4 4 Appunti del Parroco: a Message from the Pastor Embracing the Resurrection of Jesus Christ E aster is the high point of the year for us as Christians. We celebrate that Christ is indeed arisen. The old, traditional greeting for Easter among Christians was an affirmation of this holy Mystery, Christ is Risen. The response is, Indeed, He is Risen. Christians greet each other with the joyful news of our living God and Savior s Resurrection. After having left it behind for the 40 days of Lent, we, during this great Easter Season, bring back the ancient word of praise, ALLELUIA. This Hebrew word meaning, all praise He Who Is, is almost never translated because we, and Christians of all ages, can feel in it the very sense of prayer and rejoicing that it brings. May we all find great Hope during this Easter Season in the knowledge that our God and Savior is alive and that He has made eternal life a real possi- bility for us. Let us turn to God in love and thanksgiving as we sing in our hearts and lives the eternal ALLELUIA. For each of us, it should be a time in which we personally embrace the Resurrection. Whether it be from past sins, neglect or just a general apathy in regards to things spiritual, we should reflect during this Easter Season on ways in which we can open up our lives more fully to the Good News. Whether we have been slumbering in a nightmare of sin or dragged down into a general malaise of indifference, we should awaken with the confidence that Christ has Arisen and that all things are possible with Him. On Easter morning, first the women and then the disciples had the grace of seeing the Lord. From that moment on, they knew that the first day of the week, Sunday, would be His day, the day of Christ the Lord. The day when creation began became the day when creation was renewed. Creation and redemption belong together. That is why Sunday is so important. It is good that today, in many cultures, Sunday is a free day, and is often combined with Saturday so as to constitute a weekend of free time. Yet this free time is empty if God is not present. Dear friends! Sometimes, our initial impression is that having to include time for Mass on Sunday is rather inconvenient. But if you make the effort, you will realize that this is what gives proper focus to your free time. Do not be deterred from taking part in Sunday Mass, and help others to discover it, too. This is because the Eucharist releases the joy that we need so much, and we must learn to grasp it ever more deeply, we must learn to love it. Let us pledge ourselves to do this it is worth the effort! Let us discover the intimate riches of the Church s liturgy and its true greatness: it is not we who are celebrating for ourselves, but it is the living God himself who is preparing a banquet for us.
6 6 The Most Reverend Charles C. Thompson Archbishop of Indianapolis 1400 N. Meridian Street Indianapolis, IN Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As an Archdiocese, on April 8 we will be taking a collection for the Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa. The Church in Africa is growing rapidly, but too often there are not enough local pastoral resources to support people in their faith. When you contribute to this collection, you are helping people across the African continent grow closer to Christ and to the Church. For example, in Malawi, young people comprise nearly two-thirds of the population. And the Church there reflects this youthful face as well-the majority of the faithful are young people! But unfortunately, the Church in Malawi does not have enough staff or ministers to reach these young Catholics and help them grow in their faith. Without support, young people run the risk of falling away from the Church. However, with your generosity to the Solidarity Fund, the Church in Malawi can train youth leaders to connect with and guide young people across the country. Nearly 800 young people will be reached because of your contributions. With your help, the Catholic youth of Malawi will become a powerful force for good and new messengers of the Gospel. The Church in Africa needs your help to ensure that all the faithful have access to resources to help them grow in our shared faith. Please be generous to this collection in your parishes. With assurance of my prayers and best wishes, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Charles C. Thompson Archbishop of Indianapolis T Do not be afraid! Open your hearts to the risen Christ! Here is an excerpt from the Regina Caeli address delivered in Rome by Pope St. John Paul II on March 31, oday is Easter Monday, traditionally called Monday of the Angel, because angels appeared beside the women and the Apostles with a significant role in the extraordinary event of the Resurrection. It was precisely an angel who addressed the first message from the empty tomb to the women who had come to finish the burial arrangements for Jesus body. He says to them: Do not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen, He is not here (Mk 16:6). Today s feast therefore prolongs the intense joy of Easter. The liturgy says over and over: This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad! The Easter proclamation which the divine messenger addressed to the women is repeated to each of us by our guardian angel: Do not be afraid! Open your hearts to the risen Christ! By putting his angel beside us, the Lord intends to accompany every moment of our lives with his love and protection, so that we can fight the good fight of faith, and give fearless and unhesitating testimony of our loyalty to the One who died and rose for our redemption.
