I wish to thank the parishioners of St. Mary Parish for welcoming me so warmly. One of the things I ve heard from many people was the desire to rebuild the community here so as to honor the past but also to provide hope for the future of the parish. I feel that there is a good spirit in the parish and many who are willing to help wherever they can. In the first reading today, it talked about the disciples building the early church in fearful conditions. I am not going to ask you to risk your life... but I am going to ask that you step outside of your comfort zone. One of the things that seems so important to me is mass attendance. I have been working to encourage our children and young families to make Sunday mass part of their family commitment. To truly be part of something, one needs to show up! Recall the second reading, love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. I know we have all had experiences that have shown us that actions speak louder than words. So what I am going to ask is that you invite someone to join you at mass. A neighbor, friend, relative, or maybe someone who just needs a ride may be the one waiting for an invitation from you. In today s gospel Jesus asks that we remain in him and promises we will bear fruit and by this shall become his disciples. Who will you bring to the Lord? Gail Ferraiolo ST. MARY PARISH IS A PARISH THAT PRACTICES STEWARDSHIP SPIRITUAL REFLECTIONS ON STEWARDSHIP Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. 1 John 3: 18 Regarding our Catholic faith, do you walk the talk? Do your actions reflect what it means to be a good disciple? Are you an active participant at Sunday Mass? Are you joyful when participating in parish ministry? Do you give gratefully and generously with your financial support to your parish and other Church needs? If not, it s not too late to start! Dear Father Joseph and Parishioners, Thank you for your warm welcome to me and the sister students from Assumption College for Sisters, Denville, NJ. When people hear about our mission to educate Catholic sisters and lay people as well, they are heartened to know that there are over 40 sisters studying at the college from the United States and overseas. By educating just one sister, we can positively impact the lives of those she will minister to in the areas of healthcare, education and an astounding array of social and spiritual services. Perhaps you would like to take a course with us or learn how you can assist us in our mission of educating the next generation of Catholic sisters? Please feel free to me at president@acs350.org, visit our website at or be in touch with our Director of Institutional Advancement, Louis Scarpa, at development@acs350org. God bless Saint Mary Parish! Sister Joseph Spring, SCC. ALOHA & CIAO! Italy and Hawaii "shook hands" at the Saint Mary Choir "Lasagna Luau!" After many rehearsals and beautifully celebrated masses, the choir got together for an evening of good times, good food and great company. The Fr. Kevin Cahill Room transformed into an Hawaiian-themed luau, with tiki torches burning in the parking lot, pina coladas, trays of homemade lasagna, and a banquet tabled filled with potluck desserts. Singing as part of the choir is a true joy. We welcome you to sing with us and enjoy some lasagna along the way! MAY CROWNING We will be having the May Crowning on Sunday, May 6 th at the conclusion of the 12:00 PM First Communion Mass. TO HONOR OUR BLESSED MOTHER During the month of May, our Eucharistic holy hour on Monday evenings will include the Adoration, the Miraculous Medal Novena, the Rosary, and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. What a beautiful way to honor our patroness, our Blessed Mother, by spending one hour each week during the month of May, a month which we honor all our Mothers, and especially our Blessed Mother. Please join us each Monday, with the exception of Memorial Day, when our holy hour will be moved to Tuesday evening, May 29 th. FLOWERS FOR THE BLESSED MOTHER If anyone would like to donate flowers to be placed on Mary s altar in memory of a loved one, during the month of May please call the rectory. What a beautiful way to honor and remember a loved one by also honoring our Blessed Mother. SECOND COLLECTION Next weekend, May 5 th and 6 th the second collection is for the Archdiocesan Assessment. MOTHERS DAY REMEMBERANCE ENVELOPE Please send in your Mother s Day remembrance envelope before Mothers Day. HACKENSACK WALK-IN DINNER VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO PREPARE FOOD Once again, our Parish will be serving dinner to the homeless and working poor at the Family Promise Shelter in Hackensack on Wednesday, May 9 th. We anticipate feeding about 125 people. We are in need of volunteers to prepare various food dishes in their homes and to bring the hot food to the Fr. Roger Troy Hall between 12:30 PM and 3:00 PM on May 9 th. Information and sign-up sheets are located in the outer vestibules of the church. For further information, please call Jane Bishop at Thank you for your generous support!!
