4 4 Appunti del Parroco: a Message from the Pastor O ver the last four years, I have dedicated the majority of my columns to walking through the topics and teachings of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. With today s column, we have reached the end of the first and largest section of the Catechism, The Profession of Faith (the Creed). We are now more than one third of the way through the entire Catechism and have reached our first amen. Amen is a tricky word because it functions in such a powerful and intense manner. It acts as a complete affirmation of something as conforming to the truth. Often translated as, so be it, it can also be translated as: truth, true one, truly, verily, I believe, and other such affirmations of the veracity of something that has been said or is to be said. In Hebrew, amen comes from the same root as the word believe. This root expresses solidity, trustworthiness, faithfulness. And so we can understand why Amen may express both God s faithfulness towards us and our trust in him (CCC, No. 1062). Christ uses amen in the Book of Revelation to refer to Himself, and in the Gospels as an affirmation W ith joyful hearts, we welcome to our archdiocese the Most Rev. Charles C. Thompson, who was installed this past Friday as the seventh archbishop of Indianapolis. He is the 13th shepherd of the Diocese of Vincennes/Archdiocese of Indianapolis. The oldest of three children, he was born April 11, 1961, in Louisville, Ky. He holds a bachelor of arts degree in accounting from Bellarmine College, a master of divinity degree from St. Meinrad School of Theology, and a licentiate in Canon Law from St. Paul University in Ottawa. He was ordained a priest for the Louisville Archdiocese in 1987 and was ordained and installed as Bishop of Evansville on June 29, Pope Francis appointed him archbishop of Indianapolis on June 13. As a member of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Reaching our first Amen of the words He is about to speak: Amen. Amen. I say to you. The very last word in the Bible is Amen. And so we can understand why, when we profess our faith in the Creed, we follow in our Savior s footsteps. We begin with Credo/I Believe and complete the Creed with Amen. Thus the Creed s final Amen repeats and confirms its first words: I believe. To believe is to say Amen to God s words, promises and commandments; to entrust oneself completely to him who is the Amen of infinite love and perfect faithfulness (CCC, No. 1064). So, as we end this section of the Catechism on the Creed and begin the next section on the Sacraments, it is fitting that we say Amen to the things we believe and Amen to the means by which God will strengthen our belief. Please join us in prayer for the new shepherd of our archdiocese O PRAYER FOR ARCHBISHOP THOMPSON God, Eternal Shepherd of the faithful, who tend Your Church in countless ways and rule over her in love: grant, we pray, that your servant Archbishop Charles Thompson, whom You have set over Your people, may preside in the place of Christ over the flock whose shepherd he is, and be faithful as a teacher of doctrine, a priest of sacred worship and as one who serves them by governing. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Bishops, Archbishop Thompson is currently a member of the Administrative Committee, the Committee on Priorities and Plans, and the Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations. Please keep Archbishop Thompson in your prayers, that he may be a faithful, courageous shepherd for the 223,815 Catholics in Central and Southern Indiana.
5 5 Echo of God s love transforms common dirt into glorious light E verything seems an echo of something else. So says Robert Penn Warren in his poem, A Way to Love God. Even so, brilliancy and freshly turned dirt don t seem to have much of a common echo especially if you re the one turning the dirt under a hot summer s sun. But the brilliancy is revealed in the dirt through our being born again and maturing into God s truth: it is revealed through conversion. The echo is, for most of us, in reverse; instead of the fullness of being realized at the onset, the full potency and chorus build grace by grace. Some things are immediately brilliant, but they are also often painful in their suddenness a bright light, a thunder clap, a guarded secret revealed, Christ s Crucifixion and His Resurrection. But most times brilliancy dawns upon us gradually, like a crescendo washing over us note by note until we are wrapped in awe at its simple totality. Surrendering one s self to God is that kind of a thing: bit by bit, note by note, grace by grace. We decide, in the mystery of God s will, to follow Him; and from that singularity our lives are forever changing, because the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the glorious liberty of the children of God (Rom 8:20). We crescendo towards this glorious liberty... the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved (ibid.). While we decrease, the echo of God s love revealed in Creation, Incarnation and Cross increases and it transforms us from being children of this world (common dirt) into the Chil- The Vicar s Corner By the Rev. Luke Reese Parochial Vicar, Holy Rosary Church contact: luke@holyrosaryindy.org on the web: dren of God (glorious brilliancy). Moses and the Hebrews were greeted at Mount Horeb (Mount Sinai, the Mountain of the Law) by the blast of a trumpet, And as the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him in thunder (Ex 19:19). The echo of that trumpet was caught up into the echo of all that had transpired before it in God s economy of redemption His love-song for His Creation and is part of the harmony of whole. Towards the end of his poem, Warren predicts, You would think that nothing would ever again happen, in relation to the all-encompassing echo of universal simplicity to which he earlier alluded. He would have said it this way, there is nothing new under the sun, but the Preacher in Ecclesiastes (1:9) had already said it. The Preacher began by declaring, Vanity of vanities, all is vanity! (1:1); then, thousands of words latter, he concludes, Fear God, and keep His commandments; for this is the whole duty of man (12:13). And that, we can echo with Warren, That may be a way to love God. If they come to die in that state, they will be lost for all eternity. What a pity! We have to pray for sinners! Praying for sinners is the most beautiful and useful of prayers because the just are on the way to heaven, the souls of purgatory are sure to enter there, but the poor sinners will be lost forever. All devotions are good but there is no better one than such prayer for sinners.
