4 4 Appunti del Parroco: a Message from the Pastor A s Catholic Christians our most constant source of exposure to the traditional sources of theological truth (sometimes expressed as the Loci Theologici) is the liturgies of the Church. From this reality comes the expression, lex orandi, lex credendi, or the law of praying is the law of believing. This truth is perhaps the rationale for so much of the anxieties in the Church when liturgical changes take place. Many people experience liturgical change as change in dogma or belief. Sometimes this is true. There are many cases throughout history in which bishops and/or priests have altered the liturgy in order to influence the belief of the Church. However, it is always difficult to perceive how someone will receive a change; therefore it is always difficult to exactly correlate a particular liturgical change to a particular belief. Likewise, culture and context provide a huge amount of background for any liturgical experience, and those colour how people understand any given action. Complicating this further is the legitimate diversity in liturgical rites and customs. Within any given rite, e.g. the liturgical seasons, and in between rites, e.g. the Roman versus the Ethiopic, the differences can be immense. So what makes the liturgy of all faithful Catholics the same? It is the mystery that is core to the liturgy, the Paschal mystery of Christ. Are you living in poverty? Do you want to take control of your life, improve your living conditions and find purpose in your life? If so, then the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is ready to help. Changing Lives Forever is an 18-week class designed to help individuals living in poverty develop a plan to improve the quality of their lives. The sessions are based on Philip E. DeVol s book, Getting Ahead in a Just-Getting-By World. They begin Many liturgical rites, one Holy Sacrifice The mystery of Christ is so unfathomably rich that it cannot be exhausted by its expression in any single liturgical tradition. The history of the blossoming and development of these rites witnesses to a remarkable complementarity. When the Churches lived their respective liturgical traditions in the communion of the faith and the sacraments of the faith, they enriched one another and grew in fidelity to Tradition and to the common mission of the whole Church. The diverse liturgical traditions have arisen by very reason of the Church s mission. Churches of the same geographical and cultural area came to celebrate the mystery of Christ through particular expressions characterized by the culture: in the tradition of the deposit of faith, in liturgical symbolism, in the organization of fraternal communion, in the theological understanding of the mysteries and in various forms of holiness. Through the liturgical life of a local church, Christ, the light and salvation of all peoples, is made manifest to the particular people and culture to which that Church is sent and in which she is rooted. The Church is catholic, capable of integrating into her unity, while purifying them, all the authentic riches of cultures (Catechism of the Catholic Church, Nos. 1201, 1202). Every time the Holy Sacrifice of Calvary is represented in the liturgical life of the Church, whether it is during a Solemn High Mass in the Latin Rite, a monastic Divine Liturgy in the Byzantine Church or a Coptic liturgy in a rural Egyptian church, whether the language is German, Old Slavonic or Ge ez, it is the same Passion, Death and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ that is presented to the Church. This is what makes the Universal Church, that in each church the ontological and eschatological reality of the same Saviour is made manifest to His people consistently because of the diversity of expressions and appearances. Break the cycle of poverty and take control of your life Tuesday, March 6, and continue weekly through July 3 at the Catholic Center, 1400 N. Meridian St. A free dinner will be provided at each session. Applications are due Friday, Feb. 9. Orientation is Tuesday, Feb. 20. Applications are hanging on a bulletin board in the church vestibule. For information, contact Judith Sullivan at

Thompson or anyone else connected to the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. A letter from the archbishop: Your donations make a difference Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On February 11, 2018, our archdiocese will be taking up the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe (CCEE). During the time of communist reign in many countries, practicing the Faith became illegal, church buildings were confiscated, and people were forced to hide and secretly share the truths of the Gospel. After decades of institutional oppression and persecution, Catholics still struggle to rebuild not only their physical places of worship but also their church ministries and communities. With your support of this collection, the Church is providing resources to these communities to breathe new life into the Faith once again. The country of Albania is nestled north of Greece on the Adriatic Sea. This small country suffered greatly under communist rule. In the capital of Tirana, located in the middle of the country, the Church is continuing to restore not only its structures but also the spirituality of the faithful after years of oppression. In 1996, the congregation of sisters known as the Company of Mary Our Lady founded a kindergarten, the first Catholic school in the entire capital city. Since then, they have opened a school for grades 1-9 and a daily activity center for children. The sisters are now serving more than 700 children daily from all different backgrounds, faiths and ethnic groups. With your support of CCEE, these sisters will be able to make critical repairs to their building to continue their ministry. Your generosity helps the sisters to continue teaching children and equips the congregation to provide a space to build peaceful communities. Your donations make a difference for those still struggling in the aftermath of communist rule. Thank you for your help to restore the Church and build the future in Central and Eastern Europe. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Charles C. Thompson Archbishop of Indianapolis FamilyCatechism.com Check it out! You ll be glad you did for all Eternity!
