2 ANOINTING OF THE SICK It s just for old people. You can really rceive it if you re really sick with something like cancer. You get it right before you die. If you think the Anointing of the Sick is just for the extremely old or the critically ill, or if you assume the only time you can receive it is at the moment of death, you aren t alone. Most Catholics still think of the Sacrament that same way. Although the sacrament began as a ritual of healing, over time the emphasis shifted to the forgiveness of sins on the deathbed, when such forgiveness would be the final preparation for heaven. The Vatican II Council returned the original meaning to the sacrament by emphasizing that it is not only for those who are at the point of death, but for anyone, regardless of age, can receive the Sacrament if his/her health is seriously impaired. It can also be administered before surgery and, contrary to many people s belief, it can be received more than once if the original illness gets worse or if another serious sickness is diagnosed. Today we are all aware that tensions, fear and anxiety about the future affect not only our mind but our body as well. These illnesses can be serious. They can move us to ask for the healing touch of Christ in the Sacrament of Anointing. Persons with the disease of alcoholism or persons suffering form other addictions can be anointed. So can those who suffer from various mental disorders. The anxiety before exploratory surgery to determine if cancer is present is a situation in which Christ s power can be invoked in the sacrament. In these cases the person does not have to wait until the illness is so grave that he or she is in the hospital or institutionalized to celebrate the sacrament. Sacraments, after all, are community celebrations. It is preferable to celebrate them in the context of family and parish even before going to the hospital. The sick person has a better opportunity to appreciate the prayers and symbols of the rite when in her or his customary community. Therefore, I invite all parishioners to bring members of your family, friends, relatives and neighbors for the celebration of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the sick. It will be administered at all the weekend Masses on OCTOBER 14 & 15, Come, let us pray for all the sick. CRAFTERS WANTED! God is pleased by sacrifices of that kind. -Hebrews 13:16 Dear Parish Family, This week and next, all parishioners will receive a personal letter from me asking for your increased support for Sacred Heart Parish Fall Drive. As we plan for the coming year, such an increase is necessary if we are to continue the services and programs that we offer. The support of Sacred Heart Parishioners is very generous and truly appreciated. However, every couple of years, inflation catches up with us, and we have to ask you to adjust your support level a bit. Please read the information included in the mailing that you will receive and respond as quickly as possible. Note that a response will be requested within two weeks. Please reflect carefully on your level of support and whether it is possible to offer a bit more to your Parish at this time. Please pray for the success of this Fall Drive - especially that the 60% of our Parish who do not regularly contribute will begin to accept their share of the responsibility for enabling Sacred Heart Parish to continue in its mission of worship, education and service. I know that there are many of our parishioners who care deeply about our Parish, and who will support it to the best of their ability. 5 PARISH INFORMATION CONFESSIONS: Saturdays 4:00 to 5:00pm EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: The first Thursday of each month from 1:00 to 7:00pm. BAPTISMS: Sunday Afternoon at 2:30pm on the First & Fourth Sunday of each month. Arrangements should be made by both parents in advance at the rectory with one of the priests. Both parents and sponsors must attend a meeting on the Third Monday at 8:00pm in the Rectory Sponsors must be practicing Catholics. MARRIAGES: Arrangements should be made at least four months in advance to assure time for the banns and the procurements of the necessary documents. It is the wish of the Church that all marriages be solemnized at a Nuptial Mass. FUNERALS: All arrangements should be made at the rectory by a member of the immediate family. The family is encouraged to receive Holy Communion at the Funeral Mass. SICK CALLS: Holy Communion will be brought to the sick upon request.
