MASS INTENTIONS: The standard stipend for Masses in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis is $10. Requests should indicate whether people are living or deceased, and must be typed or written legibly. Except in the year of an individual s death, no more than 12 Saturday evening/sunday Masses may be requested or offered for the repose of his/her soul in a calendar year. 3 Announcements Please pray for the repose of the souls of: Richard Greene, who passed away Feb. 10. We extend our deepest condolences to his brother, Bernie Greene, and all of his family and friends. Denver Jones, who passed away Feb. 12. We extend our deepest condolences to his daughter, Krista Jones, and all of his family and friends. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace. We will take up a second collection every Sunday throughout Lent. This weekend s is for the Black and Indian Missions. Next weekend s will be for Catholic Radio Indy. The all-you-can-eat Parish Breakfast is today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Priori Hall. Cost is $6 per person with a maximum $30 per family. We will pray the Way of the Cross on Fridays of Lent after the 7:30 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. Masses. Pope Francis has declared a special Day of Prayer and Fasting for Peace to be observed worldwide on Friday, Feb. 23. It is to be offered in particular for the populations of the Democratic Republic of Congo and of South Sudan. Any registered parishioner who didn t get a bottle of Lourdes water last weekend may contact the parish office to arrange pickup of your bottle. 4 4 Appunti del Parroco: a Message from the Pastor R eview is always a good thing. So, just as a reminder: A sacrament is an outward, sensible sign instituted by Christ in order to give grace There are seven sacraments. Why seven? Because it seemed fitting to God to give us seven sacraments. There are certainly other ways in which He manifests His grace to us, but, guided by the Holy Spirit, the Church as the bride of Christ has discerned over time that there are seven concrete means by which God offers us graces simply by doing the things necessary in the physical realm with the right intention. In this way, God allows us to control Him. The seven sacraments of the Church were instituted for a twofold purpose: namely, in order to perfect man in things pertaining to the worship of God according to the religion of Christian life, and to be a remedy against the defects caused by sin (Summa III, 65, 1). This means that the sacraments correspond to times, events, occurrences and needs that man has. Which makes perfect sense since the sacraments exist for man s sake, not for God s. As such, the sacraments can be divided into three major categories: the sacraments of initiation; the sacraments of healing; and the sacraments at the service of communion and the mission of the faithful. The sacraments of initiation are: Baptism, which washes away sin and incorporates us into the divine life of God through Christ s sonship; Confirmation, which gives us the gifts of the Holy Spirit and allows us to actively participate as an instrument of God s grace and mercy in the life of the Church; and Eucharist, which allows us to participate in the ultimate thanksgiving of God and enter into the worship of the Church by uniting our lives to Christ s own oblation. The sacraments of healing are primarily concerned with actual sins and are: Penance (Reconciliation), and Anointing of the Sick. The sacraments of mission are: Marriage, which gives jurisdiction of a married couple over the basic unit of the Church, the family; and Holy Orders, which gives jurisdiction of men over the Church as a whole. These seven sacraments correspond to the different The seven sacraments stages of our own spiritual lives and to the needs that we as frail human beings have in the order of grace. They make up for an exceed, if used to their potential, the original union that man had with God and, as such, lead to the deification of man. They are the graces provided to us in order to fill the hole left in our nature by original sin, a hole that by both our current and preternatural existence was and will always be meant to be filled by the loving God. For spiritual life has a certain conformity with the life of the body: just as other corporeal things have a certain likeness to things spiritual. Now a man attains perfection in the corporeal life in two ways: first, in regard to his own person; secondly, in regard to the whole community of the society in which he lives, for man is by nature a social animal. With regard to himself man is perfected in the life of the body, in two ways; first directly [per se, i.e. by acquiring some vital perfection]; secondly, indirectly [per accidens, i.e. by the removal of hindrances to life, such as ailments, or the like]. Now the life of the body is perfected directly in three ways. First, by generation whereby a man begins to be and to live: and corresponding to this in the spiritual life there is Baptism, which is a spiritual regeneration, according to Titus 3:5: By the laver of regeneration, etc. Secondly, by growth whereby a man is brought to perfect size and strength: and corresponding to this in the spiritual life there is Confirmation, in which the Holy Ghost is given to strengthen us. Wherefore the disciples who were already baptized were bidden thus: Stay you in the city till you be endued with power from on high (Luke 24:49). Thirdly, by nourishment, whereby life and strength are preserved to man; and corresponding to this in the spiritual life there is the Eucharist. Wherefore it is said (John 6:54): Except you eat of the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink His blood, you shall not have life in you. And this would be enough for man if he had an impassible life, both corporally and spiritually; but since man is liable at times to both corporal and spiritual infirmity, i.e. sin, hence man needs a cure from his infirmity; which cure is twofold. One is the healing, that restores health; and corresponding to this in the spiritual life there is Penance, according to Psalm 40:5: Heal my soul, for I have sinned against Thee. The other is the restoration of former vigor by means of suitable diet and exercise: and corresponding to this in the spiritual life there is Extreme Unction, which removes the remainder of sin, and prepares

5 man for final glory. Wherefore it is written (James 5:15): And if he be in sins they shall be forgiven him. In regard to the whole community, man is perfected in two ways. First, by receiving power to rule the community and to exercise public acts: and corresponding to this in the spiritual life there is the sacrament of order, according to the saying of Hebrews 7:27, that priests offer sacrifices not for themselves only, but also for the people. Secondly, in regard to natural propagation. This is accomplished by Matrimony both in the corporal and in the spiritual life: since it is not only a sacrament but also a function of nature (Summa III, 65, 1). 5 Parishioners can get FORMED for free Holy Rosary has purchased a subscription to FORMED, which we are offering to our parishioners at no cost. Baptisms: Please contact Fr. McCarthy at the parish office or to schedule baptisms and required baptismal instruction. Joining the parish: Parish Registration Forms can be found in the rotating rack in the vestibule. Completed forms can be placed in the collection basket or mailed to the office. Electronic donations: Online Giving, a convenient way to donate electronically, makes it easy for you to fulfill your financial commitments to the parish even when you are unable to attend Mass.
