2 From the Pastor The Six Commandments The First Commandment of the Church is that we assist at Mass on all Sundays and holydays of obligation. It echoes and elaborates the Third Commandment, Remember to keep holy the Lord s Day. This is a grave obligation for anyone who is not impeded from attending Mass by sickness or some other serious reason. Not so very long ago, Sunday mornings were absolutely sacred in our society. No one would think of scheduling a practice or a game at this time: Sunday morning was for churchgoing and nothing else. Since this is no longer the case, we need to set our priorities ourselves and be sure to go to Mass. Holydays of obligation are equal in importance to Sundays; there are only six of them throughout the year: Mary, Mother of God on January 1st, the Ascension on November 1st, The Immaculate Conception on December 8th, and Christmas. Worship God as he commands us to worship him and, in the process, get an hour of peace and beauty like no other. Saint of the Week 7 August Saint Afra of Augsburg Afra s holy death is recorded in a fourth century catalogue of the church s martyrs. According to legend, Afra was a career prostitute, one of the young girls attending the temple of Venus. One day a Christian man arrived at her door seeking shelter from the Roman soldiers who were pursuing him. He was Bishop Narcissus of Gerona in Spain. Afra agreed to let Narcissus take refuge in her home. Soon she found herself captivated by the bishop s words, and asked to be baptized. When the authorities learned of Afra s conversion, they immediately arrested her. The prefect tried to convince her to sacrifice to the pagan gods of Rome, by suggesting that she, as a prostitute, could not hope to be loved by the Christian God. But Afra would have none of it. She threw herself entirely upon God s mercy, remembering the kindness of Jesus to Mary Magdalene and to the woman at the well. She refused, she said, to compound her earlier sins of the flesh by now renouncing Christ. She was sentenced to be burned alive, and died on an island in the river Lech amid the suffocating smoke. Her mother, Hilaria, and thee household slaves followed her to glory. Saint Afra of Augsburg, pray for us! The food pantry is available to anyone in need on Thursdays 10:00am-12:00pm or by appointment. Pawsox tickets are once again available in the Parish office for the current month.
