2 6th Sunday in Ordinary time Saint John Eudes February 15, 2015 Father Gérard s Corner Boundary-breaker meets boundary-breaker. After breaking Sabbath work boundaries by healing an afflicted man in the synagogue, then grasping the hand of a ritually unclean woman outside his family, God s boundary-breaker, Jesus, meets someone courageously breaking Leviticus boundaries by coming to Jesus for healing. Mark calls the man a leper rather than the more humane man afflicted with leprosy, because leprosy did define one as utterly and terminally marginalized. Fear of contamination separated lepers from work and worship, family and friends. Physical repulsion combined with popular theories of sexual transmission precluded relationships. One s sole interaction with society is the distant cry, Unclean, unclean! Until this leper, so emptied of personhood yet obviously full of faith, kneels down (worship), and begs (prayer), saying not, If you are able, like other petitioners, but If you wish. In the leper s mind, there is no doubt. Thus, in Jesus heart, no hesitation. Deeds before words. Stretching out his hand, as if bridging the infinite distance between observant Jew and despised outsider, Jesus eliminates ritual boundaries and social separation completely and forever. First deeds, Jesus touched him; then words, I do will it. Be made clean. Individual and community. In and through the living person of Jesus, a dead man walking, deemed untouchable, is put back in touch with the living community of God s people. But there s more. Jesus touch transformed not only the diseased individual, but the whole community. For the community itself was not whole until this community member was restored to wholeness and returned to the community. J.S. Paluch Fr. In order to facilitate the response from the Archdiocese, there is an on-line survey that enables Catholics to respond to a set of questions that the Vatican has proposed for reflection. A number of fine candidates were considered by the Committee, including those submitted by alumni and friends. More about the Alumnus of the Year can be found on the school website at CHILDREN S MINISTRY Second year Parents with children who are preparing for the celebration of a Sacrament are entering a special time in the life of your family. It is a time to reflect on the meaning of the Sacrament in your life and the ways in which your family life expresses the importance of these sacraments. Please make sure that you attend the mandatory retreats and events on time. RCIA encourages a change of heart and transformation of spirit while deepening our understanding of God. The journey begins with Inquiry, which meets every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Grill Hall Rm C. The journey incorporates all aspects of parish life: prayer, worship, Scripture study, community, and acts of charity. The RCIA process is open to adults and youth (grade 6 and up) in separate tracks. RCIA adults meet on Tuesday evenings throughout the year from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in Grill Hall. Our Parish Carnival happens again this year over the Memorial Day weekend. The Year 2 candidates for Confirmation are attending a retreat on February 27-March 1 at Circle V Ranch Camp in Santa Barbara. This retreat can be a transformational event for the teens as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Unfortunately some of our families are having financial difficulties and are unable to pay the registration fee of $ This fee covers the cost of the retreat center and transportation per person for the weekend. Your donation can help send a student who is unable to pay on this unforgettable experience. No donation is too small or too big! You can mail or drop off your donation to the parish office anytime. Please mark it Confirmation Retreat donation so it is credited towards the Confirmation candidates. Thank you so much for your generosity! Did you know that because of the outstanding generosity of parishioners, St. John Eudes collected $ in donations to the Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl program in 2014? Many, many thanks to all who participated last year! If you haven't participated in the Rice Bowl program before you might like to know it is an opportunity to pray, fast and learn about the needs of so many in our world and to give a sacrificial donation to those who have so little. The St. John Eudes community has been a tremendous contributor to this effort over the years and we hope that whether you are a faithful giver or a new benefactor, all will participate. Rice bowls will be handed after Masses on Ash Wednesday and again on the weekend of February 21/22. In addition you may want to stop by the table in the plaza after Masses on February 22 to learn more about Catholic Relief Services, the Rice Bowl program and more ways you can give during this season of penitential reflection and sacrifice.

Guíanos y ayúdanos a derribar las barreras que no nos permiten vivir en plena armonía con nuestro prójimo. Dígnate concedernos lo que pedimos, según tu santa voluntad. Por Jesucristo, nuestro Señor. Introducción a la Liturgia del Día Reunidos en este domingo previo al inicio de la Cuaresma escuchamos el desafío que nos hace Pablo para que todo lo que hagamos sea para la gloria de Dios. Él nos urge, además, a trabajar por el bien común en vez de para nuestro propio beneficio. Qué lecciones tan valiosas para nosotros y para nuestra nación! Tal vez hoy nuestra oración pueda ser para pedir que esa entrega desinteresada sea el fruto de este tiempo cuaresmal que se avecina. PREGUNTA DE LA SEMANA Cómo podrán mis prácticas cuaresmales responder al doble desafío de Jesús para que busque mi propia sanación y, una vez sanado por la gracia de Dios, convertirme en instrumento de sanación para los demás imitando la manera práctica en que Jesús demostraba su compasión? Dejemos hoy, pues, que las cenizas en nuestras frentes proclamen nuestra dependencia de Dios que nos creó y que nos invita a renovar nuestra vida esta Cuaresma con la oración, el ayuno y la limosna a fin de que en la Pascua podamos resucitar con el Señor Jesús a una vida nueva. Faith Formation & Enrichment Lenten Calendar Soup and Stations Every Friday during Lent, as has been our tradition for many years, we will gather at 6:00 p.m. for Soup in Grill Hall followed by Stations of the Cross in the Church. The following ministries will prepare the soup and reflection and lead the Stations of the Cross each week: February 20 February 27 March 6 March 13 March 20 March 27 RCIA and the Compassion Commission Spanish Ministry St. John Eudes School That Man Is You Filipino Ministry Children s Ministry, Youth Ministry, Living Stations team Service Saturday February 28 Lent is a time of sacrifice and reflection and this year in keeping with our call to give to the poor and needy, we will join together as community for a parish service day. Lenten Meditation Workshop March 7 A workshop for those who regularly practice meditation and those who are interested in learning how to meditate, this workshop will be led by Marco Svoboda. Beginning at 1:00 p.m. this workshop will be held in Grill Hall AB and will conclude at 2:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served at the end. The Passion of Christ Retreat with Dr. Bill Creasy March 28 As we enter Holy Week, Dr. Creasy will present a day-long parish retreat on "The Passion of Christ." This promises to be a profoundly spiritual day, as we follow Jesus from his entry in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to his crucifixion and burial on Good Friday. We will meet in the Church at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at 4:30 p.m. This event is free and lunch will be provided as well.
