4 February 28, 2016 Archdiocesan Shrine of The Divine Mercy Baltimore, MD What is a Jubilee Year? In the year 1300, Pope Boniface XIII called the very first Jubilee. Drawing from early Christian and Jewish traditions and understandings of Jubilee, the Jubilee was celebrated as a special time of joy and pardon. It is a year that emphasizes the Sacrament of Reconciliation, a sacrament vital for the forgiveness of sins. The special graces that we can receive this Jubilee are the same ones the faithful could receive over 700 years ago. VISIT THE HOLY DOORS DURING 24 HOURS FOR THE LORD 24 Hours for the Lord has been proclaimed by Pope Francis. The exposition of the Blessed Sacrament is to continue for 24 Hours. During the 24 Hours, Pope Francis has asked us to make visiting the Holy Doors a priority. Archbishop Lori has made the Holy Doors available in 8 locations throughout the Archdiocese and has requested that Holy Rosary parishioners visit the Holy Doors in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. For the graces that we will receive and in solidarity with the whole Church, Holy Rosary parishioners are encouraged to visit the Holy Doors during the 24 Hours for the Lord. The Basilica needs the help of Holy Rosary parishioners to please sign up for filling in the Adorations schedule. 5 February 28, 2016 Archdiocesan Shrine of The Divine Mercy Baltimore, MD LENTEN OBSERVANCE Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. Abstinence binds all persons who are at least 14 years old, unless prevented by poor health. On days of abstinence, the consumption of meat is not allowed. The Church strongly encourages the observance of Friday abstinence, however, failure to do so is not regarded as a sin. Lent is a penitential season and as such religious practices such as daily Mass, reception of the Sacrament of Penance, the devotion of the Stations of the Cross, works of charity and justice, and acts of self-denial are highly encouraged. Good Friday is day of fast & abstinence. Fasting binds people 18 years old up to 59 years old, unless prevented by poor health. On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one s own needs. Eating between meals is not allowed although fluids may be taken. The sign of the barren fig tree Jesus' parable of the barren fig tree illustrates his warning about the consequences of allowing sin and corruption to take root in our hearts and minds. Fig trees were a common and important source of food for the people of Palestine. A fig tree normally matured within three years, producing plentiful fruit. If it failed, it was cut down to make room for more healthy trees. A decaying fig tree and its bad fruit came to symbolize for the Jews the consequence of spiritual corruption caused by evil deeds and unrepentant sin. The unfruitful fig tree symbolized the outcome of Israel's indifference and lack of response to God's word of repentance and restoration. The prophets depicted the desolation and calamity of Israel's fall and ruin - due to her unfaithfulness to God - as a languishing fig tree (see Joel 1:7,12; Habbakuk 3:17; and Jeremiah 8:13). Jeremiah likened good and evil rulers and members of Israel with figs that were either good for eating or rotten and wasteful (Jeremiah 24:2-8). Jesus' parable depicts the patience of God, but it also contains a warning that we should not presume upon God's patience and mercy. God's judgment will come in due course - very soon or later.
