This is a bus tour only. See all the beautiful lights on the streets of Alexandria! The bus will depart at 7:00 pm and return at 8:00 pm. There is no transportation cost. Sign up in the binder. Jennifer Bennett HOLIDAY POOL HOURS The pool will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year s Day. The pool will be open for regular hours all other days. Leslie LaPlace CHRISTMAS SERVICES There will be two services of Holy Eucharist for Christmas Eve, December 24. Everyone is welcome to attend and receive communion or a blessing. Since we are likely to have a number of visitors, please remember to wear your nametags as a gesture of hospitality. 3:00 pm - in the Auditorium 4:30 pm - Chaplain Bruce will make rounds in the Small Houses 7:00 pm - special musical prelude in Memorial Chapel 7:30 pm - service begins in Memorial Chapel (extra seating in the Living Room) Thursday, December 27, there will be NO mid-week services. 2 FREE COMBINED CLASSIC AND ROCK & ROLL HOLIDAY CHORALE CONCERTS Encore Creativity, the metropolitan areas largest senior choral community, will provide two exciting holiday concerts both are free. Tuesday, December 18 7:30 pm George Washington Masonic Temple Auditorium (101 Callahan Dr., Alexandria VA) The auditorium is large and has good acoustics. Parking is plentiful and free, as well. There are 160 singers. Wednesday, December 26 6:00 pm Kennedy Center in the Concert Hall. Kennedy charges for parking. There are 800 singers in this group. A number of members of GHA and GHBC are Encore Creativity singers. Note: There is no GHA transportation for these two concerts. DECEMBER READING CIRCLES Formerly Known as the Book Discussion Group There will be no Reading Circles this December. However, on the usual third Tuesday of the month, December 18, books for the January gathering can be picked up between 2 pm and 4 pm, outside the mailboxes. The January book will be Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsberg, with the discussion on Tuesday, January 15. Natalie Rooney DECEMBER SPIRITUAL LIFE PRESENTATIONS Advent Series 2018 Have you or someone you know had a tough year? Do you find the holidays stressful? The final portion of our Advent Series is Tidings of Comfort : service for those who struggle with the holidays. It includes scripture, hymns, prayers, candlelight, and silence. 3 OPERATION UPDATES WELCOME KIM HENRY 1. The Davis Construction trailer has been removed from the Original Building Ambulance Entrance. Please welcome Kim Henry to the Life Enrichment staff! She will be working primarily in providing an array of programming for Assisted Living residents while serving the entire community here at Goodwin House. She graduated from Eastern Michigan University in May of 2018 and received her certification in June as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. Please join the LE team in welcoming Kim to GHA! 2. The South Tower Façade Project is in its final phase. Completion date is projected to be first week in March, depending on weatherrelated delays. This phase ends the façade maintenance project. 3. The new Life Enrichment Office, Group EX Studio, and Social Work Office are now open. 4. Renovation of public bathrooms on the G-1 level near the Corporate Offices has been completed. 5. New wallpaper is being installed on the G-1 level. Installation of new flooring on G-1 begins on or about December 19, Completion of various EBI-related punch list items is ongoing. We will ensure Davis Construction does not vacate the property without having first completed all of their assigned punch list tasks. 7. Chapel reconstruction is finished. The first service was held on Thursday, December 13, and the first Sunday service on December 16. Our thanks to Reverend Bruce Stewart for his enormous contributions as we moved Chapel reconstruction to its conclusion. David P. 4 SIGNAGE THE PROMENADE A friendly reminder and request, please do not tape notices on the walls of our community. We are currently investigating an Echo Dot, which is a voice-controlled speaker that uses Alexa to answer questions as a means of communicating programs and events. Stay tuned! The definition for promenade is a walk taken for pleasure, display, or exercise; a stroll. A place where one takes a walk for leisurely pleasure, or for exercise. Many residents utilize our lower level of GHA for this exact reason, as well as to access the pool, beauty salon, credit union. or CVS. Barbara W. D Agostino We are in the process of improving the look of our lower level that we would like to refer to as The Promenade. The Promenade has new wall covering and next week will have new plank flooring installed. Please take a look at the improvements and let s work together on changing our vocabulary from G1 or the ground floor, to The Promenade! Barbara W. D Agostino NEW YEARS EVE PARTY CHRISTMAS ORPHANS TABLES The Monahan s, who have organized Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving orphans tables since 2016, plan to spend Christmas in Oregon and are seeking substitute hosts. This is easy and fun: Dining services handles reservations and host just show up to welcome people. The Kenny Wright Experience band will be performing and the dance floor will be put out for all of the fantastic dancers we have at GHA! 5 EVENING ENTERTAINMENT THOMAS PANDOLFI Tuesday, December 18 7:30 pm Auditorium AB Come and listen to American pianist Thomas Pandolfi, an exciting virtuoso who, with each passing season, is becoming more and more sought after by audiences worldwide, and showered with superlatives by critics for his passionate artistry and amazing technique. His remarkably warm and communicative tone uniquely "sings", projecting the poetry and emotion of whatever he plays Thomas truly touches the hearts of all who hear him. His virtuosity is breathtaking, and his sense of phrasing and command of style are marvelously convincing. Jennifer Bennett BABETTE'S CINEMATIC TASTE TREAT What better way to celebrate the holiday season than by sharing a sumptuous meal at least vicariously. Babette's Feast will be shown on Foreign Film Night, December 30, at 6:30 pm in the Auditorium. The lead is Stephane Audran, one of the most popular and respected French actresses at that time, The movie itself takes place in the late 19th century. Audran plays a French refugee from counter-revolutionary violence who is given refuge by the members of a strict religious order in a Danish community. Babette eventually is able to show her gratitude by preparing a lavish dinner (including some spirits) that are a revelation for the cloistered and austere order. One critic described the film as "edible art... a tour de force for the taste buds." Hollywood agreed and the film won an Oscar. As usual, there will be a brief discussion after the screening. 6 TEACHING COMPANY Every Wednesday 11:00 am Auditorium A King Arthur: History and Legend, the subject of our next series of Great Courses lectures prepared by the Teaching Company will begin on Wednesday, December 19, at the usual time of 11:00 AM in the Auditorium. This 24-lecture course will cover the full scope of the Arthurian tradition, from its beginnings in post-roman Britain, across the centuries, to its latest incarnations in our own times, up to and including stories as they were transformed in 20th- and 21stcentury literature, art, and film. Each lecture is 30 minutes long, and GHA shows two lectures at each session. For those who miss a Wednesday session, Chanel 972 shows a replay the next day on Thursday at 11:00 am. Bob Nichols GIFT BOXES RESCHEDULED! Chaplain Bruce will be sharing the art of transforming greeting cards into miniature gift boxes. He showed examples at the Chanukah & St. Nicholas program. Bring half a dozen greeting cards (new or used, the larger the better) to the Arts Center on Monday, December 17 at 4:00 pm Other supplies will be provided. You may bring your own ruler, pencil, and scissors, if you prefer them. Finally, "Mickey & Minnie's Gift Of The Magi" recreate the classic tale of ironic Christmas selflessness. The stories are linked together by narration by Kelsey Grammer.
