1 The CHURCH of the COVENANT THE WORSHIP OF GOD SUNDAY, AUGUST 16, 2015 TWELFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST 10:00 AM ORDER OF WORSHIP *All who are able are invited to stand. THE MCGAFFIN CARILLON GEORGE LEGGIERO THE NEWBERRY ORGAN Schmücke dich, O liebe Seele, BWV 654 JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH Dr. Jonathan Moyer, organ WELCOME ASSOCIATE PASTOR NOMINATING COMMITTEE THE REVEREND AMY STARR REDWINE SYBIL MARSH * CELEBRATION OF COMMUNITY * INTROIT For the Beauty of the Earth DIX All are invited to sing. For thyself, best gift divine to the world so freely given; for that great, great love of thine, peace on earth and joy in heaven: Lord of all, to thee we raise, this our hymn of grateful praise. Text from the new Presbyterian Hymnal, Glory to God * CALL TO WORSHIP MINDY STEWART One: Look to the mountains; look to the hills! All: Love comes to us with joy! The world is filled with beauty. Flowers appear on the earth, birdsong brightens the day. Crops yield their produce in abundance, the air is filled with sweetness. The summer of God s love is with us. Let the oil of gladness anoint your souls. Arise and sing for joy!
2 * HYMN 267 All Things Bright and Beautiful ROYAL OAK * CALL TO CONFESSION ANN WILLIAMS * CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION Gracious God, we confess that we are not always obedient to you and your ways. Forgive us when we are sometimes hesitant to do what we know to be right. Forgive us when we may be fearful or doubtful in following the lessons which your Son, Jesus Christ, taught us about compassion and understanding. All too often we are caught up in the trends of the day, or more concerned with what others may think of us. Forgive us our pride, calm our fears and transform us into trusting disciples. Help us to use daily opportunities to listen with our hearts and be open to the power of your spirit. Renew us by the power of your love to find joy in following your way. Forgive us as we silently confess our sins. * PRIVATE CONFESSION OF SIN (in silence) * DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS One: Hear the Good News! If we confess our sin, God is faithful and just, forgiving and transforming our lives. All: Friends, believe the good news of the gospel. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. * GLORIA PATRI HYMN 579 Glory be to the Father** and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. **or Maker PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION FIRST LESSON LUKE 7:36-50 ANTHEM Love bade me welcome RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS from Five Mystical Songs Timothy LeFebvre, baritone Love bade me welcome: yet my soul drew back. Guilty of dust and sin. But quick-eyed Love, observing me grow slack from my first entrance in, drew nearer to me, sweetly questioning if I lack'd anything. A guest, I answered, worthy to be here: Love said, You shall be he. I the unkind, ungrateful? Ah, my dear, I cannot look on thee. Love took my hand, and smiling did reply, who made the eyes but I? Truth Lord, but I have marred them: let my shame go where it doth deserve. And know you not, says Love, who bore the blame? My dear, then I will serve. You must sit down, says Love, and taste my meat: So I did sit and eat. Text by George Herbert from The Temple: Sacred Poems (1633)
3 SECOND LESSON SONG OF SOLOMON 2:10 13; 8:6 7 One: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Servers will bring the elements to those who are unable to come forward. The wine of communion is unfermented grape juice. INVITATION TO THE TABLE EILEEN VIZCAINO GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING One Voice: All Voices: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to God. It is right to give both thanks and praise. AMY STARR REDWINE THE LORD'S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen WORDS OF INSTITUTION AMY STARR REDWINE COMMUNION BY INTINCTION PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION EILEEN VIZCAINO INVITATION TO THE OFFERING

Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength: Such a Light, as shows a feast: Such a Feast, as mends in length: Such a Strength, as makes his guest.
