SHEPHERDS OF CHRIST ASSOCIATES PRAYER GROUP During this Jubilee Year of Divine Mercy we are reminded to pray for our priests. Priests are instruments of God s Mercy and they need our prayers! We pray in church for the priests and the renewal of the Church and the world. Please join us in January.
3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Francis de Sales Parish, Today is the Third Sunday of Advent, traditionally known as Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete comes from a Latin word for Rejoice! We rejoice because the Lord is near. We know that Christ comes into our lives in many ways, through the Word of God proclaimed, through the Sacraments received, through our personal prayer, and through our service to the poor. The Advent season helps us to be more conscious of the coming of the Lord, and to be more prepared to receive him when he makes himself known. During the Advent Season we sing, O Come, Emmanuel. Emmanuel means God with us. In the midst of our struggles and sorrows, it is Christ s love that surrounds us, upholds us and gives us strength. As I have mentioned in previous bulletin articles, Pope Francis has declared the coming year as a Jubilee Year of Mercy (Dec. 8, 2015 through Nov. 20, 2016). St. Francis de Sales Church has been named a pilgrim site in connection with the Year of Mercy. We will be dedicating our Door of Mercy today, Sunday, Dec. 13 at 1:00 p.m. All are invited to our church for this solemn blessing. Rejoice! The Lord is near! God s Blessings, Fr. Que Dios los bendiga, Padre Jim Schuerman PARISH RESTORATION PROJECT Thanks to all who participated in the interviews and surveys with regard to the upcoming parish restoration project. Your opinions will help shape the priorities of the campaign. While no design decisions have yet been made, the plans are starting to take shape because of your input. If you would like to see the results of the feasibility study, there is a link on our website at sfdslg.org. The Parish Restoration Committee will start to meet in January, and the campaign will kick off in early summer KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS The December Knights of Columbus Breakfast will be your last chance to buy your Keep Christ in Christmas signs and decals. Each sign costs only $3.00. We have yard signs, car magnets and interior decals available. Supplies are limited...don t wait! Thank you from K of C s Council #1647 Merry Christmas! YOU ASKED FOR IT Many have asked us for clarification as to the difference between our parish s Human Concerns and Side by Side, Inc. These volunteer groups serve the same demographic, residents of the Badger High School district. Human Concerns meets direct needs of food and clothing at the Lake Geneva Food Pantry and the Clothes Closet at the Methodist Church. Our financial donations to the Food Pantry supplant the food baskets that were brought to homes years ago only now we give year-round. Food and gas vouchers are distributed through the parish office. We provide school supplies in the fall for families in need. Problems affecting parishioners welfare are our concern. Side by Side s main focus is keeping families in their homes by applying funds to their utility bills and rent. Petitioners are interviewed and given references to other areas of assistance. Many volunteers from this parish work in both of these organizations as well as at the Food Pantry and the Clothes Closet. We care. Submitted by the Humans Concerns Committee
4 ANNUAL CHILI COOK -0FF MARK THIS DATE Chili, Chili, Chili...The Annual St Francis De Sales Chili Cook-0ff will be held on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016 starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Social Center. WELCOME We are delighted to have visitors join our regular parishioners and we pray that you will be blessed through your participation in our service. BLESSING OF THE HOLY DOOR Sunday, Dec. 13, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. Pope Francis has announced the Jubilee Year of Mercy beginning with the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Dec. 8, 2015 and concluding with the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, Nov. 20, At St. Peter s Basilica in Rome, a door will be dedicated as the Door of Mercy through which pilgrims may enter to embrace God s mercy and to dedicate themselves to being merciful. Our own St. Francis de Sales Church has been selected by the Archdiocese of Milwaukee as a Holy Door pilgrimage site. On Sunday, Dec. 13, we will be dedicating a Door of Mercy at St. Francis de Sales Church at 1:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend! The church will be available throughout the Year of Mercy for pilgrimages on the following days and times: Mondays 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., and 6:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m.; Tuesdays 7:30 a.m.-7:15 p.m.; Wednesdays 1:00-6:00 p.m.; Thursdays 7:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Pilgrims are encouraged to participate in the regularly scheduled activities that take place during those times (i.e. prayer groups, adoration, Benediction etc.), as well as to use the quiet times for prayer and reflection. The Archdiocese of Milwaukee will provide us with prayer booklets for pilgrims. Learn more about the Patroness of the Americas and the fascinating miracles in the following books: Handbook on Guadalupe - This is the most authoritative, complete and up-to-date book on all the facts, history and devotion of the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe. It includes the latest research and articles on over 35 topics, both scholarly and popular, including the historical roots of Guadalupe, scientific studies of the tilma, miracles and conversions, and much more. Many color photos. The Wonder of Guadalupe - This relatively short book is widely regarded as the best on the apparition of Our Lady in 1531 in Mexico City. Tells the complete story: From the Conquest of Mexico and the conversion of the Aztecs through the development of the devotion and on into the modern era. An enthralling story and an essential devotion for our times! Not Made by Hands - This is the only book of its kind on the two most famous and controversial images in existence-the holy image of Our Lady of Guadalupe on the tilma of Juan Diego, and the sacred image of the crucified Christ on the holy Shroud of Turin. Written by a scientist-religious, it is a good rebuttal of those who would say either of these images is a fraud. SIDE BY SIDE CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS Handmade boxed ornaments will be for sale following the Masses. This year there are handmade stars, angels and doves. These fair trade items were sewn by women in the 3rd World. Thank you for supporting our neighbors needing a hand up this Christmas. Submitted by Side by Side, Inc. 6 ROMAN HOLIDAY Parishioners Ann and Mark Pienkos toured Rome recently. At St. Peter s Basilica their tour guide explained the Jubilee Year of Mercy (Dec. 8, 2015 Nov. 20, 2016) and the Door of Mercy at the Basilica, through which pilgrims may enter to embrace God s mercy and to dedicate themselves to being merciful (as was mentioned in a previous bulletin). The couple was also happy to have connected with our seminarian intern, John Baumgardner. John is looking forward to returning to our parish again next summer. With studying in Rome, you are not able to see family or friends back in the diocese as often. However, one of the blessings is that because folks will come to Rome for pilgrimages or vacation, I ve had the opportunity to spend time with some really great people that I might not have otherwise gotten to meet. This past August, after returning to Rome I was able to meet up with Dr. Mark and Ann Pienkos. I really enjoyed showing the both of them around our seminary which is close to St. Peter s Basilica and then went to dinner afterwards. I was really grateful for their time and generosity, something that so many people at St. Francis de Sales Parish have shown me these last few years. Thanks and God Bless, John Seminarian intern John Baumgardner with Ann and Mark Pienkos in St. Peter s Square. CHRISTMAS MEMORIALS As we end a month of remembering those who have gone before us in faith, another opportunity to remember our loved ones appears. During the seasons of Advent and Christmas, many of us are reminded of those who are no longer with us. If you would like to remember a loved one this Christmas Season, please consider offering a Memorial in their honor. Your donation will go toward the cost of our seasonal church decorations. If you would like to remember your loved ones, please complete the form below and return it to the parish office, along with your donation, no later than Monday, Dec. 22. THANK YOU!! The names of those remembered will be published in a special bulletin in the beginning of January. Yes, I wish to make a Christmas Memorial Donation in memory of: Donation offered by:
