2 Reflecting on God s Word The Beatitudes can certainly seem illogical and absurd unless we consider the person who is speaking. It is Jesus, the one who became lowly and despised in order to become our righteousness, our sanctification, and our redemption. He personified the anawim to become the true hope of all people. Jesus is the insulted, persecuted one who relies on God alone; he is also the merciful peacemaker and source of all blessing. To the poor, the mourning, the persecuted, Jesus says, Everything that you are suffering, I have suffered. God did not abandon me and I will not abandon you. To the rich, the powerful, the content, Jesus says, I shared every blessing I had with the poor and the lowly, even my life. Do the same and you too will know God s saving mercy. To both Jesus says, Trust in the Lord of infinite possibilities, who will bless you with courage and peace and true joy together. Jesus speaks the words Blessed, meaning HAPPY, OR TO BE ENVIED. These sayings are known as the Beatitudes, and each blessed is followed by a reason for enjoying God s goodness. These sayings can be summarized as righteousness, in relationship with God, people, and the world around us. Situations in life will cause hunger, thirst, and persecution in the reign of God, but followers of the Lord will experience divine blessings. Together, the Beatitudes present a new set of Christian ideals that focus on a spirit of love and humility different in orientation than the usual force and exaction taken. They echo the ideals of the teachings of Jesus on mercy, spirituality, and compassion. Next weekend, besides being Super Bowl Weekend, we will have on Saturday our next FIRE night here at the parish. All are welcome, but if you plan to stay for dinner, please inform the CCD office ahead of time. Also next weekend after the 8:30am and 10am masses in the morning there will be a SUPER BOWL BREAKFAST in the hall- free to all. Please come and enjoy a coffee, a bite to eat, and some conversation. The Youth of the parish will have a SOUPER-BOWL collection at the doors, collecting your change, to be given to the Plum Food Bank. Have a SUPER week, and keep well and be warm. God bless. Fr. Al Z+ PARISH NEWS Pre-Marriage Class The next weekend for our Marriage Preparation Program will be February 10 & 11, Couples must attend both the Friday evening session 7:00pm - 10:15pm and the Saturday morning session 9:00am-1:00pm to complete the diocesan requirements for marriage instruction. Call to register. Pre-Baptism Class A class is required for any new parent(s) wishing to have their baby baptized at Our Lady of Joy Parish. 3 PARISH NEWS New Youth Room How many gallons of paint does it take to transform a 20'x20' room? Youth Ministry recently discovered the answer (five gallons) when Room Two underwent a makeover. The change took place after a need was identified to create a less formal space for youth to meet and hold discussions. Kristin Consuegra and Mike MacConnell, the youth coordinators for the church, enlisted the help of Lynne MacConnell to make their vision come to light. After several cans of paint and two over sized beanbag couches were added, groups of all ages now have a more relaxing environment for social gatherings. One of the unique attractions, is the newly installed miniature lights hanging from the ceiling. Visitors have the option of turning out the standard lights to pray under the "stars." The ultimate goal was to offer the youth in the community a safe space to "hang out", play board/video games, and enjoy fellowship on Saturday evenings. Mike MacConnell stated that, "This is a big change for the church. For the first time, youth can feel that they have a place where they can call their own and relax in a low key, non-classroom setting." He continued, "Our (Youth ministry) hope, is that by providing a less formal environment for the youth and CCD program, young Christians will become more open to a discussion about their faith, compared to the traditional catechesis." A huge thank you to Lynne for her tireless painting and multiple store trips to get needed supplies. An additional thank you to the many groups sharing the room for keeping an open mind to changes. If you have not had the opportunity to experience the newly updated airy oasis, stop by and see the direction the Holy Spirit is leading Our Lady of Joy Church. Looking at Pivotal Players in Church History Our Lady of Joy will be hosting an opportunity to learn about pivotal players in church history through a DVD series hosted by Bishop Barron called Pivotal Players. The series will be six weeks and will