1 Gazette Sunday, October 1, Fillmore Avenue, Alexandria, VA NOMINATIONS FOR RESIDENTS COUNCIL In the Gazette dated September 3, 2017, the slate for the new nominees to the Residents Council was published. Although the slate was announced publicly four weeks ago, the By Laws also stipulate that additional nominations may be received for period set by the Council. That "additional period" set by the Council was until September 18, at noon. There were no additional names submitted to the Nominating Committee. Therefore, the six nominees are now nominated and confirmed to serve on the Residents Council. GOODWIN HOUSE 50 TH ANNIVERSARY Everyone well just about everyone loves a good party. Combine good friends, new acquaintances, delicious food and good beverages and you have the makings for a terrific party. In marriage, a 50 th anniversary is a great accomplishment and time for rejoicing and celebration. Goodwin House is celebrating its 50 th corporate anniversary on Saturday, October 14 Three of the six members are presently serving members on the Council. The three newly appointed members to the Council are Roger Brown, Rosie Robbins, and Julie Slavik. The new Residents Council will be seated at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, 7 November Congratulations to all who responded and will serve all of us on the Council! And, thanks to my committee members, John Anderson, ex officio member; Judy Davis; Bill Dols; and Frank Wade. Fitz Woodrow, Chair at the Mark Center Hilton. 2 FITNESS CORNER Spotlight on PLANK If you re not familiar with the exercise known as PLANK, you are missing out on an excellent core strengthener! The plank is an isometric position working your midsection, hips, and shoulders. Isometric means held position i.e. not moving. According to Dr. Glenn Wright, an Associate Professor of Exercise Science at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse, The plank does what abs are asked to domaintain the stability of the core muscles, supporting proper posture by safeguarding an erect position and strengthening the lower back. Plank on a chair: Place a chair against a wall or use the arm of a sofa or another piece of solid furniture which won t move. Hold onto the back of the chair with hands. Keep shoulders and hips aligned, pull abs in tight to spine and look down slightly. Hold seconds, maintaining position and breathing normally. Repeat 2 to 3 times each day. 3 LIFE ENRICHMENT UPDATE I am pleased to announce Kate Waters as the Interim Director of Life Enrichment beginning Monday, October 2 nd.. Kate is an ideal interim since she knows the residents, the staff, and the programs so well. She, like Pauline, is very creative and is being charged to continue programs for the enjoyment and benefit of residents. All the staff of Life Enrichment is truly valued and their work on behalf of GHA is greatly appreciated. Please join me in welcoming Kate to her new position within GHA. Harry W. Baldwin ST. Kate Waters NEW CHAPLAIN INTERN (#3 OF 4): MAX HAZELL Max is a native of Kentucky, alumni of Arizona State and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical (Prescott), an Army veteran, and a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) minister. He has been a youth minister, the pastor of a church, and a general church volunteer too many times to mention. When not on the job, he enjoys rowing on the Potomac with his team (Gray Knights), writing historical fiction, and chatting with anyone and everyone about the topics that make them happy. The result of an unlikely pairing between New York artists and Bell Telephone, this program features music legend John Cage in a seldom-seen performance, melding his signature style with the cutting-edge sounds of Bell's electronic equipment. The concert begins with Mozart's Kegelstadt Trio for clarinet, viola and piano. Allegedly composed during a game of skittles - an early version of bowling - this delightful piece is a chamber music favorite. Max Bruch composed his Eight Pieces for clarinet, viola and piano for his clarinetist son. The music is absolutely gorgeous and we guarantee you will love it. We complete the program with Stravinsky's Suite from The Soldier's Tale.
