bromelmeier at or at galebrom@aol.com. TODAY THE CHILDREN COLLECT FOOD for the Covenant Food Pantry. The Pantry is open the last Wednesday and Friday morning each month as well as for emergencies that might arise during the month. Financial donations are also welcome. FOLLOWING A TIME FOR YOUNG DISCIPLES, the children leave for Sunday School to begin their studies for Youth Sunday. The crèche is open for infants through pre-kindergarten from 9:30am to 12:30pm. FLOWERS IN THE CHANCEL TODAY are presented to the glory of God and by Mary Anne Bromelmeier s family in memory of Jim and Julia Fiorenzo, whose birthdays are January 22 and 25; by Barbara Davidson in memory of her father, John, whose birthday is January 27; and by Marilyn Demeter, in memory of her husband, Thomas, whose birthday is January 28.
