2 Page 2 JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY / Year of Consecrated Life January 31, 2016 FR. GÉRARD S CORNER Rave reviews greeted Jesus first hometown homily: All spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth (Luke 4:22). But Sunday s first reading always previews the day s Gospel. So a selection from Jeremiah usually signals trouble for Jesus! Today, God warns Jeremiah, They will fight against you. Sure enough, Jesus hometown congregation turns hostile in a hurry, when Jesus explains that God s kingdom, far from being theirs or anyone s personal possession, is open to people beyond Nazareth, indeed outside Israel s covenant altogether! Appealing to the mission of Israel s beloved prophets Elijah and Elisha, Jesus cites a widow from Sidon and Naaman from Syria, in other words, people from among Israel s most hated enemies, as forerunners of the countless outsiders Jesus will welcome into God s kingdom. Especially in the context of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Jesus challenges us in today s Gospel to broaden our horizons until our vision of God s kingdom matches Jesus vision: a kingdom open to all, every sinner a potential saint, each suffering stranger our neighbor. As Pope Francis teaches, rather than simply dividing people into the just and sinners, Jesus reveals the great gift of mercy that seeks sinners to offer them mercy and redemption (cf. Misericordiae Vultus: Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy). By continually going beyond the law, keeping company with those considered sinners and even sharing meals with them, Jesus demonstrated that God s mercy is the beating heart of the Gospel. So Jesus affirms that we, would-be disciples, must likewise place mercy at the center of our witnessing and relationships. J.S. Paluch Fr. Gerard Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament begins at the conclusion of the 8:30 a.m. Mass. Join us for an hour of tranquility in the company of the Lord. Benediction is at 6:00 p.m. QUESTION OF THE WEEK By summarizing Jesus teaching and example, Paul s Canticle of Love provides an examination of conscience for this Jubilee Year of Mercy: Is my love for others patient and kind, not jealous or pompous? Is it not selfseeking or quick-tempered? Does it not brood over injury or rejoice over wrongdoing? Does it rejoice with truth? Does it bear, believe, hope, and endure all things? BAPTISMS Spanish: 1 st Saturday of the month at 12:00 p.m. English: 3 rd Saturday of the month at 12:00 p.m. By appointment: Please call or visit the Parish Office. The motto Merciful Like the Father (taken from the Gospel of Luke, 6:36) serves as an invitation to follow the merciful example of the Father who asks us not to judge or condemn but to forgive and to give love and forgiveness without measure (cfr. Lk 6:37-38). The logo the work of Jesuit Father Marko I. Rupnik presents a small summa theologiae of the theme of mercy. In fact, it an image quite important to the early Church: that of the Son having taken upon his shoulders the lost soul demonstrating that it is the love of Christ that brings to completion the mystery of his incarnation culminating in redemption. The logo has been designed in such a way so as to express the profound way in which the Good Shepherd touches the flesh of humanity and does so with a love with the power to change one s life. One particular feature worthy of note is that while the Good Shepherd, in his great mercy, takes humanity upon himself, his eyes are merged with those of man. Christ sees with the eyes of Adam, and Adam with the eyes of Christ. Every person discovers in Christ, the new Adam, one s own humanity and the future that lies ahead, contemplating, in his gaze, the love of the Father. The scene is captured within the so called mandorla (the shape of an almond), a figure quite important in early and medieval iconography, for it calls to mind the two natures of Christ, divine and human. The three concentric ovals, with colors progressively lighter as we move outward, suggest the movement of Christ who carries humanity out of the night of sin and death. Conversely, the depth of the darker color suggests the impenetrability of the love of the Father who forgives all.

In 2016, as we celebrate the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Lent is a beautiful opportunity to focus on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. During these 40 days, we examine our own lives in an ongoing effort to be merciful, just as [the] Father is merciful. And CRS Rice Bowl is a tool to do just this. Through CRS Rice Bowl, we encounter those living in conditions of poverty around the world, and we have the opportunity to practice the corporal and spiritual works of mercy through our prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Participation in CRS Rice Bowl provides tangible assistance to our brothers and sisters in need. 75% of our gifts go to Catholic Relief Services to address global poverty and hunger. 25% percent remains in our archdiocese to support parish programs that address poverty and hunger. Last year, communities in the Archdiocese contributed over $100,000. CRS Rice Bowl materials include great resources for parishes, schools, religious education programs, RCIA programs, and other faith communities. Resources include the cardboard rice bowls in addition to lesson plans, videos, meatless recipes for Fridays in Lent, and more, all available in English and Spanish. Your kids may be sharing their lives with complete strangers, and parents should be aware of the sites they use, what they share, and who their friends are. One mobile app, Kik, is regarded as the most dangerous site for internet predators, because users can send messages to anyone with a cellphone, including young children. 6:30 a.m. Misa 8:30 a.m. Misa 12:15 p.m. Misa 7:30 p.m. Misa 7:30 p.m. Misa - en Español (en Grill Hall) RECongress es la reunión anual más grande de su tipo en el mundo.
