1 SAINT JAMES CHURCH A Roman Catholic Stewardship Community of Christ s Disciples March 18th, 2018 Fifth Sunday of Lent Our Saint James Logo for Our 65th Anniversary explained The overall quadrant of the Logo portrays our Church that is connected as one family with a variety of persons and charisms shown through the different liturgical colors (white, greens, gold, red, violet). The symbols from top to bottom describe essentially our motto written on top and at the bottom of the logo: Purple Cross Dome is the mark of true discipleship for every believer, carrying the cross in community, Blue Star represents the Word Becoming Flesh through Mary whose color is blue. The Babe standing over the book and surrounded by two persons represents Christ who is at the Center of our lives and holds us together. The Book/Word of God, in the form of a shell, depicts our Patron, Saint James. All rights reserved. Stewardship I will be their God and they shall be my people. - JEREMIAH 31:33 What does it mean to be God s people? It means we recognize that everything we have and everything we are belongs to God. We aren t owners of anything, we are merely stewards of the gi s God has given us. It means we are willing to use our gi s and our lives to care for our neighbors and the world, just as God cares for us. SAVED BY GOD S LOVE Because the people broke the old covenant, God promised a new covenant, not in the blood of oxen and other animals, but in the blood of the Son, Jesus Christ. This new covenant, foreseen from afar by Jeremiah and the prophets, was not to be engraved on stone, or wri en on paper, but carved on our hearts, so that we might know God in mately. Not by keeping many laws are we to be saved, but by the love of God, living and real in our hearts through the sacrifice of Christ. Our Eucharist is the pledge of that indwelling of Christ, and of our response of praise and thanksgiving to God for the mercy, love, and kindness shown to us in forgiving our sins and cleansing our hearts of everything evil. Tal vez se siente como si algo te está deteniendo: falta de educación o de fondos, decisiones pasadas o antiguas heridas, relaciones complicadas o demasiadas responsabilidades. Pero en la visíon/conprensíon de nuestra vida cristiana, solo dos cosas impiden nuestra libertad: el pecado y la muerte. Si pudiésemos superar esos dos, caminaríamos hacia la perfecta libertad y elegría de vivir. La buena noticia es que podemos! En la liturgía de hoy, celebramos cómo el poder mortífero del mal cede ante los sacramentos que dan la vida que hacen posible que nos liberemos de todo episodio de pecado y de muerte. Maybe it feels like something s holding you back from living a sincere Christian life: lack of education or funds, past decisions or old wounds, complicated relationships or too many responsibilities. But in the big picture, according to our Christian perspective, only two things impede our liberty and joy of living: sin and death. If we could get beyond those two, we walk into perfect freedom and joy. The good news is, we can! In today s liturgy and all throughout the season of Lent, we celebrate how the death-dealing power of evil/ death gives way to the life-giving sacraments that make it possible for us to walk free of every episode of sin and death. God has given us so much and God s generosity to us, especially the gift of His Only Son, inspires us to be generous and to share with others from the bounty of God s gifts we have received.
