3 Announcements We will take up a second collection today for the Santo Rosario Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. We will take up a second collection next weekend for victims of Hurricane Florence and any other disasters that occur this year. First Friday and First Saturday are this week. Our customary overnight Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament begins after the 5:45 p.m. Mass on Friday and ends at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. A signup sheet is on the lectern near the back pews. Congratulations to John Lawhorn, who was baptized and received into the Church on Friday. Respect Life Sunday is Oct. 7. Participants in the annual Life Chain will be praying along Meridian Street from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Due to construction, our parish s position along the route has changed; we will be on the west side of Meridian Street between Walnut and St. Clair streets, across from the American Legion Mall and near the public library. Holy Rosary had the largest parishioner turnout last year! Life Chain T-shirts are available for $8 each; contact Paula Stahl at paulas2944@yahoo.com. October is the Month of the Holy Rosary. The Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary encourages the public recitation of the rosary at every daily Mass for the sanctification of the Church and world peace. We have immediate Mass intention openings for weekday Masses in both the Ordinary and Extraordinary forms. Updated parish photo directories are available only for those who have had their portraits taken here in the last two years. 4 4 Appunti del Parroco: a Message from the Pastor T he Holy Mass (in the Eastern Churches, the Divine Liturgy) accomplishes three things every time it is celebrated: thanksgiving and praise to the Father; the sacrificial memorial of Christ and his Body; the presence of Christ by the power of His Word and of His Spirit (Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 1358). Christ in His life, Passion, Death and Resurrection healed the wounds of Original Sin and restored proper worship to God the Father. Before the Fall of Man, all of Creation was returned to God in a great act of thanksgiving that was the life of our first parents. Upon committing original sin, they turned in selfishness away from God. Whereas before the Fall they had understood the whole of Creation as a gift to themselves and had freely offered themselves back to God in a loving relationship, they now turned to be like gods and freed themselves from loving Him. In the Eucharistic sacrifice the whole of creation loved by God is presented to the Father through the death and the Resurrection of Christ (CCC, No. 1359). Christ restores the loving relationship between God and Man and once again returns the goodness of creation back to God in His worship of the Father. In leaving us the Mass, the Holy Eucharist, Christ allows us to participate in this now-restored relationship. The Eucharist is a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Father, a blessing by which the Church expresses her gratitude to God for all His benefits, for all that He has accomplished through creation, redemption, and sanctification (CCC, No. 1360). The Holy Mass is a sacrifice because it is the memorial of Christ s Passover, remembered not by mere men but by Christ Himself acting in and through the Church and specifically the Church s minister, the priest. It is then Christ who recalls and in so doing makes truly present His Passion, Death and Resurrection. He re-presents the saving mystery of Calvary. The sacrificial character of the Eucharist is manifested in the very words of institution: The Sacramental Sacrifice This is my body which is given for you and This cup which is poured out for you is the New Covenant in my blood. In the Eucharist Christ gives us the very body which he gave up for us on the cross, the very blood which he poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins (CCC, No. 1365). And so, this re-presentation is the very same offering of Himself that occurred on the Cross. Thus, He does indeed offer Himself once and for all but makes that offering present many times over in an unbloody manner by grace. The Eucharist is thus a sacrifice because it represents (makes present) the sacrifice of the cross, because it is its memorial and because it applies its fruit: [Christ], our Lord and God, was once and for all to offer himself to God the Father by his death on the altar of the cross, to accomplish there an everlasting redemption. But because his priesthood was not to end with his death, at the Last Supper on the night when he was betrayed, [he wanted] to leave to his beloved spouse the Church a visible sacrifice (as the nature of man demands) by which the bloody sacrifice which he was to accomplish once for all on the cross would be re-presented, its memory perpetuated until the end of the world, and its salutary power be applied to the forgiveness of the sins we daily commit (CCC, No. 1366, quoting the Council of Trent, 1562). When we as Christians, incorporated into the Body of Christ by our baptisms, participate as members of the Body of Christ, the Church, and as His adopted brothers and sisters by grace, the sacrifice of Christ the Head becomes our sacrifice as well. Everything we are and do can be united with Christ in the Mass. Through the ministry of priests the spiritual sacrifice of the faithful is completed in union with the sacrifice of Christ the only Mediator, which in the Eucharist is offered through the priests hands in the name of the whole Church in an unbloody and sacramental manner until the Lord himself comes (CCC, No. 1369). Through the Mass the entire Church Glorified, Suffering and Militant is united in the one eternal act of Christ s Love. In and through the Mass we can
5 experience, although often not sense, the presence of the Communion of the Saints. United through Christ we can experience their love for us and they can experience and know our love for them. The mode of Christ s presence under the Eucharistic species is unique. It raises the Eucharist above all the sacraments as the perfection of the spiritual life and the end to which all the sacraments tend (CCC, No. 1374). When Christ makes Himself present to us in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, He does so through the transformation, commonly referred to as transubstantiation, of the bread and wine offered by His people into Himself: Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. This real presence of the Lord is the means by which Christ continues to make Himself substantially present wholly and entirely to each individual and to the Church and World. It is this work of Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit that we know as the Most Blessed Sacrament. The Council of Trent summarizes the Catholic faith by declaring: Because Christ our Redeemer said that it was truly his body that he was offering under the species of bread, it has always been the conviction of the Church of God, and this holy Council now declares again, that by the consecration of the bread and wine there takes place a change of the whole substance of the bread into the substance of the body of Christ our Lord and of the whole substance of the wine into the substance of his blood. This change the holy Catholic Church has fittingly and properly called transubstantiation (CCC, No. 1376). Because Christ is truly present in every part and as long as the Eucharistic species persists, we worship the Most Blessed Sacrament as Christ the Lord with the same adoration and devotion. This worship occurs during Mass and through Holy Communion but persists after Mass to the divine presence in the Holy Tabernacle. As the Catechism reminds us: The Church and the world have a great need for Eucharistic worship. Jesus awaits us in this sacrament of love. Let us not refuse the time to go to meet him in adoration, in contemplation full of faith, and open to making amends for the serious offenses and crimes of the world. Let our adoration never cease (CCC, No. 1379, quoting Pope St. John Paul II, Dominicæ Cenæ). 5 Pray for the Church & our country Sunday,October 4 p.m. Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary Holy Rosary Church is serving as local host of the Rosary Coast to Coast initiative.