study the lives of Michelangelo, G.K. Chesterton, and Thomas Aquinas. Each pivotal player will be studied for two consecutive weeks. The series will begin on Wednesday, February 22 and continue each Wednesday (skipping Ash Wednesday March 1 st ) through April 5. The sessions will be held in the Father Marchukonis Hall starting at 7:00pm and will be team taught by St. John the Baptist and Our Lady of Joy Parishes. We look forward to celebrating the lives of those who have impacted our Catholic faith in a significant way as we journey on our own pilgrimage home. Souper Bowl Sunday As we have done for several years, the Youth Ministry will be taking a collection at the doors on Super Bowl Sunday called the Souper Bowl Collection for the Plum Food Pantry next weekend, February 4 & 5. Our Lady of Joy Holy Name Society Valentine Social Our Lady of Joy Holy Name Society will host a Valentine Social on Saturday, February 11 at 7:30pm in the Father Marchukonis Hall, open to all parishioners, families and friends! Tickets will be sold after all Masses on the weekends of January 21/22 and January 28/29 at a cost of $5.00/person. Ticket price includes: Appetizers, Wine/Cheese, Mixers (BYOB) and Entertainment. There will be drawings including a 50/50, and Chinese Auctions (including Lottery Ticket Basket, Wine/Spirits Basket). Night at the Races After all masses on February 4 & 5 the Knights of Columbus will be selling admission tickets and horses for the Knight at the Races on Friday, February 24. Horses are $10.00, admission tickets are $15.00 a piece or $25.00 a couple. Dinner starts at 6:30pm and the Races start at 7:30pm. Chimbote Spaghetti Dinner Once again we are planning our annual Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser for the poor of our parish and the poor of Chimbote, Peru. Our ability to continue to meet the needs of the poor is due in large part to the generous donations and support of our parish family and local businesses who donate and who believe in our mission. Please plan on attending on March 12. Bring your neighbors and friends for a delicious meal and good fellowship. 5 PARISH NEWS Serving Our Seniors Ministry SOS Ministry is sponsoring an AARP seminar on February 15 at 1pm in Father Marchukonis Hall. AARP has 1.8 million members in Pennsylvania and is a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization that helps people 50+ have independence, choice and control in ways that are beneficial and affordable. Barbara Bush, Allegheny County Volunteer Lead and Jennifer Blatz, Associate State Director for Community Outreach, will provide an overview of AARP s local advocacy and community service efforts and volunteer opportunities. Living Stations Volunteers Needed!!!! Students in grades 4-12 are needed for this year s production of the living stations. Confirmation Retreat The Confirmation Retreat for the current 8th grade will begin 12:00 noon with the Mass on March 19. Confirmation is not a graduation but a beginning, learning to live the Catholic faith in our daily lives. The students will learn how to use the wonderful tools the Catholic faith has to offer to make a joyful journey through-out their entire lives. The parents are invited and encouraged to attend the closing which includes Adoration and Benediction in the church as our Holy Father Pope Francis encourages all Catholics to join in this prayerful time. OTHER NEWS Saint Joseph Open House Saint Joseph School in Verona is sponsoring an Open House on Sunday, February 5, from 9:30am to 12:30 pm. Families are invited to come and tour the school, speak with teachers and parents, and learn about the school program and registration process. Come and see how Saint Joseph School continues to prepare students in faith and academics to meet the needs of a changing world. Please call the school office at for further information. Three Rivers Hospice Three Rivers Hospice is in need of caring volunteers to provide companionship and support for patients and families coping with terminal illness. Volunteers are an important link between the patient and the community. Besides companionship, volunteers may help with everyday tasks such as reading and writing letters. We have volunteer who provide hairstyling services, photography and reiki. We have volunteers who sew gowns for our patients, crochet lap robes, and work on craft projects. Some volunteers choose to offer support to bereaved families. Free training is provided in your area, at your convenience. If you have an hour a week to spare, we can promise you a rewarding experience that will brighten the world for others - and you.