7 Easter Brunch & Egg Hunt Saturday, APRIL 7 Brunch: 11:45 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. in Priori Hall Parish will provide utensils, drinks and sweets. All parishioners are invited to attend and pitch in; please bring a savory dish (egg casserole, etc.) to share. Egg Hunt will begin at 12:45 p.m. in the park Holy Rosary Parish Sponsored by our High School Youth Group The Italian Street Festival Committee cordially invites all Holy Rosary parishioners to a FREE CATERED DINNER 6 P.M. THURSDAY 12 APRIL Bring your families to enjoy an evening of Indian food, beverages (adult & otherwise) and the company of our fellow parishioners. EVERYTHING IS ON US! RSVP to indyitalianfest@gmail.com (PLEASE COME EVEN IF YOU FORGET TO RSVP) Y esterday I was crucified with Him; today I am glorified with Him; yesterday I died with Him; today I am quickened with Him; yesterday I was buried with Him; today I rise with Him. But let us offer to Him Who suffered and rose again for us you will think perhaps that I am going to say gold, or silver, or woven work or transparent and costly stones, the mere passing material of earth, that remains here below, and is for the most part always possessed by bad men, slaves of the world and of the Prince of the world. Let us offer ourselves, the possession most precious to God, and most fitting; let us give back to the Image what is made after the Image. Let us recognize our Dignity; let us honor our Archetype; let us know the power of the Mystery, and for what Christ died. St. Gregory Nazianzen ( ), Easter homily 7

9 Divine Mercy: May we adore the Risen hrist is risen, alleluia! Next C Sunday, April 8, is the great Feast of Divine Mercy. The floodgates of God s Mercy are opened. Our hour of Mercy begins at 3 p.m. Jesus has asked us to trust in His Mercy. Perform acts of Mercy out of love for God, and receive Holy Communion on the Day of Mercy. God promised exceptional graces to those who have prepared themselves for this feast. We will conduct a special Divine Mercy Service here on Sunday, April 8, at 3 p.m. God s works kindle hope in our hearts Here is an excerpt from Pope Francis homily at the Easter Vigil, March 26, T he Lord is alive and wants to be sought among the living. After having found Him, each person is sent out by Him to announce the Easter message, to awaken and resurrect hope in hearts burdened by sadness, in those who struggle to find meaning in life. This is so necessary today. However, we must not proclaim ourselves. Rather, as joyful servants of hope, we must announce the Risen One by our lives and by our love; otherwise we will be only an international organization full of followers and good rules, yet incapable of offering the hope for which the world longs. How can we strengthen our hope? The liturgy of this night offers some guidance. It teaches us to remember the works of God. The readings describe God s faithfulness, the history of His love toward us. The living word of God is able to involve us in this history of love, nourishing our hope and renewing our joy. The Gospel also reminds us of this: in order to kindle hope in the hearts of the women, the angel tells them: Remember what [Jesus] told you. Remember the words of Jesus, remember all that He has done in our lives. Let us not forget His words and His works, otherwise we will lose hope and become hopeless Christians. Let us instead remember the Lord, His goodness and His life-giving words which have touched us. Let us remember them and make them ours, to be sentinels of the morning who know how to help others see the signs of the Risen Lord. Christ is risen! And we have the possibility of opening our hearts and receiving His gift of hope. Let us open our hearts to hope and go forth. May the memory of His works and His words be the bright star which directs our steps in the ways of faith toward that Easter that will have no end.
