I hope and pray that this new year will be one filled with excitement and joy as we begin to learn more about the love our Lord has for each and every one of us. To all the students and parents who may be new to our program, you will see that out catechists and staff are all well trained and prepared to share our faith with all who enter our doors. It s our hope that you will all feel welcomed, not only in our religious education program, but in our parish and church as well. The religious education staff and volunteers are here to help you nourish faith in your children. As you know, we have returned to our regular Sunday mass schedule of 7:30 AM, 9:30 AM, and noon. Due to the extremely low attendance at the 7:30 AM mass, it has been decided that this mass will be celebrated without music. Although all Sunday masses should be celebrated with the same liturgical music and solemnity, without many voices to participate in the singing, at this point we will celebrate this mass without singing or musical accompaniment. th WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26 STS. Blessed Virgin Mary Candle Congratulations Ashley and Bob. Sanctuary Candle In memory of Lee and George Hofmann. Last week, on September 14, Cardinal Joseph Tobin, the Archbishop of Newark, invited all the people and clergy to a prayer service at the Cathedral Basilica. Over 2,000 people attended. At the service, we prayed for all those who have been abused by clergy over the years. We prayed for their healing and well being. During the service, we heard the horrific story of a victim of abuse and a call for change and transparency in our church. The Cardinal assured us that the days of business as usual are over. As more revelations about clergy abuse are brought to light, please know that here at St. Mary Parish, every protocol of Protecting God s Children is being followed. The clergy, staff, and catechists here at St. Mary are all deeply committed individuals and have been cleared to serve in their positions. Children in class, or at Children s Liturgy of the Word, are never left unsupervised. Servers and other liturgical ministers are always within view of parents and guardians. Here at St. Mary we are all committed to the protection of all who enter our doors and worship with us, especially our young people. If anyone should have any concerns, please feel free to speak with me or one of our dedicated staff members. I also encourage our religious education families and all who worship at St. Mary s to become engaged in the life of the parish on all levels. Over the next few Sundays we will be reflecting on what it means to be a parishioner. Ultimately, it is about being a follower of Jesus Christ. I ask and pray that the Holy Spirit guide us as we explore the why and how we live this as parishioners. Sincerely in the Lord, Fr. Joe We Pray for the Sick Irene Abad, Paula Bertelloni, Christian Brueck, Fran Caldwell, Dolores Collier, Lee Ann Davito, Lisa Deegan, Desiderio Fernandes, Frank Forte, Ed Koch, Sr. Dominic Marie McDonnell, Carol Munkins, David O Hanlon, John Pagano, Alicia Parent, Joan Pinto, Richard Pinto, Jim Walsh

Blessings to Sue and all those Closterites who make a difference in the lives of others! Welcome New Finance Council Members St Mary's is honored to welcome Ms. Diana Marcellino and Mr. Thomas Calabro, parishioners, to serve on the Parish Finance Council. Both bring a love and familiarity for the parish as well as their understanding of business practices in service to the parish mission. "As Secretary-Treasurer of the Parish Corporation, the Pastor is responsible for the management of Parish finances (canon 532). He is accountable for competent and dependable stewardship. Canon law specifically outlines a requirement that each Parish must have a Finance Council. The relationship between the Pastor and the Finance Council is one of support and collaboration. The Finance Council should be composed of Parishioners. However, persons with expertise in financial affairs and civil law may be drawn from beyond the Parish." Archdiocese of Newark. A full explanation of the role of the finance council is available at rcan.org, search for "parish financial council" in the tool bar. In making the sign of the cross with holy water, we are mindful that we are called to renew our baptismal promises of rejecting Satan, his works and his empty promises, and to profess our Catholic faith.
4 ST. MARY PARISH WORSHIPPING SINCE 1911 Religious Education News Religious Education Classes begin today, Sunday, September 23rd for grades K through 6. Classes for grades 6 and 7 begin on Tuesday, September 25th. There is still room in some of our classes if anyone is still interested. Call for information. What does it mean to be a "parishioner?" Great question! It starts with a desire to follow Jesus Christ, to seek to grow in faith as an individual and a family, to pray together with His Church weekly at Mass, to become active in the mission of the parish outreach and support the parish financially so that her mission of salvation and service may continue. Over the next few weeks, St Mary's will discuss this question at mass, encourage folks to commit and re-commit joyfully and meaningfully as followers of our Lord. Information about registering, joining parish ministries and a financial report are scheduled to be broadcast. Next weekend: parish financial overview at all masses. God bless you and St. Mary's as you "step up to the plate" as a parishioner! Greetings to all! As agreed at our last Deanery meeting in the Spring we have scheduled Dennis Corcoran to offer an introductory workshop on the proven benefits of Family Based Religious Education to our Deanery on Monday, October 1st beginning at 7:00 PM in the Fr. Roger Troy Hall. We thank the parish of St. Mary, for being our host site for this Deanery presentation which will enlighten all on this most valuable tool to evangelize the entire family. How appropriate it is that we gather on the Memorial of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, who sought to do great things with great love. As our love empowers each of us, in our unique capabilities, to share, nurture and celebrate with our future generation may we seek the intercession of St. Thérèse as we embark upon this Deanery initiative and come to recognize in our children and their families faith born anew. Animal Blessing and Pet Food Drive October 4th Join us at our Annual Blessing of the Animals & Pet Food Drive on Thursday, October 4th, at 3:30 PM or 7:00 PM. We will gather in the St. Francis Prayer Garden, and the blessing will be held rain or shine. Animals must be on leashes or in carriers. We are sponsoring a pet food drive to benefit the Closter Animal Welfare Society. Attendees are encouraged to bring donations of wet or dry cat/kitten and dog/puppy food. The Magnificat Day is Coming to Brooklyn The Magnificat Day is coming to Brooklyn s historic Kings Theatre on Saturday, October 6th. The day promises to be memorable, filled with uplifting prayer, world-class music, fellowship with the Magnificat family and an opportunity to venerate the relics of St. Therese, the Little Flower, and her parents, Sts. Louis and Zelie Martin. The day will feature keynote addresses from Sean Cardinal O Malley, O.F.M., Cap., Bishop Robert Barron, Fr. Peter Cameron, O.P., and Dr. Scott Hahn. For more information or to register, visit Parish Communication: Keeping You Informed The parish seeks to keep parishioners informed of happenings in areas of Religious Education, ministries, social events and finances. To that end, regular blasts, an active Facebook page and bulletin announcements are being ramped-up. We want to keep you "in the know". Please register with the parish or if you are registered, please send along your address. Currently, about 250 parishioners receive from St. Mary's. Head over to FACEBOOK and FOLLOW our page as well. Send an E to Grace at gditzel@stmarycloster.org with your info. Follow and Like St. Mary's Follow and like St. Mary's on FaceBook. Why? Because the latest news and announcements are posted there and by "liking," St. Mary's we reach more circles of people. Food Pantry We no longer have the ongoing Food Pantry. Please do not leave bags in the vestibules. You are welcome to bring them down to the Closter food pantry. We will have food drives at certain times of the years and will announce them in the bulletin.
