3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Francis de Sales Parish, John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea and saying, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand! (Matthew 3:1-2) The Advent Season is a time to prepare for our encounter with Christ. In today s Gospel, John the Baptist instructed the people to prepare the way through repentance, and they flocked to him to be washed clean from their sins. Advent reminds us that Christ comes into our lives in many ways: through the Word of God proclaimed, through the Sacraments, and through works of justice and charity. To prepare our hearts to meet our Lord, we need to be cleansed of our sins and failings. There are many things at work in our lives which hold us back from deepening our faith: selfishness, indifference, dishonesty, false pride, lust, greed, etc. From time to time, we need to examine our consciences, confess our sins, and experience God s forgiveness. On Sunday, Dec. 11 at 2:00 p.m., there will be an Advent Reconciliation Service with the opportunity for individual confession here at Saint Francis de Sales Church. Please take advantage this opportunity, or consult the bulletin for regularly scheduled opportunities for confession. Prepare the way of the Lord! God s Blessings, Fr. 6 PROJECT 2017 RENOVATION TEAM Your Project 2017 Renovation Team has been working together since January, Meeting once or twice a month as a group, (and sometimes more for specific meetings with contractors, getting bids, and researching options) a lot has been accomplished! This group has worked so well together as there are many talented individuals who all bring something to the table. Methodically working through the various aspects of the renovation, we have split into subgroups, each specializing in different facets of the project. As we get ready to close the church to start the actual construction process right after Christmas, we are working hard on coordinating all of the various contractors and subs to ensure that we complete the project by Holy Week, 2017! If at any time you have questions or want to get involved, please feel free to reach out to any one of us. Pictured (top row left to right): Matt Huml, Daryl Braun, Katie Alder, Phil Hall, Fr. We could use some extra people to help organize the sacristy to prepare it for painting/new carpeting, move things to parish center to get it set up for Mass, and more! If you have some extra time, please contact Martha Cucco at stewardship@sfdslg.org GENEROUS HEARTS Our appeal is still going strong and we re hoping that all our parishioners respond with their prayers and new gift of treasure. We simply ask that continue your commitment going forward. The program is 7 weeks, but your new gift will allow us to target our parish initiatives, such as to continue to enhanced existing ministries and develop new ones for youth and adults that promote everyday stewardship. We will keep you well informed on our progress over the next several months.. To pledge, please visit GenerousHearts.WeConnect.com or text Generous to Thank you for your generosity. PRAYER TO ASK GOD TO FOSTER APPRECIATION FOR THE SANCTITY OF LIFE God, you created us in your image to love you and your children. When we sinned, you sent your Son to save us. Please instill in us an appreciation for the sanctity of all life from natural conception to natural death. Enlighten us to work for justice for the poor. Motivate us to feed the hungry. Inspire us to protect the threatened life of the unborn. Strengthen us to bring comfort to the infirm. Teach us to treat the aging with dignity and respect. Holy Spirit, comfort those who regret their abortion, counsel those who are considering ending the life of their unborn baby and convert the abortionist. Bring us to the joy of your everlasting life through Christ Our Lord. Amen
7 THE FINAL RESULTS ARE IN FOR THE MILLION HOURS OF VOLUNTEERING CHALLENGE! Wow, it is unbelievable how generous our parishioners are with their volunteering. Some give an hour here or 1/2 hour there and some give hundreds of hours but what matters is that we give whatever we can. We volunteer wherever there is a need. We take care of the Altar, take Communion to the home bound, work on the renovation, watch children so someone can see a doctor, give eye screening tests, fund raising for missions, sing in our choirs, volunteer at libraries and museums, coach teams, count church collections, Bible Study, bingo at a nursing home, jail ministry, hospital volunteering, fun fair and the list goes on and on. If you have ever asked yourself, Is there something I can do? Look at the list, none of these require special training. What they require is YOU. If all of the volunteers in the world quit for one day, can you imagine the impact that it would have. As I was totaling up the hours for the final count, there was a surprise visitor from our cluster parish, St. Catherine s in Sharon. The Hispanic community from this small church handed me a list of thousands of hours that they had volunteered over this past year. This was just what we needed along with some other last minute submissions to top off our wine chalice to bring our total to 500,000 hours! This is an amazing number of hours full of spirit and generosity. We have a lot to be proud of here at St. Francis. The school and the church together with open hearts have provided children and adults, who are willing to give and make our parish as Father said in last Sunday s Bulletin, the special place that it is! 8 FAITH WITH A FACE LISA PARKER Although Lisa has lived in a few different places, two things have been a constant: She has always cared for others and has always been very active in her parish. Moving to Lake Geneva 15 years ago from Fresno, California, she has been a Eucharistic Minister (both at SFDS and at Aurora Lakeland Medical Center) for 12 years. She has also trained new Eucharistic Ministers, been a greeter, and has been an SFDS wedding coordinator for six years. Currently she is a member of the Chorale, the Arimatheans, a founding member of the wonderful Wednesday Bible Study, a Eucharistic Minister, and an RCIA Coordinator! Lisa lived in California for about 5 years. While there she worked as an LPN in a chemical dependency unit at Cedar Vista hospital. She also taught 9th and 10th grade students at the San Joaquin Memorial Catholic High School. During this time period she did volunteer work in the Pastoral Care Department at St. Agnes Medical Center as a Eucharistic Minister. Before moving to California to be near her ailing parents, she worked for 3 years as a LPN at a local clinic with fellow parishioners, Dr. Alabarca and Mary Koehler. But nursing was not her first career... Before going to school for nursing, she lived in Williams Bay and was