1 the palm reporter September 2018 You can also get your FREE PALM Newsletter from our website, Voice-Controlled Technologies Targetted to Seniors As new voice recognition technologies emerge and the prices come down, this technology is receiving increased attention from the aging services industry. Voice-controlled technology holds great promise, in particular for older adults with physical limitations. In 2017, the Front Porch Center for Innovation and Wellbeing launched an Amazon Alexa Pilot Study at the Carlsbad by the Sea senior living community to examine the effectiveness and ease of use of Alexa, as well as its potential for offering older adults greater independence and social connection. In order to support participants, Front Porch also held twice monthly Alexa 101 workshops. Overall, all the older adults in the pilot study felt that Alexa made their life easier, and over 70% used it at least once a day. Over 70% of participants also reported feeling more connected to family, friends, and the community, with some choosing to use Alexa to call friends and family. In terms of Alexa s basic functions, participants reported using it for weather and temperature, alarms and timers, music, news, and to search for information. Participants were also given the option of trying smart home devices like smart plugs or thermostats to use with their Alexa, and all but one of these participants felt that these enhanced their enjoyment of Alexa. 2 MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR Well it s September and Fall is on its way. As I reflect on the past 9 months, I have been thinking about Aging in Place and Aging in Community as well as making our center one that welcomes intergenerational programming. BUILDING MOMENTUM The National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC) Has designated September as the month to highlight the theme of Senior Centers: Building Momentum as we celebrate National Senior Center Month! Isn t welcoming what it s all about. At PALM we take great pride in offering opportunities to get to know people who have different life experiences and interests. My experience recently with the new students in the Horizon s Leadership Institute made me realized that it s more important than ever to have some programming where young and old can thrive together. It also takes more than offering programs to get to know people. Staff and volunteers need to be culturally competent to understand how different cultures view aging and older adults, to help people make plans for their future that are consistent with their own traditions and that they feel respected and truly heard. The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin had a line in her famous empowerment song, R-E-S-P-E-C-T, find out what it means to me. We need to find out what it means to everyone. Staff, volunteers and participants need to be respectful of each other. Sometimes I am asked to intercede if someone has been rude to staff or if staff has been rude to a participant or when participants have disagreements. All of us have a responsibility to make PALM a community where we learn about each other, value our experiences and treat everyone with respect. At the PALM (Positive Aging in Lower Merion), through our programming, are hoping to change the perception of aging. We are making plans to bring innovative programs here to the PALM to change the perception of aging, and create important community resources for aging expertise. The NISC SAYS, Senior centers are the future of what aging can be. So we are asking all of our participants tell your family and friends about the PALM SENIOR CENTER and ask a friend to come visit the PALM. SEPTEMBER 20TH, 2018 at 12:30 Aging in Place Easy Living Now Learn more about developing a plan to preparing your home to make life easier now and a longer, healthier life in the future. Join interior designer Susan Rains, an Aging in Place design specialist, and Kelly Steyn, a Senior Real Estate Specialist to discuss this issue. SEPTEMBER 25TH: ALEXA, MY NEW FRIEND Some older adults have voice-controlled technology on their phones. Siri will try to answer questions. Voice-controlled technology holds great promise, for older adults. Today we will talk to ALEXA. It has the potential for offering older adults greater independence and social connection.

7 PALM SPOTLIGHT New Student Leaders PALM PARTICIPATES WITH HORIZON LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE FROM HAVERFORD COLLEGE On August 28. PALM represented by our Executive Director, Linda Collins, collaborated with the Horizons Leadership Institute. The Haverford Horizons Leadership Institute, or Horizons, is a leadership development program for students who have demonstrated leadership potential in high school. This invitation-only opportunity is designed for students who are first-generation, from underrepresented backgrounds, and/or Questbridge scholars. Horizons provides selected students the opportunity to gain a head start on their transition to college life and connect with classmates and student leaders. One of the goals is to develop relationships and connections in the Ardmore Community. Five leaders and their respective organizations were chosen to welcome the students and provide an introduction to volunteer opportunities. They are: Rev. Carolyn Cavaness, Pastor of Bethel AME Church Linda Collins, the Executive Director of PALM, the Center for Positive Aging in Ardmore Leann Ayers, Resident Director of A Better Chance House (ABC House) Janice Lion, Associate Director of the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship at Haverford Marcus Gaskins, co-owner of Gentleman's Quarters and Brianna Nero of Nero Photography, both of who coordinate SURGE Mentorship and the KEYS Project
