3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Francis de Sales Parish, Happy New Year! As we continue our celebrations in this Christmas Season, I would like to take a moment to thank you for your cards, gifts, and most of all for your prayers. What is the best gift you received this Christmas? I would bet that many of you would answer not by naming some material thing, but rather by something relational. Maybe you received a surprise visit by a loved one, experienced reconciliation with someone with whom you ve been on the outs, received a Christmas card or a phone call from someone who offered you words of encouragement and hope, or just enjoyed some quality time with family and friends. Christmas gifts are wonderful, but they can t compare with good experiences with other people. Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany, recalling that God in his infinite wisdom deigned that there was no substitute for his presence among us. Throughout the ages he communicated to humanity through the law and the prophets, but the people remained in darkness, rejecting the prophets and turning away from the law. God saw that his people needed more. They needed his presence among them. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. (Juan 1:14a) That is the great mystery of the Christmas season. God became human, and experienced human joy and suffering, acceptance and rejection, life and death. Our God understands fully our human condition. He became one like us. On Epiphany, we recall that the Magi made their way to Bethlehem to worship the Son of God. They presented Jesus with gifts as signs of their love and devotion. During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, may we strive to seek Christ as he manifests himself in the poor, the sick, the imprisoned and the oppressed, bearing our gifts of mercy, compassion, consolation and love. God s Blessings, Fr. Que Dios los bendiga, Padre Jim Schuerman THANK YOU Dear Human Concerns Committee of SFDS, WOW! Thank you so much for your generous donation to the Lake Geneva Food Pantry. With your help we were able to help 247 families in our community to put food on their table in November. That number is made up of 455 adults and 229 children, real faces, real people right here by us who need your help in feeding their families. Thank you so much for your partnership in making this happen! We appreciate your generosity. Merry Christmas to all of you. Sincerely, Staff of Lake Geneva Food Pantry
4 T HE POPE S PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR JANUARY 2016 Interreligious Dialogue That sincere dialogue among men and women of different faiths may produce the fruits of peace and justice. Christian Unity That by means of dialogue and fraternal charity and with the grace of the Holy Spirit, Christians may overcome divisions. BULLETIN SUBMISSIONS All articles for the bulletin must be ed to bulletin@sfdslg.org or submitted in writing to the parish office. The deadline is at noon on Monday. SHELTER THE HOMELESS: JANUARY 2016 Pope Francis has declared a Jubilee Year of Mercy to begin on Dec. 8, 2015 and continue through Nov. 20, Catholics throughout the archdiocese are invited to practice the Works of Mercy throughout the jubilee year. For January, we focus on the Work of Mercy: Shelter the Homeless. Take this Mercy Action: Donate to an agency serving the homeless, volunteer at a shelter and practice generous hospitality by inviting guests to your home. To explore all of the Year of Mercy resources in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, please visit NEW OUTDOOR MANGER When the Engerman family heard that our SFDS outdoor nativity was homeless, they volunteered to build a manger without hesitation. The very next day, John and Johnny were measuring, and the day after that the plans were drawn. By the end of the week it was delivered and assembled, with Madeleine cutting down reeds from her garden to make the roof, setting up the lighting, and adding other touches. It comes apart into 5 sections so that it can be easily stored. The wood, also donated by the Engermans, is salvaged and repurposed. The hardest part, said John (a custom home builder) was to make it look authentically imperfect! Situated on Highway 50, it will be a beautiful reminder of the reason for the season for our parishioners, as well as for the visitors and residents of our community. We are so grateful for this project, said Madeleine. It s really helped our family get into the Christmas spirit! Thank you, Engerman fam, for sharing your time and talents and spreading the true meaning of Christmas! Thank you also to Jim Gottinger and our head custodian, Mike Johnson, for helping with the set up!

CHURCH RESTORATION PROJECT--SOUND SYSTEM INSTALLATION You might have noticed some workmen in the church recently. They were busy installing our new church sound system! As you may have heard, the old system was performing sporadically and there were times that there was no sound at all coming through in the chapel area. It had not been updated for a long time, and planned as part of our upcoming church restoration project, Fr. Jim decided to have it installed sooner than later. Michael Deane, SFDS s Director of Liturgy and Music, worked with ProAudio to oversee the installation of new speakers and a new sound board with the latest technology. The feedback from people in the pews is that the sound is much clearer! The speaker installation created the need to move the music space and cantor stand. While these changes are temporary, we are working on a full time solution in coordination with the church remodeling project in The funds for this project came out of the Faith in Our Future campaign, and cost just under $60,000. This project was considered high priority for the quality of our liturgies. We feel blessed to have had it installed in time for our Christmas season! Thanks to all who made this possible! FAITH WITH A FACE In 1990, Nancy Lazzaroni had not given any thought to joining the choir until Fr. Dave Braun convinced her to try it. When she walked into the practice, there was Vince singing away. It took Vince almost one year to ask Nancy out after a little nudging from the choir leader. They were married in Vince and Nancy have two children: Sophie is a sophomore at University of Minnesota and Dominic is a senior at Badger High School. Nancy teaches math at Badger High School. Vince oversees a lab operation. Both Nancy and Vince are in the Contemporary Choir which sings at 9:00 Mass. Nancy is active with the Women s Emmaus Retreats and president of the Altar Society. She has helped with children s religious education and confirmation classes. Vince is a cantor during the masses. He was a volunteer parent for school activities. They both went on field trips and did many other things with the children, especially when their children were going to St. Francis. They are active with other volunteer opportunities in the community such as scouts. Nancy and Vince come every week because they want to contribute to the parish by sharing the talents they have. They feel a sense of belonging to their church family. They look forward to seeing the same people at Mass each week. This has been a constant through the different stages of their personal and parish life over the past decades. The most rewarding experiences they have had have been singing with other choirs for the Jubilee Mass, confirmation at St. Benedict s, singing Vespers at the cathedral, talking to Bishop Sklba before masses and meeting Cardinal Dolan when he became Archbishop of the Milwaukee Diocese. Thank you Nancy and Vince for being such an important part of the St. Francis de Sales music ministry, and for all that you continue to do for our parish!
