The next meeting of the Holy Rosary Sodality will be on Saturday, October 13th at 9:15am. Everyone is invited to pray the rosary on Wednesday evenings at 6:00pm in the Grotto. Bring a chair and let Our Lady bless you with a mid-week spiritual boost. Pierogi Production at Saint Stanislaus begins Wednesday, Oct 17th and will continue every succeeding Wednesday through Dec 19th. We will need at least one dependable volunteer for prep work on Tuesday mornings beginning at 6:00am. 2 From the Pastor HOLY ANOINTING OF THE SICK Who may receive this sacrament? First of all, any Catholic who is in danger of death, no matter what their status in the eyes of the Church, even those formally excommunicated, at the point of death may be anointed. In fact, it is the one sacrament a priest can give even if he is not perfectly sure the person is a Catholic. The reason, of course, is that Anointing forgives sins, which everyone wants to be free of as we pass through the gates of death to meet our Savior and judge. Then, anyone who is seriously sick (not just a cold or minor flu) or chronically sick (cancer, heart disease) or admitted to the hospital, is a candidate for Holy Anointing. Anyone about to undergo a serious operation (general rather than local anesthesia is a pretty good criterion) may request it. Finally, since old age is a time of so many aches and pains and physical complaints, the elderly may ask for it as well. It is a very great blessing to know that not only prayer, but also one of the seven sacraments, is given us by God to comfort and strengthen us in our illnesses. We need never face our sickness alone. Saint of the Week 9 October Saint Philip Howard Born in 1557, Philip was the 20th Earl of Arundel, and one of Queen Elizabeth s favorite courtiers. While at court, he attended, as entertainment, the torture of a priest, Saint Edmund Campion, who was being forced to defend his Catholic faith against the queen s Protestant theologians. Philip could not forget Edmund s testimony; the priest s words took root in his soul. Meanwhile, Philip s wife Anne, who had stayed true to him through his many affairs, entered the Catholic Church. Philip soon joined her. Anne, for her part, forgave her husband with all her heart. Soon, Queen Elizabeth s purges of Catholics intensified. Philip and Anne tried to flee England, but the queen s ships intercepted them. Philip was taken to the Tower of London. As a nobleman, he was permitted all kinds of comforts, but he chose to fast, pray and do penance for his sins against his wife. Elizabeth would not let Philip see Anne or the son who was born after his imprisonment. Philip grew more and more sickly, and in 1595 he died, having spent six years in the Tower. Not long before, Philip had written to Anne, begging her forgiveness once again and urging total trust in God: I beseech you for the love of God to comfort yourself whatever shall happen, and to be best pleased with whatever shall please God best and be his will to send.
