2 Page 2 Saint John the Evangelist March 20, 2016 Jesus did not come to do away with suffering or remove it. He came to fill it with his presence!... Holy Week is not to be missed! The great Easter Triduum begins with the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday (24) and concludes at sunset on Easter Sunday (27). It is one big festival, and the highlight of the liturgical year!... On Holy Thursday (24), we celebrate the Mass of the Lord s Supper at 7:00pm, with the presentation of the Holy Oils and the Washing of the Feet.... On Good Friday (25), we celebrate the Lord s Passion at 5:00pm and 7:00pm (in Spanish). Each celebration includes the proclamation of the Passion of the Lord, the Veneration of the Cross, and the celebration of Holy Communion. We are encouraged to observe both fast and abstinence!... Throughout the world, on Good Friday (25), a special collection is taken up to help support the Christian communities and maintain shrines in the Holy Land of our Lord s birth, agony, death and resurrection. Please plan to give generously.... On Holy Saturday (26), our Easter Vigil begins at 8:00pm, and will include the celebration of Light, the great Easter proclamation, the telling of the history of salvation, the baptism and initiation of our catechumens, and the celebration of the Eucharist!... Next weekend, invite a neighbor or friend to our Easter Sunday (27) celebrations at 7:30am, 9:00am, 10:30am, 12:00pm (Spanish) and 5:00pm!... Each Sunday our 9:00am Mass is streamed live to the Internet, and on Easter Sunday (27) both the 9:00am and 10:30am Masses will be streamed live. You can celebrate with us at Our Men s Fellowship are sponsoring a showing of the movie The Passion of the Christ, a film by Mel Gibson, on Wednesday (23), at 6:30pm, in the Hall. The movie is for adults and runs for two hours. Light fare and refreshments will be at hand.... What a great Confirmation Retreat last weekend (13)! Isaac Deken, together with 43 leaders, led our 101 youth on a great experience! Spirit!... Be sure to make a pledge to our Annual Catholic Appeal which assists the extensive ministry of our Diocese. Please make a meaningful pledge that you will strive to meet over the next 8 months. To date, 225 families have responded. Pledge today! Our Religious Education children travel the Stations of the Cross this Monday (21) at 4:15pm and 6:30pm! All for us!... What a great evening it was! That s our Mad Hatter Ball Auction Dinner Dance on Saturday (12), at Sheraton, Carlsbad. A mighty Thank You to the many that put it all together. Our great sponsors truly deserve our patronage and support. Plan to be part of it next year! A really fun night!... John and Joann Orlando are ever with us, and have been parishioners since John served in our Food Pantry for many years. He went Home to the Lord, after a short illness, on Thursday (3). May he rest in peace. Lenten Penance Services are celebrated this Monday (21) at Saint Mark, San Marcos, at 6:30pm, and on Tuesday (22) at Saint Peter, Fallbrook, at 6:00pm. Forgiveness!... Our Annual Lenten Appeal lends support to the great work of Catholic Relief Services, and the Church in South America and Africa, and to our neighboring dioceses of Mexicali and Tijuana. Please respond as best you can!... What a great thing! Mary Goulet and the ladies of our Park and Pray Women s Prayer Group prepared special Saint Patrick Day gift packets for our homebound parishioners! Our special Ministers of the Eucharist to the Sick were escorted by giddy little leprecauns and green shamrocks! Our ladies gather after 8:00am Mass each Wednesday.... 5 Pagina 5 Saint John the Evangelist Marzo 20, 2016 DOMINGO DE RAMOS De la Pasión del Señor PASIÓN La palabra pasión conlleva un profundo y determinado compromiso. Pero es interesante que también tiene relación a la pasividad. La persona profundamente apasionada del relato evangélico de Lucas es Jesús. Parece pasivo pero no lo es. Está totalmente consciente de sí mismo y totalmente presente al día que comienza el jueves por la noche en su última cena con los apóstoles y termina con su entierro antes de la puesta del sol el día siguiente. Entonces le sigue el largo silencio del sábado. El relato de la pasión se lee entero y sin pausa el Domingo de Ramos en la Pasión. Esta historia, que se encuentra en cada uno de los evangelios, no cambia. Somos nosotros los que cambiamos. Cada año, nos presentamos con otro año de historia para escuchar y hacerle caso a esta historia que tanta falta nos hace. La vida nos traquetea y de nuevo volvemos a los relatos de la Pasión para aprender a seguirle. BENDITO EL QUE VIENE EN EL NOMBRE DEL SEÑOR La liturgia oficial de la Iglesia para el Domingo de Ramos es algo paradójica. E n t r a m o s proclamando Hosannas con cantos y vítores y al poco tiempo estamos gritando: crucifícalo, crucifícalo! Según el rito la lectura del Evangelio y la consagración de la Eucaristía se hacen dentro del templo, pero se comienza afuera del templo con la bendición de los ramos. En Estados Unidos y otros países latinoamericanos se usan palmas en lugar de ramos. En Europa, normalmente, se usan ramos de olivos. Últimamente en Colombia para proteger la palma de cera del Quindío, se les ha pedido a los fieles que usen ramitas de plantas o ramos de flores. Estoy de acuerdo hay que proteger el ambiente, pero admito que prefiero las palmas, ya que es difícil poner un ramo de olivo o de flores detrás de una imagen sagrada colgada en la pared. Esta es una costumbre latina que nos recuerda que los hosannas y el crucifícalo del domingo de ramos nos acompañan todos los días del año. 6 Page 6 Saint John the Evangelist March 20, 2016 What day is today? Ask most folks strolling home from church today and they will reply Palm Sunday. Not too long ago, today was known as the Second Sunday of the Passion, and in 1970 it was renamed Passion Sunday. This made some sense, since the procession recalling Christ s entry into Jerusalem is usually only celebrated once in a parish on this day, but the Passion is proclaimed solemnly at every liturgy. In its most recent incarnation, the name for this day includes both aspects of the celebration: Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord. In the United States today, most worshipers are provided with palm branches, although in northern Europe pussy willows are favored, and in Italy olive branches are the norm. When our calendar was reformed, the entire structure of the week to come was revised even as the traditional name, Holy Week, was retained. The major benefit of the restructuring of our calendar is to help us see that the Triduum, the great three days beginning at sunset this Thursday and extending until sunset on Easter Sunday, is at the heart of the Christian life. Today, as you ponder the Lord s Passion, you may consider your response to so great a gift. Centuries ago, good Christians vowed to go on pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