a Director of Youth Ministry and Director of Religious Education at St. Andrew s Parish in Delavan for 10 years. She designed and directed their Confirmation retreats, beginning there as a volunteer catechist. After 7 years of study at Cardinal Stritch and Alverno, she earned a Multilevel Certificate in Youth Ministry and Religious Studies. As a parishioner of St. Andrew s, she volunteered as a catechist, led the Youth Choir for 8 years and was a member of the Archdiocesan RENEW Core Team. If that wasn t enough, she was also the Parish Festival Chairperson! At another point in her life she lived in Twin Lakes for 5 years, was a member of St. John s and founded a large ecumenical bible study that met at St. John s called The Lost and Found Department. Lisa is the proud mother of five grown children and has twelve grandchildren that fill her life with joy. She is professionally retired, but not retired from life. What are her hobbies? Reading good books, writing children s poetry and other poetry. I actually had one poem published. I love music, scripture, people, dogs, babies and travel. A few years back I bought a small motor home and drove 7,000 miles by myself. It was awesome! What does Lisa love about SFDS? Our vibrant faith community. We really do live our mission statement! Any of us who work with Lisa in any of these ministries are well aware of her high energy and love for what she does. What drives her? I have always felt called to bring the Good News. I am most alive when I share my faith... It hasn't impacted my life, it IS my life! Thank you, Lisa, for all that you have done and continue to do for others. We are lucky that God has sent you to St. Francis de Sales parish to share your many gifts! Did you know your child could attend Catholic Central High School tuition free? What is the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program (WPCP) you ask? The WPCP allows families to receive a voucher from the state of Wisconsin to enroll their children in a private, or religious school tuition free. What Wisconsin families are eligible to apply for a voucher? Residents of the state of Wisconsin, outside of the Milwaukee and Racine Unified school districts, with a family income at or below 185% of the federal poverty level are eligible to receive a voucher to attend a private or religious school through the WPCP. CATHOLIC FUNERALS - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS From the Sacramental Guidelines of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee (Continued from last week ) Other Questions 32. May persons pre-plan their funerals? Yes. It is important that people plan their funeral and make clear their wishes ahead of time. In this way, they can be sure that the funeral rites will reflect their Catholic faith. Such planning, is also the best way to avoid heavier financial burdens later. Additionally, it is wise to share with relatives one s desires for the funeral. It follows that the family or those charged with arranging a funeral ought to respect the wishes of the deceased regarding their funeral rites. 33. May a person donate organs? The donation of one s organs has become commonplace and is commendable. The donation of the entire body for scientific study is also permitted. In these instances, the proper disposition of the body is to be done according to accepted practices. 34. How can the funeral of a loved one affect faith? The Christian faith in life after death becomes more real for us when a loved one dies. We continue to pray for the deceased as we did for them during life on earth. Planning and participating in the funeral rites can deepen our own faith and hope in the life to come. The prayers and scripture readings we choose speak to life everlasting, where we shall see one another again. 35. Can bequests be made for Mass intentions so a parish will benefit? Because of their commitment to a beloved parish, may people choose to name the parish in their last will and testament. They also wish to remain connected to the faith community by being remembered in prayer. Too frequently, however, the wording in their wills defeats their good intentions. When a bequest is made to a parish for the offering of Masses (For example, I bequeath to St. Francis de Sales Parish $5,000 for Masses to be said for my intentions. ), the entire amount must be set aside for Mass offerings (totaling 500 Masses). None of the bequest may go toward support of the parish and its programs or ministry because Mass offerings are given to the priest who celebrates the Mass, not to the parish. 36. How should bequests to parishes be made? If donors want the parish to benefit from their generosity, they should word their wills so that the bequest is clearly directed to the parish itself. They may also request that their intention be remembered in Masses, but such a request must be separate from the amount of their bequest to the parish. 37. What about Mass intentions for the deceased? Praying for the deceased is an important act of faith and connects us to those who have preceded us in death. We may wish to request a Mass be offered for a loved one s intention, or we may wish to specify a small amount in our will for a Mass to be offered for our own intention. It is an important to remember, however, that every Sunday and holy day, the pastor offers the Mass for the People for the intentions of living and deceased members of the parish. Thus, even in death, parishioners are remembered at these Masses. For further information, contact: Archdiocese of Milwaukee
10 KID POWER SFDS is fortunate to have kids from both our grade school and our religious ed program as part of our wonderful volunteer force. Kids and teens participate as altar servers, readers, greeters, Choir of Angels choir members, Christmas Choir members, Contemporary Choir members, cantors, and more. They help those in our community by conducting food drives, baby item drives, and bringing cheer to nursing homes. They help with parish and school fundraisers and events such as the KC breakfast, the Advent Breakfast, Irishfest, the Chili cookoff, the Fall Festival and more. They participate by volunteering to clean the church, change over the hymnals seasonally, stuff and collate mailings, and come with their families to help decorate the church for Christmas and Easter. Several high school students traveled last summer on a mission trip to build housing for the poor in Harlan, Kentucky. They have very busy schedules with sports and academics but manage to find the time to earn community service hours...sometimes having to get up very early on a Sunday morning! Their compassion and enthusiasm is inspiring! If you happen to see one of our kids helping out, please let them know how much they are appreciated. They are the future of our parish!
