Jeff Walker Dear Friends in Christ, Evil is real. And so is Satan. We only have to turn on our televisions, open our newspapers, or take a glance at Twitter or Facebook to see that evil is indeed all too real. Saint Pope Paul VI, who was canonized today in Rome, ominously warned in 1972 that he had the sensation that from some fissure the smoke of Satan has entered the temple of God. The current situation of the Church seems to indicate that he was not wrong. As I read the recent Grand Jury report from Pennsylvania, I couldn t help but think of that quote as I noticed the intense evil of these sins and crimes that were committed. I am not alone in reading that report and sensing something truly diabolical at work. St. Paul reminds us that our battle is not merely against flesh and blood, but against fallen angels and evils spirits (cf. Eph 6:12). The good news is that our God is infinitely more powerful than these fallen angels and evils spirits. Evil and darkness pale in comparison to the goodness and love of almighty God. St. Michael the Archangel is known from Holy Scripture and Tradition as protector and defender of all that is good and holy. Indeed, in the Book of Revelation, it is St. Michael the Archangel who leads God s armies to final victory over the forces of evil. Bishop Thomas has asked that the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel be prayed at the conclusion of all Masses in the diocese in order to combat intentionally the evil of the sexual abuse scandal in the Church. Praying this prayer to St. Michael was the common practice of the Church throughout the world from 1886, when this particular prayer was composed by Pope Leo XIII, until Next week, we will begin this practice again after the final blessing at all of our Masses in Sandusky. Though the school has been praying this prayer according to one translation after all school Masses, and Holy Angels has been using another after their weekday Masses, we will use the translation below which will be placed in the back of all the hymnals. Let us continue, by action and prayer, to promote the healing of victims, the reform of the hierarchy and the clergy, and the purification and holiness of the Church. As Catholics this is the fundamental social justice issue without life, without respecting who we are as persons made in the image and likeness of God (at every stage), there can be no social justice. If life and the dignity of the human person is disrespected, then so, too, will be the family, the rights and liberties of all people, the poor, the vulnerable, and workers. Indeed, even our environment, God s creation, our common home will not be respected if we do not respect human life. 9 REMINDER SAINT MARY S CHURCH PEW AND FLOOR REFINISHING POSSIBLE REORGANIZATION OF PEWS Just as a reminder, a couple of weeks ago I provided the following information regarding the pew and floor refinishing project at Saint Mary s Church, which will begin shortly after the New Year. Since some might have missed this information, I want to be certain that everyone receives it again. Over the past three years a variety of improvements have been completed at Saint Mary s as part of the Our Faith, Our Future, Our Time Capital Campaign. Two more projects are slated to begin shortly after the beginning of the New Year. In late June 2018, Father Steinbauer, along with Saint Mary s Finance Council, selected Eisenhower Church Furnishings (Huron, Ohio) to coordinate the refinishing of the pews in the church. All of the pews will be removed during the first week of January. They will be stripped, sanded, and stained to match the darker wood found in the sanctuary and the baptistery, and returned approximately 12 weeks later just in time to celebrate Holy Week and Easter. During this time, we will use rented, padded chairs for the Masses. With the pews out of the church, it also becomes a good time to strip, hone, repair, and refinish the floor in the nave and vestibule of the church. This will take place shortly before the pews are returned. Please note that this will likely require that the location of Mass be temporarily moved to a different location. Finally, in advance of the pews being removed, we want to make certain that when they are returned, we configure them according to the wishes of our parishioners. You ll notice that the pews on the far left and right sides of the church do not align with the side doors coming from the front entrance. The refinishing project allows us to decide if we want to return the pews to their current configuration, or to make a change. To that end, we will change several pews on both sides, which started earlier this month. I encourage you to try them out when you come to Mass. In mid-november, we will vote to see which configuration parishioners like best; this gives us a number of weeks to test them out and to truly discover which configuration we like best. When the pews are returned in April, we will permanently configure them according to how people vote in November. As always, if you have any questions, please ask!
