2 OUR LADY of LOURDES CHURCH LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY Music During Lent The Liturgical Season of Lent requires a different approach to our worship. An image of Lent that I grew up with was imagining this time as a journey through the desert. We take only what we need and begin our walk. During Lent, rather than our usual gathering song, we will begin mass with silence. It s a great way to recognize that we have entered a new season within the Church year, which should inspire a different focus on our prayer and reflection. During Lent, a common practice is to abstain, or give up something that we enjoy as a means of reminding us of this season. Not using a gathering song, beginning liturgy in silence, is the same idea...so when song returns with great exuberance on Easter Sunday, we'll experience a renewed joy for our celebration and all that we have. Lent is a simple, solemn and significant time! That sounds rather serious, but at the same time, we should experience a sense of joy in our prayer during this season. We give things up, not to suffer, but to remind us of our process: what is missing in my spiritual life that I d like to change? Is my relationship with Jesus, and others, how I want it to be? Taking time to renew ourselves, to have a change of heart, and to envision how we would like to live in better relationship with Jesus and others is joyful...even while solemn. We should not confuse the word solemn with somber. Somber means dismal, gloomy and dark...a perfect word for our weather on most days! Solemn means formal, distinguished, proper and even awe-inspiring. It means using our time intentionally to repair, rebuild and refocus. So as we continue our journey through our Lenten desert let s remember: We rise again from ashes to create ourselves anew! (Ashes, BB#116) ~Gregory Youth led Liturgy Our next celebration is March 18 at 11:30 AM. Young people interested in serving as lectors, communion ministers, gift bearers, usher/greeters, choir members or musicians are encouraged to contact Bill Ash, billa@ourlourdes.org or Gregory DuPont, gregoryd@ourlourdes.org. Gift Bearers A sign up sheet will be on the Ministry Bulletin Board for the masses each month. If you would like to present the gifts during mass, please sign up on this sheet. Check in with the Sacristan when you arrive for mass to see if the scheduled family has arrived. Homebound Ministry Communion to Homebound This ministry offers prayer and support, as well as Eucharist, to parishioners who are unable to attend mass. If you are aware of a parishioner presently unable to attend mass, and would like to take advantage of this wonderful ministry, please contact George Brinkhaus at Rest in Peace Please keep in your prayers those who have died and their families, especially: Billy Sanders, father of Generose Hayes March 4 Third Sunday of Lent 1 st Reading: Exodus 20: nd Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:22 25 Gospel: John 2:13 25 For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles. 3 Mulch Sales Boy Scout Troop 325 is taking orders now for mulch in black, brown, or cypress blend, $4 per bag, with free delivery in St. Matthews. Delivery is scheduled for April To place an order, please contact Paul Stratman, or call/text at Orders will be taken through April 1. Happy Anniversary A blessing for Dave and Ann Russo, who will celebrate the 40th anniversary of their marriage on March 4. Almighty and eternal God, look with favor on Dave and Ann, whom you have united in marriage, as they ask for your help and the protection of the Virgin Mary. They pray that in good times and in bad that they will grow in love for each other; that they will resolve to be of one heart in the bond of peace. Lord, in their struggles let them rejoice that you are near to help them; in their needs let them know that you are there to rescue them; in their joys let them see that you are the source and completion of every happiness. Through Christ our Lord, Amen. May the God of Hope fill us with every joy in believing. May the peace of Christ abound in our hearts. May the Holy Spirit enrich us with his gifts, now and for ever. Amen. The Ten Commandments Our First Reading from the Old Testament Book of Exodus presents the Ten Commandments, as God gave them to Moses. The Commandments also appear in the Book of Deuteronomy (Chapter 5; verses 6-21). The Commandments are reaffirmed in the New Testament by Jesus Himself and especially in the Gospel of John. The Ten Commandments are also called the Decalogue, which means literally ten words. