Catholic Charities Appeal May 1st began the 2013 Catholic Charities Annual Appeal for the Diocese of Fall River. 3 SJN Parish Finance Council SJN Book Club meets Pope Francis The Parish Finance Council is a consultative body of lay persons established to advise the Pastor in matters pertaining to the financial affairs of the parish. The relationship between the Pastor and the council is one of support and collaboration. When a new pastor is installed at a parish, the current pastoral and finance councils cease to exist. A new pastor must form his own council. We are pleased to introduce our finance council members: Rev. Gregory A. Abuse Prevention Training The Abuse Prevention Training for all those over the age of 17 who are parish volunteers will be held Wednesday, June 26th in Neumann Hall at 6:30 pm. This training is for the new Eucharistic Ministers and anybody who in their ministry MAY come in contact with children and have not undergone the Abuse Prevention Training. Anybody who needs a CORI update can do so at this time. Please bring your drivers license. This is a diocesan regulation. The Learning Leadership Academy (LLA) teaches students in grades 1 thru 8 how to communicate, cooperate, collaborate, have compassion and courage, solving conflicts and building commitments with peers. Cathedral Camp Cathedral Camp, owned and operated by the Diocese of Fall River, is a day camp for children between the ages of 4 and 14. 4 The Holy Rosary Fraternity of the Secular Franciscan's of Taunton are pleased to announce a featured speaker at our July meeting. Sr. Eleanor McNally, SUSC will speak on the topic of Human Trafficking on Sunday July 14th at 2:30 pm at Holy Rosary Parish Center, 80 Bay St., Taunton. All are welcome. The award was presented at last week s 9:30 Mass. This year s award was accepted by Katie Correia. Thank you for your service to our parish. Camping Trip ---- Well the time is almost here!! You have probably already started packing your gear. If you are interested in going camping with us and you haven t given us your deposit, now is the time to reserve your spot. We are going to Ellis Haven in Plymouth. We will be leaving the Youth Ministry office at 1:00 on Fri. July 19 th and returning on Mon. July 22 nd at around 1:00. The cost of the trip is $ all inclusive. Join us for some Fun in the Sun and a good time with friends. We need a $25.00 Deposit now so that we can plan for the weekend. It will take place the weekend of July 13 and 14, 2013 from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. The camp provides opportunities for kids and teens to explore their many feelings about grief in a therapeutic way and helps them be compassionate towards others. James Doran from the Oblates of the Virgin Mary will be at our parish on the weekend of June 29-30th for the Annual Missionary Cooperative. He will be sharing with us the work that is being done in Cebu, Philippines by the Oblate Priests. Cebu is an island in the middle part of the Philippines and belongs to the island group called Visayas.

5 Zeal to consume us The stories of Apostles, Martyrs, and other heroic figures of the Church s long history always confront me as a sharp challenge. For instance, I write this on the feast day of St. Barnabas, the Apostle: Here was a zealous messenger of the Christian faith who rejoiced when he came upon a vibrant community of converts in the city of Antioch, (Acts 11:23). He didn t put a check mark on a checklist, or give a simple nod of approval to the fact of these converts, rather, he rejoiced. Do we rejoice at the fact of converts to Catholic Christianity? Is it more important to us than almost anything else? I would say Probably not. For one thing, we don t live in a religious culture which is exclusivist, (e.g. The people in the Church will go to heaven, and those outside will not.) Quite the contrary, the modern way of thinking is radically inclusivist... everybody makes it according to their own preferred belief system and lifestyle. So as not to offend anybody, we are tempted to think, At the end of the day, all religions and beliefs are the same: They are different roads leading to the same city. Barnabas and his buddy Paul didn t think this to be the case: They broke their backs traveling through Asia Minor and Greece trying to bring about conversions to Christ. Where is our zeal to save people? The so-called born again Christians seem to have this zeal! By contrast, we Catholics seem to have a live and let live reputation: Generally speaking, we are not knocking on doors and handing out literature. As you might perceive, I struggle with this matter as a student of the Gospel and a product of my specific experience. On the one hand, the imperative of the Gospel to go to all nations and to unashamedly bear witness needs to be taken seriously: We need to challenge ourselves in this area. On the other hand, our culture is a very noisy market place of competing ideas and beliefs. Everyone is trying to sell you a bill of goods, so who do you believe? The Second Vatican Council address this issue in a document called the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, (Lumen Gentium, in Latin). It says the following: Those also can attain to salvation who through no fault of their own do not know the Gospel of Christ or His Church, yet sincerely seek God and moved by grace strive by their deeds to do His will as it is known to them through the dictates of conscience.(19*) Nor does Divine Providence deny the helps necessary for salvation to those who, without blame on their part, have not yet arrived at an explicit knowledge of God and with His grace strive to live a good life. Whatever good or truth is found amongst them is looked upon by the Church as a preparation for the Gospel. [Nevertheless] The Church has received this solemn mandate of Christ to proclaim the saving truth from the apostles and must carry it out to the very ends of the earth.(133) Wherefore she makes the words of the Apostle her own: "Woe to me, if I do not preach the Gospel" Here the guiding principles are fairly clear: It simply cannot be that all religions are the same... different roads leading to the same city. The claims of Christ to be the only Son of God do not allow us to say this. On the other hand, we can only propose the faith and inivite others by a sincere display in our lives of conviction about the Gospel. In some way it should be evident. We shouldn t just blend in to the secular culture as if our Faith makes no difference to everyday life or is just a personal and private matter. St. Barnabas... Pray for Us
