3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Francis de Sales Parish, Two weeks ago, I wrote about the significance of the Liturgy of the Word in the Mass. In this article, I will continue to highlight some important features of the Liturgy of the Word. The readings at Mass are always proclaimed from the ambo (the proper name for the pulpit). At Mass, the priest is the one who presides, and the proclamation of the Word is not properly a presidential role. The reading should be proclaimed by a lector, and the Gospel should be proclaimed by a deacon. If a deacon is not present, the Gospel is proclaimed by a priest other than the celebrant. In the absence of a deacon or another priest, the celebrant reads the Gospel. The first reading at Sunday Mass is usually from the Old Testament, although there are exceptions. For example, throughout the Easter Season, the first reading is from the Acts of the Apostles. Following the first reading is the responsorial Psalm. The Psalm is sung by a cantor, and the people, as a rule, take part by singing the response. The cantor sings the verses of the Psalm from the ambo, or some other suitable place. The second reading at Sunday Mass is the proclamation of an epistle or letter, most often from Saint Paul. Preceding the proclamation of the Gospel is the Alleluia or another chant proper to the season (the Alleluia is not sung during Lent). This acclamation before the Gospel allows the people to greet the Lord, who speaks through the Gospel, and to profess their faith in chant. The people, led by a cantor or choir, sing the acclamation while standing. The verse is sung by a cantor or choir. In my next article on the Mass, I will address the high point of the Liturgy of the Word, the proclamation of the Gospel. I will also explain the purpose of the homily. God s Blessings, Fr. Que Dios los bendiga, Padre Jim Schuerman JEWELRY AND ACCESSORIES SALES Great gifts for everyone on your holiday list! Everything just $5.99! If you elect to use an automatic deduction from a checking account, the cost to the parish is $0.35 per transaction. If you elect to use a credit card, the fee is $.45 per transaction plus 2.75% for Visa, Master Card or Discover accounts. The charge for an American Express card is 3.5%. Choosing an Online donation method eliminates the cost of envelopes for your family and simplifies parish office procedures for giving records and tax reporting. In the case of using automated, monthly checking deduction the annual cost to St. Francis is totally offset by the savings through elimination of the expense for giving envelopes. For credit cards the envelope savings applies and you gain the benefit of points associated with your credit card program. Please consider joining your fellow parishioners in electing to use our new Online giving option for your regular parish support. The process is secure, simple to set up and totally in your control. Again, thank you for supporting the ministries of our parish. PREGNANCY HELPLINE Our moms chose life because you cared enough to help them when they needed help most. Last year, you picked up a baby bottle and put your loose change, paper money and checks in the bottles. Filling your baby bottle with your gracious donations is one of the many ways the people at the Pregnancy Helpline raise money to support the work they do to help us babies, our mommies, daddies and families. Of course, we babies may not be real objective (see as how they helped save our lives.) Still, I hope you agree with us and pick up a baby bottle or two to put out at your home, maybe your work or anywhere you think people will donate money to help us babies, our moms, our dads and families. The people giving out baby bottles will be here at our church again this year. Please stop and pick up your baby bottle at the Parish Center before or after you attend Mass on Saturday, Nov. 14 and Sunday, Nov. 15. You can drop off your filled baby bottles after Mass on Nov. 28 and 29. On behalf of all the moms, dads and kids, THANK YOU. Pregnancy Helpline of Walworth County OCTOBER IS THE MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY! It could be said that each mystery of the rosary, carefully meditated, sheds light on the mystery of man. Next dates: Wednesdays, Oct. 28 and Nov. 4 at 11:15 a.m. FAITH WITH A FACE St. Francis de Sales parish has been fortunate to have Geri Braun as our RCIA coordinator for many years. An abbreviation for Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, this group meets on a weekly basis where candidates study and convert to the Catholic faith. The reason that people to come to us varies. Sometimes it s because they are marrying a Catholic and want to learn all about it, sometimes they have tried other religions and are searching, and sometimes they were born Catholic but for whatever reason never received the sacraments and want to come back. During these classes they study the Catholic views of the Bible, religious history, each of the sacraments, and the meaning of the liturgy and Eucharist. Geri has been teaching about the Catholic faith most of her life. Graduating from Loyola University at the Master s level with a minor in Religious Studies, she started her career teaching junior high, but shortly thereafter became the Director of Religious Education at St. Joseph s in Harvard, Illinois. At that time, I taught all of the religious programs...from cradle to grave...and so that included everything from teaching baptism classes to RCIA. She also trained catechists for the Rockford diocese. 20 years ago she started teaching RCIA at St. Francis de Sales. The program runs on Tuesday evenings from September until the Easter Vigil, when the candidates receive the sacraments and are welcomed into the Church. We ve had groups as big as 11, and as small as 2 or 3, said Geri. The people coming into the program have a different way of looking at being a Catholic. They study and learn more about it to help them fit their faith into their lives. They don t take it for granted. Geri works tirelessly in this position strictly as a volunteer. Why? The most rewarding part is getting to know the people. They actually help me learn more about MY faith. They think I m teaching them, but in fact...they re teaching me! Geri, thank you for sharing your knowledge and faith with so many people over the years. You are a blessing!
