2 From the Pastor HOLY PENANCE The sixth and ninth commandments have the same subject: how we use our emotions and bodies to glorify God by human love. The commands are negative (You shall not commit adultery, you shall not covet your neighbor s wife), but that is only to safeguard a gift: once of the greatest blessings of God is that of human sexuality, which affects all aspects of the human person in the unity of his body and soul. It especially concerns affectivity, the capacity to love and to procreate. The Book of Genesis says, Male and female God created them. He blessed them and said, be fruitful and multiply. In order to be fruitful and multiply, a man leaves his mother and father and clings to his wife. Thus did the Lord Jesus establish the sacrament of Marriage. It has been the unchanging teaching of the Church that only in a marriage between one man and one woman is human sexuality in its fullness rightly expressed, that is, in body and in spirit. One the other hand, nothing is as dangerous to the Christian life as the misuse of this great gift. No other aspect of our human nature leads us so easily to the sins of anger, lying, and deceit. When human sexuality is not controlled and channeled by the grace of the sacrament of Matrimony, we are always being tempted to make an object of another human being for our own bodily pleasure. Adultery, the violation of the sacramental marriage bond, is the worst instance of this, but not the only one, If I am with someone, am I married? If I am married, is it a marriage blessed by the Church? Have I engaged in sexual behavior outside of Christian marriage? The list can go on, but a bulletin is not the place. Just keep this in mind: never be afraid to tell the priest any such sin you may have committed. Do not hide or try to disguise it. The priest is there to help you and forgive you. He is as human as you and fights these same battles! Nothing you say will shock him, so do not be afraid, no matter how ashamed you might be. Saint of the Week 16 June Saint Benno of Meissen Benno was born in 1010 of noble parents in Hildesheim, present-day Germany. He became a monk and was then named Bishop of Meissen. Although Benno began his ministry in the good graces of the secular powers, he soon fell into disfavor for supporting Pope Saint Gregory VII against the Holy Roman Emperor, Henry IV. This set the scene for the most famous incident in Benno s life. After Henry IV was excommunicated by the pope, Benno guessed that he would come to Meissen with an army and demand to receive Holy Communion. Benno commanded that the doors of the cathedral be locked and the keys tossed into the River Elbe. The emperor did in fact come, and finding the doors locked against him, left. Afterwards, Benno asked a fisherman to toss his nets into the river. The fish that was caught had the keys of the cathedral in its mouth. Paintings of Benno almost always include the fish and the keys. For a time, Benno suffered exile for his support of the pope. He preached to the Wends, the last pagan people in Europe, until he was able to return to his flock. Benno died in 1106, at the age of ninety-six. He was canonized in 1523, at the beginning of the Protestant Revolt, a move that infuriated Martin Luther himself. When Messien became Lutheran in 1580, Benno s relics were moved to Munich. He is one of many patron saints of fishermen. Saint Benno of Meissen, pray for us! Respect Life Ministry [I]t is important to realize that Christ s love is not a superficial feeling, no; it is a fundamental attitude of the heart which is manifested in living as he wishes Jesus asks us to follow his commandments, which are summarized in the following: that you love one another as I have loved you (Jn 15:12)...this love for the other cannot be reserved for exceptional moments, but must be constant in our lives. That is why we are called, for example, to safeguard the elderly like a precious treasure and with love even if they cause economic difficulties and inconveniences, but we must safeguard them. This is why we must give all the assistance possible to the sick, even in the final stages. This is why unborn children are always to be welcomed; this is why, ultimately, life is always to be protected and loved, from conception to its natural end. And this is love. ~Pope Francis, Regina Caeli, May 6, 2018 Respect Life Prayer Intention: For all people; may God grant us courage to embrace his precious gift of life, even in the most difficult circumstances. Sincere thanks to all who participated in the Mother s Day Rose Drive. All proceeds will help Massachusetts Citizens for Life in their pro-life work. Your generosity is much appreciated. The 2018 Massachusetts March for Life is Sunday, June 17 on Boston Common. All are welcome to attend. Visit
