FENWICK HIGH SCHOOL FIRST SEMESTER HONORS FIRST HONORS: SECOND HONORS: Sarah Blazer Ximena Alberttis Myles O Donnell Daniel Broderick Louis Salvino Brittney Woosley Congratulations... Sacred Heart is proud of you! WELCOMING MINISTRY BEGINS We are looking for greeters to help form our Welcoming Ministry. Greeters are needed for all the weekend Masses. They come to church about 15 minutes early and greet and welcome all people into church. For more information or to sign up, please call the Rectory at What a wonderful way to share our time and say yes to God! OPERATION RICE BOWL Operation Rice Bowl is Catholic Relief Services Lenten solidarity program that calls all participants to: PRAY with your families and faith communities; FAST in solidarity with those who are hungry; LEARN about the joys and challenges in the lives of our brothers and sisters around the world, and GIVE sacrificial contributions to those in need around the world. 75% of your contributions to Operation Rice Bowl go to Catholic Relief Services and support development projects that help families and communities improve their lives by increasing crop production, expanding their businesses to increase income, and improving sanitation and access to clean water. 25% of contributions remain in your diocese to fund local poverty and hunger alleviation efforts. Rice Bowl Boxes and Home Calendar Guides are available from the ushers and are in the last pew in church. The Spirit Drove Jesus out into the desert and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. -Mark 1:12 Now is the time for us to think about what things may tempt us and keep us in the desert. Do material possessions or time-consuming activities tempt us and prevent us from sharing time, talent and treasure with God? Dear God, help us resist temptation from material goods and recognize the difference between what we need and what we want. Amen ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL He has put His seal upon us and given the Spirit in our hearts. 2 Corinthians 1:22 The monthly pledge billings for the Archdiocesan Annual Catholic Appeal pledges have been mailed. It is very important that these pledges be paid so that our parish will reach our goal. Pledge Cards are still available in the racks at the entrances of church. II Jeff Cutrera and Christine Turso We welcome the following child into the Sacred Heart Family: ALYSSA GRACE GRAIG Daughter of James & Jennifer (Roth)

3 Always on Sunday. FORTY DAYS That is quite a long time to wait, to pray, to prepare. The first temptation is Can I cut it short? Of course, you can! But can you? Other temptations are: can I observe Lent only during Holy Week whatever that meant? Or if I observe forty days of Lent, will I be exempted from attending Sunday Mass for the rest of the year? Hey! I am in good health and have a good job. I am not thinking of death and resurrection right now. When it comes, surely I will go for forty days of fasting and prayer and I even have planned for a 30 day retreat. I am not in a hurry How can we, newly signed with ashes, heed Jesus words? How can we, also baptized and called beloved, living among the terrible beasts of our time, get people to believe in the Gospel? The answer, our agenda for Lent, is to be the Gospel, to be good news. How, in practice, do we do this? I am not going to suggest something complicated and obtuse. What I m going to suggest are THREE simple things that we can all try our hand at no matter whether we are children, teenagers, or adults. The FIRST is this. Every day of Lent, look to do the noble things no matter how small. You know what I mean. Do the better thing, the nice thing, the small but kindly thing. Keep a journal. Not out of pride, but just as a record, a reminder of the good deed you did that day: speaking an encouraging word, giving a compliment, holding the door open for someone, visiting the sick, calling a friend whatever. Do the daily noble deed. The SECOND is ALMS GIVING. That time-honored, Bible advised way of repentance. Two ideas pop up in my mind as I write this page. 1. Put an empty coffee can on the dinner table and each day put your loose change in it. At the end of Lent, give the money to the poor. 2. Operation Rice Bowl. Our parish is once again doing the Operation Rice Bowl campaign this year during Lent. Put all the money that you would spend for meals, drive through lunches, beverages etc. in the Rice Bowl box. Wait and see what a miracle you have performed feeding the hungry and sheltering the homeless. (Only a week s expenses will do.) The THIRD is PRAYER. The value of Lent, of these forty days when we join Jesus in a wilderness of introspection, of soul-searching, or self-denial. Food for the soul cannot be hastened in a microwave oven. Would you be so kind as to consider making the sacrifice of getting up and out to celebrate daily Mass during Lent. Because the people who celebrate Mass each day and the people who are homebound and shut-in are the real prayer power of the parish. Your prayer is most in need specially for Fr. Cosmo Militello, our beloved former pastor, Deacon Victor Colucci, for all our Senior citizens, for all who live alone, for all High School and college students, for all the divorced, for all the widows and widowers, for all young adults, for our teachers and students, for our civil authorities, for firefighters and police, for the unemployed and especially for all the sick and suffering, for Fr. Friedl and Fr. Peter, and many other intentions. I alone cannot pray, I need your help. Would those of you who are retired be willing to get up and get out to Mass every day or at least several times a week as a Lenten discipline? If Lent were shorter, say just a weekend, we could endure it better. But then we might more easily return to our crooked ways. No, God has a better plan. Do not seek a short cut through Lent s wilderness. These are forty days to clarify our sense of purpose, to find again our sense of calling in God s Kingdom, and to emerge afterward, like Jesus did, with an awareness of how crucial, how meaningful, how holy is the time of our lives. Fr. Victor Miranda. Linda Basil, Terry Barcal, Lois & Richard Bish, Evelyn Britton, Deacon Victor Colucci, Kimberly & Zach Enright, Marcella Excell, Jean Ganske, Bernard Hades, Rev. Cosmo Militello, Lucille Norwich, Lisa Rusectti, Vicki Stevens, Al Theodore, Andy Trentacosta, Mickey Zito, Sue Zupinski... AND ALL OF OUR HOMEBOUND PARISHIONERS. Heavenly Father, Look upon our brothers and sisters who are ill. In the Midst of illness and pain, may they be united with Christ, who heals both body and soul; may they know the consolation promised to those who suffer and be fully restored to health. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. *If you or one of your loved ones wishes to be included on the sick list, please call the Rectory at before the first of each month.
