I hope you will make time to be with us and attend. As we reflect on the Passion and Death of Jesus, I invite you to reflect, not as a casual bystander but as an active participant, and truly enter into the great events of salvation history that we remember at this time. The 40 days of Lent transition into the great 50 days of Easter. As we have prayed, fasted and given alms during this sacred time, hopefully we have developed strong new habits of prayer and have grown closer to Jesus and that our Lent has been fruitful in a spiritual way for all. I look forward to celebrating this most holy of weeks with all of you. Love in Jesus, Fr. Paul. ST. MARY PARISH IS A PARISH THAT PRACTICES STEWARDSHIP Last Sunday s collection was as follows: Amount Collected in 127 Sunday Envelopes... $3, Total Collected in Loose Money... $2, Total Collected for Diocesan Assessment... $3, Total Sunday Collection... $8, Last year s collection for same week was... $5, SPIRITUAL REFLECTIONS ON STEWARDSHIP As they were marching out, they came upon a man of Cyrene, Simon by name; this man they pressed into service to carry his cross. Matthew 27: 32 The Lord calls us to love God and to love our neighbor. Every day we are presented with opportunities to love our neighbor and help him carry his cross. These opportunities aren t usually big events; they are usually ordinary occurrences like helping someone carry their groceries or holding the door open for them. The key is putting the other person s needs before our own and not expecting anything in return. PLEASE PRAY FOR THE SICK Ally Aagard, Paula Bertelloni, Alana Bronze, Diego Bronze, Mary Ann Buckley, Dolores Collier, Michael Conmy, Normita Crystal, Lee Ann Davito, Frank Forte, Lillian Guyt, Ed Koch, Teresa Meierdierks, Donna Oettinger, John Pagano, Joan Pinto, Richard Pinto, Jim Walsh THIS WEEK S SPECIAL OFFERINGS Altar Bread In memory of Michael and Nellie Duffy. Thank you to all who give regularly and generously as your means allow. We have been operating at a deficit on a weekly basis for awhile now as you have probably noticed as you look at the financial statement in the bulletins each week. At the finance council s direction, I have cut our operating expenses down significantly in the past year; however our weekly income in the Sunday offertory is well below what is needed each week. It is my obligation to give you a broad perspective on the current state of our financial affairs. Currently we need to pay our property insurance bill which is about eighteen thousand dollars, as well as some unanticipated emergency repairs to repair a clogged sewer in the school building that will require excavation this bill will be about eight thousand dollars, and our current bills for the month of April are at least 12 thousand dollars. We are also three months behind in our assessment payments as we do not receive enough in those collections to pay our whole bill each month, but we give what we can. We also are expected to give 25 percent of our income to support Catholic education in the Archdiocese and currently we have not been able to pay that bill which is about 16 thousand dollars. Everyone needs to be aware of these realties that face us financially as a parish family as we face the months ahead. As a pastor my first responsibility is to pay our vendors and salaries first, and then pay the in house debts to the archdiocese. This was the guidance I received when I became a pastor 12 years ago. I believe in total financial transparency, and now ten months into the current fiscal year, I wanted to let you know exactly where we stand financially, so you might think about your planned giving over the next few months and perhaps if you can assist your parish by being extra generous in the Easter collection next week, and in the months ahead. Whatever you can do to assist your parish would be much appreciated. Gratefully, Fr. Paul. RECEPTION FOR SISTER GEORGETTE On Sunday, April 23 rd, following the 11:30 AM Mass, there will be a Champagne Brunch in Tenafly, at the Clinton Inn to celebrate Sister Georgette and her 13 years with us. There is a cost per person and a response needed before April 9 th. For more information please call the Rectory at LENTEN REGULATIONS Good Friday is a day of both Fast and Abstinence. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the paschal fast to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals, which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. In REPARATION for ABORTION A peaceful and prayerful march in reparation for abortion will be held on Good Friday in Englewood. You're invited to join the Legion of Mary and the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal to pray the Stations of the Cross, the Rosary, and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. They will assemble at 9:30 AM in the parking lot at the corner of Demarest Street and Dean Street and march to the abortion clinic at 40 Engle Street. As this is a peaceful event, please do not bring signs or posters. EASTER SUNDAY FAMILY MASS The 9:30 AM Mass on Easter is a Family Mass. Chocolate crosses will be given out to the young and refreshments will follow in the Fr. Kevin Cahill room. SAVE THE DATE Our parish is hosting a deanery-wide visit by Joseph Cardinal Tobin, Archbishop of Newark on Tuesday, April 18 th. Mass will be celebrated at 7:30 PM, and a Town Hall meeting will follow afterwards. We need to get an accurate head count, and ask you to sign up in advance. There is a sign-up sheet in front of the Altar. We look forward to seeing you on April 18 th. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO PREPARE FOOD FOR HACKENSACK WALK-IN DINNER Once again, our Parish will be serving dinner to the homeless and working poor at the Family Promise Shelter in Hackensack on Wednesday, May 3 rd. We anticipate feeding about 125 people. We are in need of volunteers to prepare various food dishes in their homes and to bring the hot food to the Fr. Roger Troy Hall between 12:30 PM and 3:00 PM on May 3 rd. Information and signup sheets are located in the entrances of the church. For further information, please call Jane Bishop at Thank you.

4 How to make a Palm Cross (diagram on the reverse side) Step 1 Take a palm that is about 2 feet long and 1/2" wide (if it tapers at the top, this is good!). Hold the palm upright, so the tapered end points toward the ceiling. Step 2 Then bend the top end down and toward you so that the bend is about 5 or 6 inches from the bottom of the palm. Step 3 Step 4 Step 5 Step 6 Step 7 Step 8 Step 9 About a third of the way from the bend you just made, twist the section you've pulled down to the right, forming a right angle. About an inch and a half away from the "stem" of the cross, bend this arm of the palm back behind the palm so that it is now facing to your left. Make the bend at a good length to form the right arm of the Cross. Folding that same section at a point that equals the length on the right side, bend it on the left side and bring the end forward over what is now the front of the cross. From the very center of the Cross, fold that arm up and to the upper right (in a "northeast" direction) so that it can wrap around where the upright post of the Cross and the right arm intersect. Fold this down and to the left behind the Cross......and then fold it toward the right so that it is parallel and under the transverse arms of the Cross. Bring it up behind the Cross again, this time folding it up toward the "northwest" direction. Step 10 Tuck the tapered end into the transverse section you made in step 7... Step 11 Step 12...and pull through. Turn the Cross over; this side will be the front. Trim the tapered end if necessary, remembering that the palm is a sacramental and any part you trim away should be kept and respected as a sacramental!