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (#2056) God revealed these ten words to His people on the holy mountain. They were written with the finger of God. They are pre-eminently the words of God. At another point the Catechism fortifies the Commandments by saying, from generation to generation the deposit of moral teaching has been handed on. Along with the Creed and the Our Father, the basis for catechesis has traditionally been the Decalogue, which sets out the principles of moral life valid for all people. (#2033) The Commandments are considered essential for spiritual good health and growth. They serve as the basis for Catholic social justice. A review of the Ten Commandments is a common type of examination of conscience before receiving the sacrament of Penance. As Lent draws to a close, it is important for each of us to go to confession and receive the sacrament of Penance. As part of that we may wish to look at our lives and how we live them through the holy words of the Ten Commandments. Summarization from the reflections of Catholic Stewardship Consultants Commitment Cards Thanks to all who have returned 2018 Commitment Cards. 4 OUR LADY of LOURDES CHURCH LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY Sopa de Queso Cheese Soup encounter Lent Photo by Oscar Leiva/Silverlight for Catholic Relief Services Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl CRS Rice Bowl is Catholic Relief Services Lenten program for families and faith communities in the United States who want to put their faith into action. Through CRS Rice Bowl, participants are invited to hear stories about their brothers and sisters in need around the world, and devote their Lenten prayers, fasting and alms to change the lives of those who suffer in poverty. In 2017, nearly 14,000 Catholic parishes and schools across the U.S. participated in CRS Rice Bowl. Visit crsricebowl.org to learn about Nicaragua and Cesia, the young woman pictured above. Cesia joined YouthBuild, a CRS program that teaches business and life skills. She now runs a produce market in her community and leads workshops for other young people. The recipe at right for Sopa de Queso comes from Nicaragua give it try this Lent! Rice Bowl By the Numbers In its first 40 years, more than $250 million has been given through CRS Rice Bowl to support programs that prevent hunger and poverty around the world. Of that, $62.5 million went to programs in the U.S. through local dioceses and $187.5 million went to CRS programs overseas. Each year CRS Rice Bowl funds are directed to between 40 and 45 countries where CRS operates humanitarian response and development programs. Our Catholic community in the United States does something amazing each Lent. We come together to practice prayer, fasting and almsgiving and by doing so we help lift families and communities out of poverty and put them on a path toward resilience, prosperity and stability. That s the CRS Rice Bowl effect. Change a life this Lent! Water 1 large onion, sliced 2 green peppers, sliced 2 tomatoes, sliced 3 cloves garlic, smashed 1 bunch fresh mint 4 cups whole milk 2 1/2 cups Maseca* Pinch of salt 3 cups queso fresco or farmer s cheese, grated 1 1/2 T achiote paste** 1 T olive oil 1 cup vegetable oil (for frying) Hot cooked rice (for serving) Bring 4 cups water to a boil; add onion, peppers, tomatoes, garlic, and mint. Simmer until cooked. Meanwhile, combine Maseca and 2 cups water, kneading to form a dough. Combine the olive oil and achiote paste; then add to the dough, along with cheese and salt. Remove 1 cup of the dough mixture to a bowl and stir in 1/2 cup of water. Set remaining dough aside. Heat milk in a separate pan. Discard mint and 1/2 the vegetables from the first pot. Add the dough/water mixture and warmed milk to the remaining vegetables; stir and remove from the heat. For fritters: pat remaining dough into palm-sized rounds. Fry in hot oil until brown and crisp. To serve: ladle soup into bowls; add a scoop of rice and a fritter. Garnish with fresh mint. Serves 6. *Maseca is a corn flour and is available at large groceries. **Achiote paste substitution: 1 1/2 T paprika, 1 T vinegar, 3/4 t oregano, 1/2 t cumin, and 1 garlic clove minced.

5 A Guide to Lent for Catholic Families As parents of young children, our minds are constantly in motion...our lives are busy, but can we slow down to hear what God is leading us to do? Can we simplify our lives enough to appreciate the God given beauty of the planet earth? We hope you will enjoy these activities and bringing your family together during this Lenten Season. Did you know? Ashes are a biblical symbol of mourning and penance. They also symbolize death and so remind us of our mortality. The priest will wear specific vestment colors during the Lent Season. Some of the colors include: White (purity, innocence, rejoicing, and light) is worn on Holy Thursday, Easter Sunday, and during the Easter Season. Violet (sorrow and penance) is worn during the Lent Season, on Passion Masses, and at the blessing of ashes. The three traditional pillars of Lenten observance are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. The tradition of the Easter lily has biblical roots. Tradition holds that the white lilies sprung up where drops of Christ s sweat fell to the ground in his final hours of sorrow and deep distress.
