The Advent and Christmas Seasons are very special times at St. Francis de Sales. Christmas Eve is especially exciting when we walk into church and see the sparkling lights on all the trees, the Christmas flowers, and the creche waiting for the baby Jesus to be placed between Mary and Joseph. Christmas this year falls on a Monday so something is happening that only occurs one time every seven years. The Fourth Sunday of Advent takes place on Christmas Eve! Because of this unusual timing, there will be only two Masses on the morning of Dec. 24. Those Masses will be at7:30 and 9:00 a.m. (no 10:30 a.m. Mass) The times for Christmas Eve Masses are changing slightly this year. Father Mark would like to celebrate the Children s Mass at both St. Francis and St. Benedict so we have each altered our schedules so that can happen. The Children s Mass will be at 3: 00 p.m. with music by the Children s Choir. There will then be a 4:30 p.m. Mass in the church. The later Mass will be at 10:00 p.m. with music by the Adult Choir beginning at 9:40 p.m.. We will be putting out reminders in the coming weeks about these time changes. 5 CHRISTMAS MEMORIAL SERVICE The Holidays are a time for remembering and we understand that this could be a difficult time for a lot of families. On Dec. 3, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. the Derrick Funeral Home of Lake Geneva is hosting their annual Christmas Memorial Service. This is the 21 st year that the Derrick Funeral Home has put on this Christmas Memorial Service and, as years in the past, we invite everyone to attend. FIESTA DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE GUADALUPE VIGILIA/ FEAST OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE VIGIL Vigil begins Monday, Dec. 11, at 6:00 p.m. and continues through the night, ending with Las Mananitas at 5:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, Dec. 12. Then at 5:30 p.m. the evening of Dec. 12 there will be a remembrance/ re-enactment of the Dia de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe followed by Spanish Mass at 6:00 p.m. and hospitality immediately following mass. Amen SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Friday, Dec. 8, is the day we celebrate the Immaculate Conception of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. The day marks our belief that God preserved Mary from any inclination to sin, the inheritance of original sin passed on to all mankind from Adam and Eve. It is the patronal feast day of the United States and is a Holy Day of Obligation. Mass will be held at St. Francis de Sales that day at 7 a.m., 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. PRAYER LIST UPDATE We are updating the prayer list of those who are sick. 6 Project 2017 News, Upcoming Events & Project Updates ALONG THE SAME VEIN Nothing was more controversial in the renovation than the black marble. People either loved it or hated it. These strong opinions were expressed regularly, some even writing letters to the pastor. The history of the black marble is that it was installed in 1959 during the last major renovation of the church. The type of marble is called PORTORO and is mined in Italy. It s very high quality and was quite the fashion at the time of its installation. The black background with gold veins created an elegant backdrop. On the flip side, it gave the sanctuary a dark and cold feeling. One of our goals was to bring in more light, but we also wanted to respect the history of the church. We contacted Rich Murray Granite and Marble Works (located in central Illinois) and Rich was incredibly knowledgeable. He thought that the marble could come down so that it could be re-used (we weren't sure how it was attached to the walls). He advised us that the marble could be fabricated to our specifications. In addition, he could keep the extra marble on consignment and sell it for our parish. After many discussions, we decided that it would be important to keep some of the marble throughout the church for both aesthetic and historical reasons. Rich carefully cut and milled pieces to our contractors specifications. You will find the black marble has been re-used in several locations: The baptismal font, the Welcome Center, the Our Lady of Guadalupe shrine, and the side and back altars in the sanctuary (the back altar and the steps are the original with the back altar getting a new wood surround). The black steps leading up from the church to the sanctuary are actually black tile that was chosen to coordinate with the Portoro Marble. The results exceeded our expectations! The marble is especially beautiful close up and works really well as an accent. Many parishioners have ordered pieces and have had tabletops, counters, trivets, and coasters made as keepsakes. We have received some income from the sales and still have more on consignment. While the Portoro marble wasn t part of the original church (built in 1892), it has been around for almost 60 years. Re-purposing the marble was a great opportunity to honor that and to incorporate it into our new design. We hope you agree!
