3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Francis de Sales Parish, A couple of weeks ago, I wrote an article explaining the Act of Penitence and the Kyrie Eleison, which form a part of the Introductory Rites of the Mass and help us to enter the sacred mysteries of the Mass with a spirit of humility. I would like to explain another part of the Introductory Rites called the Gloria. The Gloria is a very old and venerable hymn, in which we, the members of the Church, gather together in the Holy Spirit to glorify and entreat God the Father and Christ the Lamb. In the new translation of the Roman Missal, the Gloria begins with the words, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace to people of good will. You will recognize these words in St. Luke s account of the nativity of our Lord as the same words sung by the angels when the good news of Christ s birth was announced to the shepherds. These words glorify the transcendent God who intervenes in our history by giving us his only begotten Son. To understand the significance of the reference to Christ as the Lamb of God, it is helpful to know that in the time of Jesus, the lamb was an animal of sacrifice and a symbol of innocence. The reference to Christ as the Lamb God reminds us that Christ, the Innocent One, died to take away the sins of the world. The text of the Gloria may not be replaced by any other hymn. The Gloria is intoned by the priest, by a cantor, or by the choir, but it is sung by the whole congregation, or the by the congregation singing alternately with the choir, or by the choir alone. If it is not sung, it is to be recited by the congregation. The Gloria is sung or recited every Sunday, except the Sundays during the Advent and Lenten Seasons. It is also sung on solemnities and feasts. This ancient hymn helps us to focus on the power and the compassion of God as we enter into the mysteries of the Mass. God s Blessings, Fr. Jim Schuerman NEW BULLETIN SUBMISSION ADDRESS Please make note of our new bulletin address, bulletin@sfdslg.org. All future articles for the bulletin must be ed to bulletin@sfdslg.org or be submitted in writing to the parish office. A BIG THANK YOU! Your Human Concerns continues its mission of providing essentials to some of the poorest in our community. In August, we donated a large supply of school materials to be given to needy families in the LG area schools. We continue to supply the parish office with vouchers for gas and Walmart supplies. This summer we hosted the director of The Tree House and invited all area churches to learn about our county s problem with child abuse. When the Walworth County Men s Shelter resumes in this fall, we ll be ready to provide meals and fellowship. We hope all bakers will want to whip up something fabulous for our fundraiser which comes at the end of October...the Pie Auction and BBQ Supper. All proceeds will help with our donation to the LG Food Pantry for the holidays. We often sing: The Lord Hears the Cry of the Poor. Thank you for all you do to alleviate those cries. 6 Annual Financial Report and Budget for St. Francis de Sales July 1, June 30, 2015 Summary- Our Annual Report to Parishioners is being presented in the bulletin to share financial information for the year and our budget for The results are presented in summarized tables and graphically in a pie chart format. The results reflect a $32,727 net loss versus $31,583 net income for the prior year. The majority of the year over year change was attributable to a flat level of income and increased payroll and maintenance and repair expense on our aging facility. The year over year operating expense was $76,406 more than the prior year impacted by continued efforts to contain all costs and work towards a balanced operating budget while still providing ministries and maintaining our Parish. Our budgeted total expense for the operating year reflects a decrease to expenses in excess of $40,000 as we strive to provide for the ministries we serve and attract and retain the right people necessary to staff them. As a result we are able to project a balanced budget for the fiscal year. Our heartfelt gratitude to all parishioners for their generous giving, which enables us to maintain and operate our parish in the manner in which we have all grown accustomed. We spent in excess of $75,000 from our restricted funds on school tuitions, building maintenance, and helping area food panty and families in financial need. Our envelope giving was up slightly from last year but has been flat over the last three years. Please consider your weekly giving in light of our work to combat rising costs while maintaining our place of worship and our current goal of $530,000 for the fiscal year. We realize that current economic conditions continue to impact many families in our parish but we ask that you keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we work to keep our parish community vibrant and growing.
