2 Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church 1st Eucharist Workshop March 6 7:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 7:00 PM Our children preparing for First Communion recently attended their workshop where they (and their parents) participated in creative expression and music activities together. Please keep these 52 children and their families in your prayers as they continue their preparation for First Communion in late April. We extend a very special thanks to the A. G. Glass & Mirror Company. For nearly forty years A. G. Glass & Mirror has provided the glass that becomes one of our most-loved First Communion keepsakes, the stained glass chalice. Louisville, KY March 3 8th Sunday of Ordinary Time 1st Reading: Sirach 27:4 7 2nd Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:54 58 Gospel: Luke 6:36 45 Jesus said, How can you say to your neighbor, Friend, let me take out the speck in your eye, when you yourself do not see the log in your own eye? Explain. Welcome! We recently welcomed Tanya Aebersold into full communion of the Catholic faith. Are you interested in learning more about our faith? We offer RCIA instruction year-round, and we welcome all inquirers! Contact Doug Wolz for more details, dougw@ourlourdes.org, or call the Parish Office. 3 Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time March 3, 2019
4 Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Louisville, KY Gospel Reflection The readings today exhort us Christian disciples to form ourselves, mind and heart, in imitation of Christ so we can better reflect His goodness in our daily lives. The reading from Sirach offers timeless counsel: the fruit of a tree shows the care it has had: so too does one s speech disclose the bent of one s mind. Praise no one before he speaks. Jesus uses the very same analogy in the Gospel: A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. Everything we have is a gift from God to use for His honor and glory. This includes the gift of speech, including all forms of modern-day communication: , text, Twitter, Facebook and the rest. What comes forth from our mouths, or keyboard, or phone, is a reflection of what is in our minds and hearts. In the same Gospel passage, Jesus reminds us, No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher. The more time we spend with Jesus, our teacher, through regular prayer and a strong sacramental life, the more we will become like Him. Then all that we do and say (and tweet and post) will bring others closer to Him. This is the life s work of the Christian steward. It is privileged work indeed. Summarization from Catholic Stewardship Consultants, Inc Forget Me Not Flower Ministry Shamrocks for St. Patrick s Day! Please take one flower and deliver it to the person indicated on the card on St. Patrick s Day weekend. Don t forget to wear GREEN! If it s ok with the person you visit, take a selfie together and send it to Joni, jonir@ourlourdes.org. Please make sure to include name of person you visited. Archbishop s Letter Adults are encouraged to read the letter from Archbishop Kurtz, as well as the report regarding sexual abuse issued February 8. Find it under the Publications tab on the parish website, and click on Links. The report is at the top of the page. VBS Planning Put your PAWS UP & join us as a volunteer at ROAR VBS! Our next VBS Planning meeting is Thursday, March 7 at 7:00 PM in the Professional Team Room across from the school office. We will match your talents with our needs. Please contact Beth Freeman for details and questions, bethf@ourlourdes.org. The fruit of a tree shows the care it has had; so too does a man s speech disclose the bent of his mind. Praise no man before he speaks, for it is then that men are tested. ~Sirach 27:6 7 Conversations with Archbishop Kurtz Chancellor Dr. Brian Reynolds and Archbishop Kurtz discuss Pope Francis Lenten message, and a new video series, Work of the People: The Catholic Mass, produced by the Archdiocese to promote full, conscious, and active participation in the Mass. Archbishop also welcomes Fr. Wayne Jenkins to talk about the role of the pastor and how it has changed. Conversations airs on the Faith Channel Tues and Fri at 7:00 PM, Wed at 10:00 AM, and Sat at 4:00 PM; or download for no charge through itunes; or view online at Disposal of Palms Do you have palms leftover from Palm Sunday last year? Once an object is blessed, it is considered to be in the service of God and should be treated with respect. To dispose of Holy palm that is no longer in use, bury it outdoors. Burning the palm and spreading the ashes outside is also acceptable. Spring Ahead Daylight Savings Time Don t forget to spring forward and move your clocks ahead one hour before going to bed on Saturday, March 9. We don t want you to miss Mass or Hospitality Sunday on March 10! Stewardship Reflection Therefore, my beloved brothers, be firm, steadfast, always fully devoted to the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. ~1 Corinthians 15:58 Where we focus our labor, our efforts, is often a reflection of our priorities. Is the focus rooted in serving the Lord, or will that labor indeed be in vain when one day the Lord asks how we shared the blessings placed in our lives. Based on reflections prepared by Rev. Thomas Gentile and the Office of Mission Advancement Scholarship Tax Credit From the Catholic Conference of Kentucky Kentucky House Bill 205 would create a Scholarship Tax Credit program that would make K 12 tuition at a non-public school more affordable for thousands of Kentucky families. Please take a couple of minutes to call your state representative and leave a message in support of House Bill 205. The phone number is If you don t know your representative, the operator will help get the message to the right person.
