1 Gazette Sunday, May 21, Fillmore Avenue, Alexandria, VA ADMINISTRATIVE UPDATE Finishing touches are being made. With days before the Grand Opening of the new HCC, subcontractors are finishing up punch lists. New furniture has already been moved into the Small Homes. Staff is stocking the shelves with paper supplies and food items. The roadways of GHA have been repaved after months of hard use and heavy machinery going over and over the surfaces. The new HCC will be ready for all residents to tour on Thursday, May 25 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and for new resident occupants on Wednesday, June 7. It is going to be a wonderful time of celebration. Harry W. Baldwin DRIVERS REFRESHER COURSE Goodwin House will be hosting an eight-hour Drivers Refresher Course with AARP from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20 and Wednesday, June 21. The class is broken up into two sessions and you must attend both sessions to get credit. This course offers an opportunity to learn how to drive more efficiently and safely. It contains up-to-date information about changes over time in ourselves, our vehicles, and our roads in a highly interactive way. Boost safety awareness, refresh and improve driving skills, minimize crash risk, and the credit you get may lower your car insurance bills. The class will be held in the new Auditorium. Please sign up outside Life Enrichment. Matt Schwartz Gazette 5/21/2017 1
2 MAY BOOK REVIEW Bill Dols will review the poetry of Mary Oliver on Tuesday, May 23 at 3 p.m. in the Auditorium. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for her early poetry collection, American Primitive, Mary Oliver has published fourteen books of poetry and five books of essays. Her poems are quoted in everything from websites like Garrison Keillor s Writers Almanac to hymn books. Earthlight, a Quaker Magazine of Spiritual Ecology, has declared her an earth saint. Oliver s poetry explores a spiritual dimension in nature as well as the brokenness and grandeur of being human. Bill Dols, former rector of Immanuel Church on the Hill, will offer an introduction to Mary Oliver and her poetry. Copies of several of her poems will be available for reflection and discussion. As preface to her writing, Bill will suggest an approach to poetry focused upon experiences rather than intellectual meaning. All are invited to attend this book review. Ginna Mittauer FROM THE GROUNDS COMMITTEE If you walk the restored asphalt path in the north woods, you may have noticed a bare mulched area off to one side. The Grounds Committee has seeded this area with a wildflower mix including columbines, cornflowers and evening primroses. Until the plants are established, we are asking that both people and dogs leave this area undisturbed. Jennifer Hollings GUEST PREACHER: REV. MARCOS CASTILLO We welcome Marcos Castillo, GH Hospice & Palliative Care Chaplain in our Clinical Pastoral Education program, as the guest preacher Sunday, May 28, at both services of Holy Eucharist: 9:00 a.m. in the Memorial Chapel and 10:30 a.m. in the 2 nd floor Orchard Room. Chaplain Bruce will be presiding. Bruce Stewart WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST RESIDENT Please welcome Nancy Macklin in Apartment 857. Carol Opiela Gazette 5/21/2017 2

4 ALEXANDRIA WELCOMES TALL SHIP MAY El Galeón, an authentic replica of a 16th-century Spanish galleon, returns to the Alexandria City Marina from May 25 through May 29. Galleons, used by the Spanish crown for maritime expeditions from the 16th to 18th centuries, were fabled merchant vessels and warships. The 500-ton, 160-foot-long vessel has a 32-foot beam, and its four masts hold six sails that total nearly 11,000 square feet. Five of the six decks are open for tours. The ship will dock at the City Marina (0 Cameron St.). Tours are from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 5-12, and free for children under age 5. Advance tickets are available at at the Visitor Center at 221 King Street, or at the entrance of the vessel at the Alexandria Marina. Laura Lawson THE GREAT OAK The great oak that once stood in our garden lots will have new life in our new Health Care Center and on the grounds. Please stop and enjoy a rest on one of three original-design benches handcrafted from the oaks, located along the walking paths on the property. Created by artist Megan McSweeny, one bench will be located behind the new building and two will be located in the woods on the north side of the building. A wall sculpture carved from the crook of the old tree will grace the walkway between the Living Room and the new HCC lobby. Acclaimed sculptor and former GHBC Arts Coordinator Lynda Smith Bugge created the piece. The finished work reflects the journey of life from the past through the present into the future, a fitting theme for a work dedicated during this time of new life at GHA. Pauline Daniels Gazette 5/21/2017 4
5 NEW GALLERY WALK EXHIBIT AND LOCATION The Gallery Walk has officially relocated to the new Health Care Center. It now occupies the hallway facing the courtyard garden, and is nicely lit with natural light from the floor-to-ceiling windows, as well as interior lights. We are happy to introduce John H. Fitch Jr. as our first exhibiting artist in the new Gallery Walk space. John is a native of Alexandria and has been taking photographs for over thirty years. His primary focus is on the natural environment and discovering intimate details through macro photography, which explores small forms in large format. After recently traveling to China, Japan, France and other fascinating places, he has also rekindled his interest in travel photography. Many of his more recent photographs reflect this newfound awareness. His works have been selected for exhibition at Inova Mt. Vernon Hospital, Inova Alexandria Hospital, Alexandria City Hall, Goodwin House, The Alexandria Nature Center, the Art League of Alexandria Gallery in the Torpedo Factory, and the Del Ray Artisans Center. He is a member of the Art League of Alexandria and the Del Ray Artisans. John s exhibit of photographs will be on display from May 21 through July 1, During the opening of the Health Care Center, the new exhibit will be available for viewing according to the new building s existing access schedule. Kate Waters THE GREAT ARTISTS WORKSHOP UPDATE This series will go on hiatus starting this Tuesday, May 23 as we prepare for the move.
