2 Page 2 Jubilee Year of Mercy - Merciful Like the Father July 24, 2016 FR. GÉRARD S CORNER PRAYER FOR PRIESTS Saint John Paul II was a factory worker and clandestine seminarian in Krakow during the Nazi occupation, and then a Cardinal- Archbishop under Soviet persecution. Today in that place, the worldwide Church, visible in thousands of young people from around the globe, celebrates World Youth Day, whose theme coincides with that of Pope Francis s Jubilee: Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy (Matthew 5:7). In today s Gospel, Jesus unites prayer with mercy in the parable of the persistent friend. As he often is in Luke, Jesus was praying (Luke 11:1) when he responded to a disciple s request by teaching a prayer both reverently intimate Father, hallowed be your name (11:2) and persistently practical. Like Abraham in today s Genesis story, a pesky neighbor perseveres in asking for bread, for which Jesus had just taught the disciples to pray. The neighbor asks not for himself, but for a hungry friend. So, forced to choose between disturbing a peacefully sleeping friend or feeding a hungry one, this persistent good Samaritan, the persistent neighbor, teaches Jesus disciples just what to do. In teaching us the Lord s Prayer, therefore, Jesus schools us in discipleship s perfect balance: contemplative prayer and active charity, speaking to God reverently and intimately and unceasingly while serving our neighbor in persevering acts of practical mercy. In today s parable, Luke shows persevering prayer receiving the gift of bread, recalling Luke s unique expression for the Eucharist, the breaking of bread. How beautifully, therefore, Saint John Paul II s World Youth Day, Pope Francis s Jubilee Year of Mercy, and Jesus gospel unite to define Christian discipleship: unceasing communion with God and unconditional mercy toward our neighbor. 4 Page 4 Jubilee Year of Mercy - Merciful Like the Father July 24, 2016 Our parish of St. John Eudes plans to honor an outstanding volunteer to receive the St. John Eudes Medal this year. I am requesting that names of volunteers who by their lives have provided outstanding Catholic examples of service to others to be considered for the St. John Eudes Medal. I am requesting that each of the MINISTRY LEADERS, after consulting with ministry members, submit the name of a nominee for the award. Please provide a written explanation of the reason for selecting the nominee. The volunteer does not have to belong to the ministry making the nomination. I am also requesting that PARISHIONERS consider whom they would select and submit a letter of recommendation. In the selection process, please consider the traits of an outstanding volunteer as described below: Dependability: If you promise to do something do it. Reliability: Be on time and show up when you say you will. Commitment: See a project through completion. Flexibility: In thought and deed. Adapt to change. Team Player: Collaborate and work well with others. Also consider the ways in which the volunteer s efforts affect the life of St. John Eudes parish. Do their efforts? Have a positive effect on the spiritual health of the parish community. Improve the social services of the parish community. Enhance the appearance of the community. Enhance the liturgical life of the parish community. Reduce the cost of managing the church and school. Strengthen the relationship of the parish with the surrounding communities. Give newcomers the impression that St. John Eudes is a welcoming community. Any other characteristic that you consider creates a benefit to the parish. The Medal will be presented on the weekend of the St. John Eudes feast day. In previous years the medal was awarded to Mel Spratley, Jim & Dorothy Gergen, and Jim & Liz Carlin for their outstanding service to our community. Respectfully, Fr. Gérard August 20, 2016 (Saturday) 6:30 P.M. Grill Hall Tickets can be purchased in the parish office. 6 Page 6 Jubilee Year of Mercy - Merciful Like the Father July 24, 2016 WITH BURNING HEARTS WE PROCLAIM THE GOOD NEWS! It has been a few years since I was informed of the desire of some people and of the Filipino Council about Saint Lorenzo Ruiz being present in one way or another in our Church. I am also aware there is a strong devotion to the Infant Jesus of Prague. I have been praying to Saint John Eudes to assist me in being faithful to the Church and our bishop and allowing several parishioners to keep their devotion toward our Lady of Guadalupe, Saint John Eudes, the Holy Family and the infant Jesus. How do we make room for Saint Lorenzo, canonized by Saint Pope John Paul II, as the Philippines' first saint in 1987? San Lorenzo Ruiz is the patron saint of the Philippines as well as of overseas Filipino workers, Filipino youth, and Chinese Filipinos, among others. His feast day is on September 28, the day before every anniversary of his death, and celebrations are held every year in our region culminating by the Holy Eucharist presided over by Bishop Solis. Our turn will be in 2019! You know the mission statement of our parish. It was published in the front page of our bulletin last March and can be found on our Web page. Every ministry action we make, and that the pastoral team accepts or makes, has to be clearly connected and to derive directly from this mission statement. Saint Lorenzo, as well as Saint John Eudes our patron saint, can be good models by which we can be inspired. Our temple or our narthex cannot become a museum: that means adding a series of private devotions. The sacraments should be the core of our faith experience, and the Eucharist in particular. I do not want to hurt our Child Jesus devotees feelings who after mass touch and kiss the statue of the infant Jesus of Prague. This beautiful statue belongs to all the parish devotees and not to just a few. I decided to place this statue on a solid stand in a different spot in the narthex to offer him to our devotees. There is no question of preventing people from touching and kissing the statue. But being a private devotion, I will not permit a sanctuary to be developed around this wonderful statue. This is the reason I moved it from where it is now to be more visible and touchable. Now we had to find a place for Saint Lorenzo. The church has made him a saint and the patron saint of the Filipinos. I want to honor the church decision and place his statue where the infant Jesus is currently located. I would like to have a small committee to be responsible for the maintenance of his space. In Jesus and Mary, Go and proclaim the Gospel with a burning heart! Fr. Gérard Lecomte, CJM, Pastor

A study on online victimization found that approximately one in five children receive sexual solicitation from a stranger over the internet. Given today s reliance on online contact, imagine how much that number has grown over the last several years. Children who use the internet cannot be totally safe from dangers because the internet is open to all, but parents should monitor activity and should visit sites to ensure that their kids aren t being contacted by predators. Talk to your child about internet safety and appropriate vs. inappropriate communication. Vayan a Él y no tengan miedo!
