2 WELCOME TO KIRK IN THE HILLS Welcome to worship We are glad to have you with us today for worship. If this is your first visit to the Kirk, please introduce yourself to a pastor after worship. About today s service Today is a special day in the life of the Kirk family! We will ordain, install and commission our new elders, deacons, and trustees. We are grateful for all those that have answered the call to serve the Lord on the boards of our church. Today s sermon will offer an invitation for all of us to consider our special part in the family business. How is God calling you out from the earthly busy-ness of your life, into the heavenly business of love and compassion? The first disciples, fishermen by trade, could never have imagined what God had in store for them. I wonder if the same can be said of our community here at the Kirk? There are several opportunities for us to be family today. We invite parents and children to join us for a hot chocolate bar in the Abbey Lounge after the 9:15 a.m. service, coffee and fellowship will be in Heritage Hall, new member classes kick off, and high schoolers (and their dads) are taking in a Detroit Pistons game this afternoon. The following prayer invites us to prepare our hearts for worship and our lives for faithful living: Direct and help us, O Lord, in all our deeds, that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy name, and finally, by your mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Book of Common Worship. If you have children Childcare is available for infants and children up to age 2 from 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the nursery (Abbey 24). Please check children into the nursery before the service. Following the Word with the Children, children ages 3 through grade 12 will be dismissed for Sunday School. Worship Bags: Children are always welcome in worship! If you are worshiping with your child at the 11:00 a.m. service, please pick up a worship bag as you enter the sanctuary. Worship bags are updated weekly and designed to help children follow along in worship. If you need audio or visual assistance Hearing assistance units, large-print bulletins and hymnals are available upon request from an usher. If you are in need of prayer You may submit prayer requests online at kirkinthehills.org under Resources/Prayer Request. Stephen Ministers are available for personal, confidential prayer in Melrose Chapel after each worship service. Melrose Chapel is located on the left-hand side of the pulpit. Join us for fellowship and coffee We encourage worshipers to greet one another as they leave and assist visitors in finding their way to the coffee and fellowship in Heritage Hall after the 9:15 a.m. service. Flowers on the Altar are presented to the glory of God in loving memory of Bill and Sally Singleton by their son, Dan Singleton and family. Cover Art - The Four Fishermen, Unknown Kuna artist, Public Domain This richly decorated mola is from the Kuna of Panama. Mola s originally were the equivalent of history books illustrating happiness, sadness, traditions and the stories of life. The technique is of reverse appliqué on several layers of co on fabric. This piece shows the influence of the outside world and the vibrancy of their living culture as it tells the story of Jesus calling the fishermen. 2 Check in on Facebook and let people know you were with us today!

7 CLOSING VOLUNTARY Hymn prelude on Lobe den Herren Craig Phillips We hope that you experience a strong sense of welcome and home this morning! We invite everyone to offer greetings and peace at the close of the service. We hope that you will make a special effort to reach out in friendship to those you have yet to meet. If you are new to the Kirk, we hope you will visit us at one of our Connect stations in the Narthex, Abbey Lounge, Welcome Center or Heritage Hall. Enjoy coffee and fellowship in Heritage Hall following the 9:15 a.m. service. About today s hymns Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty is based on Psalm 103 and Psalm 150. Its author, Joachim Neander, wrote sixty hymns. As a youth Neander lived a rather unruly existence even though he took the Calvinist faith seriously. Under the direction of his pastor, Theodore Under-Eyck, he amended his ways, completed his education and became his unordained assistant. I Love Thy Kingdom, Lord was wri en in 1800 by Timothy Dwight, president of Yale College (now University), and is his paraphrase of Psalm 137 which he titled, Love to the Church though when one compares his text to this psalm there seems initially to be li le to suggest that it is actually a paraphrase. Dwight was a Congregational minister and served as a chaplain during the American Revolution. Called as Partners in Christ s Service was wri en by Jane Parker Huber in 1981 for the Women s Breakfast at the General Assemblies of the United Presbyterian Church U. S. A. and the Presbyterian Church U. S. held concurrently in Houston, Texas. Huber was born of Presbyterian missionary parents in China. She was very active throughout her adult life in Presbyterian women s ministries and was a respected sage through her regular column, Ask Jane, in Horizons, the magazine for Presbyterian women. The tune Beecher is named after the great nineteenth century preacher Henry Ward Beecher. About today s choral music Commit Your Life to the Lord presents two separate texts; the first, Psalm 37: 5, and the second, a stanza of a hymn by Georg Neumark, translated by Catherine Winkworth. The first is initially sung by the full choir, and then continued by the altos, tenors and basses while the sopranos sing the second to the tune Wer nur den lieben Go (hymn 282). The Neumark text is the third stanza of hymn 282, a hymn of faith and trust in God through all things. Jesus Christ, the Apple Tree is a se ing of an anonymous text which first appeared in 1761 in a devotional magazine published in London. By 1784 the text had made its way to America, appearing in a hymnal published in New Hampshire. The text is an allusion to both the apple tree in Song of Solomon 2:3 which has been interpreted as a metaphor representing Christ, and to Jesus description of his life as a tree of life - Luke 13: as well as in Revelation 22: 1-2. K. Lee Sco is an American composer and presently is a member of the faculty of the University of Alabama. Dear Lord and Father of Mankind is a text by nineteenth century American Quaker John Greenleaf Whi ier. Whi ier was one of a group of New England poets known as the Fireside Poets, a group which included Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Family entertainment at this time centered around families gathering together around the hearth to read collectively poems and stories by these and other authors, hence the name Fireside Poets. These poems recounted and reflected upon historical and domestic themes, infused with messages of morality. The text of this anthem comes from a longer poem where Whi ier expresses his understandings of true Christian worship. 7