4 The Choristers (our choir for grades 3-8) led the music at the 9:30 am mass on April 22. Our student cantors, Arianna, Owen and Sophia, led our acclamations. This is a great group of kids, they have a good time and they are respectful of one another. Father Joe and the parish presented each student with a garden in a jar as thanks for their exemplary work. The Choristers will sing again for the great feast of Pentecost, May 20, for the 9:30 am mass. There will be a couple of rehearsals ahead of time. Stay tuned for an . NEW students are welcome to sing with the group. Just see Mr. Scarpa after mass or send an to music@stmarycloster.org. We serve God, the community and have a good time in the process! This is a great way to serve God and the community, and research tells us that choir is a great way to be happier and healthier. The Choir of Saint Mary enhances the beauty of our liturgies, encouraging us to raise our voices in prayer and offers choral pieces for meditation. The group rehearses on Tuesday evenings at 7 pm and sings Sunday for the Noon Mass. Fourpart singing and a fun atmosphere is a great part of this experience. We are in need of baritones and tenors. Previous singing experience is not necessary. See Louis Scarpa after Mass or contact music@stmarycloster.org. Good things await you! Our statue of Mary has been returned to her original niche in front of the church. When our church was built, it was the custom that each side altar was dedicated to Mary and Joseph. Giving Mary a place of prominence is most appropriate in our church, since Mary is our patroness. Avotive candle has been placed near the statute.ave Maria! The power of communal prayer is profound, as many world religions and spiritual paths recognize. One of the greatest privileges that we know as Catholics is participation in Mass, a celebration by the community, the Church. When we actively participate in the Mass by entering into dialogue with the priest, reciting and singing the communal prayers, we can experience growth and understanding in our faith and unite in spirit. We can enact change, with divine assistance, in our lives and the world around us. The music at mass is meant to express and help us understand our faith. Our unity in voice reflects our unity in faith. Let s enrich our communal prayer life at Mass by singing the hymns. When we understand the mass as the source and summit of our lives as Catholics we may experience a deeper understanding of prayer.
5 Many thanks to Sister Joseph Spring, SCC, president of Assumption College for Sisters (ACS), Denville, NJ,and the sister students for visiting Saint Mary Parish. ASC primarily educates Catholic sisters from the US and overseas to prepare them for a lifetime of ministry to heal, teach and minister. There are over 50 students enrolled! Communal singing expresses our oneness in the Body of Christ as we process to receive the Eucharist at Mass. Most times, a hymn is chosen that features a very simple refrain, such as Gifts of Finest Wheat, wherein we can process to receive without having to carry a songbook and simply sing the refrain from memory. The cantor or choir can then sing the verses. What a beautiful moment in God s sight as he sees us singing as we prepare to receive the Body and Blood of Christ. On another note, it doesn t matter if you have a good voice to sing at mass. And sing at mass, whether the song is old, new, fast, slow, loud or soft, to your liking or not, it will enrich your prayer life. By educating one sister, we can help her transform thousands of lives through her ministry. Catholic sisters are working to solve the problems of poverty, lack of education, and healthcare. They minister where many cannot or will not go. Sisters communities are responsible for funding the education of their young sisters while at the same time caring for their retired sisters. For education, they receive no diocesan, government or Vatican funding. They have only us, grateful lay Catholics, to rely upon. To learn more about supporting a Catholic sister s education or to enroll in a course as a lay person, please contact Louis Scarpa at development@acs350.org or Sister Joseph Spring at president@acs350.org. Teach a sister touch the world! God is made visible in those around us! The Archdiocese of Newark, through the Sharing God s Blessing Annual Appeal, sees God in the thousands of people it cares for each day by teaching, sheltering and nurturing mind, body and spirit. Many parishioners of Saint Mary likewise see God in others and have responded generously to the Appeal. Currently, 53 households from Saint Mary Parish have pledged $15,000 toward our parish goal of $32,410. The average gift is $ THANK YOU to all who made a gift. Is it time to honestly ask of ourselves: Am I doing enough? Can I do more in light of what God has given me? No gift is too small or too great. To make a pledge, please visit: Envelopes are available at the church doors. Thank you and God bless you.
