4 4 Appunti del Parroco: a Message from the Pastor A s far as we know, the basic essential structure of the Mass has been intact since apostolic times. It seems likely that in the earliest days of the Church, before the recognition of the gospels and apostolic letters as Scripture, the Saturday synagogue services served as the scriptural element of the liturgy. Later, when the Christians were thrown out of the synagogues and as the New Testament writings became part of the sacred Scriptures of the Church, the basic twofold structure of the liturgy of the Word (Mass of the Catechumens) and liturgy of the Eucharist were established. This single act of worship allowed the Church along with her catechumens to come together in unity around the table of the Word and still preserved the sacredness of the Eucharistic sacrifice for the eyes of the initiated alone. Is this not the same movement as the Paschal meal of the risen Jesus with his disciples? Walking with them he explained the Scriptures to them; sitting with them at table he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them (Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 1347). There is a common outline and rhythm in all the different ritual expressions of the Holy Mass or Divine Liturgy: All gather together. Christians come together in one place for the Eucharistic assembly. At its head is Christ himself, the principal agent of the Eucharist. He is high priest of the New Covenant; it is he himself who presides invisibly over every Eucharistic celebration. It is in Structure of the Mass representing him that the bishop or priest acting in the person of Christ the head (in persona Christi capitis) presides over the assembly, speaks after the readings, receives the offerings, and says the Eucharistic Prayer (CCC, No. 1348). The faithful, or members of the faithful as their representatives, respond in dialogue and attentiveness to the actions of Christ the Head. The priest or bishop in the homily exhort the people to continue to respond to the Word of God in their lives. The offertory is made symbolizing the union between Christ and the sacrifices of His Church militant in uniting themselves in their sufferings and virtues to the Head. The Sacrifice of Calvary and Christ s presentation of that sacrifice in the institution of the Eucharistic and the Last Supper are recalled in the words of the priest acting in persona Christi capitis. Those disposed to reception of Holy Communion are allowed to unite themselves with Him in that sacred act and, strengthened by the word, example, and person of Christ, are sent to live out the Gospel in the World. [W]e call this food Eucharist, and no one may take part in it unless he believes that what we teach is true, has received baptism for the forgiveness of sins and new birth, and lives in keeping with what Christ taught (CCC, No. 1355, quoting St. Justin s First Apology). Ven. Pope Pius XII on development of human elements in the liturgy: T he sacred liturgy does, in fact, include divine as well as human elements. The former, instituted as they have been by God, cannot be changed in any way by men. But the human components admit of various modifications, as the needs of the age, circumstance and the good of souls may require, and as the ecclesiastical hierarchy, under guidance of the Holy Spirit, may have authorized. This will explain the marvelous variety of Eastern and Western rites. Here is the reason for the gradual addition, through successive development, of particular religious customs and practices of piety only faintly discernible in earlier times. Hence likewise it happens from time to time that certain devotions long since forgotten are revived and practiced anew. All these developments attest the abiding life of the immaculate Spouse of Jesus Christ through these many centuries. They are the sacred language she uses, as the ages run their course, to profess to her divine Spouse her own faith along with that of the nations committed to her charge, and her own unfailing love. They furnish proof, besides, of the wisdom of the teaching method she employs to arouse and nourish constantly the Christian instinct (Mediator Dei, n. 50, Nov. 20, 1947).

For so many years you bore in your own flesh this cancerous disease that destroys the very fiber of our being, and who had recourse to the source of all grace when the power of man could do no more. You were favored with the vision of Jesus coming down from His Cross to heal your affliction. Ask of God and Our Lady, the cure of the sick whom we entrust to you. (Silently recall their names.) Aided in this way by your powerful intercession, we shall sing to God, now and for all eternity, a song of gratitude for His great goodness and mercy. Amen. 7:30 P.M.
