Joe... Dear Parishioners of the Sandusky Catholic Community, This is the last time I pen a letter in the bulletin. I could not help noticing this morning when I was walking my dog, how nice it is to see the moon shine over the waters. It s nice to see it shining through the windows of the Church or after a late meeting when I am walking home. It s nice to step out in the morning or evening for a moment of mystery, to linger in the moon's shadows and wonder why God is the way He is. I could ask, Why the moon, but the head s answer would not touch the heart and it is the heart that is doing the asking. Now I believe that my heart would give me the answer if I would listen a bit. It would tell me that the moon is made to wonder about the other side of things. For who can look at the moon whose face has been turned toward us since the night it first rode in the sky and not wonder about the other side of the moon? We do not know but we are learning. Still it poises there as an eternal testimony to the old word: there are two sides to everything; the side you see and the other one. So I am conscious that this is the last bulletin letter I will write; it was my last school board meeting yesterday; it was my last finance meeting, last children s Mass, last First Communion. On this weekend, I am celebrating Masses at every parish. It will be the last time that I will gather with you as pastor in a spirit of joy and love in entering the greatest of Christian mysteries. But of course this is only partially true, for besides being the last time it is also the first. We never gathered on June ever before. The event is unique. It is a first, and it is also a last. It will never come back, never be repeated. In a sense it is all that happens on earth. Everything is but once, a kind of simultaneous first and last. Every new day is that, every night, every bird song, and every drop of rain. It is this aspect of alpha and omega that we must take pains to love if we would grasp the wholeness of life. Things are not always what we see; they are a great deal more. If you see only the alpha side, you see but one side. If you see only the one aspect of the first, you neglect the aspect of the last. So the joy of this Mass or this meeting or the first day as pastor is true for it is the first time. Its sadness is that it is the last. As a priest who has had to say goodbye to people I love and hello to people I will love, you get to know the ambivalence of life, that it is not one sided. The polarity between the two meets in a dialogue of love. This elemental dialogue seems to be deep in the nature of all reality and it is just a way of coming to grips that my time here in the Sandusky parishes was wonderful. I leave thankful and joyous. It is not easy to leave and enter the community of OLPH. Maybe that is where the mystery is found. I have been privileged to have had an ongoing dialogue with the Sandusky Catholic parishioners. There were good days and bad days. There were people who loved me and who tolerated me. There were those who had their suspicions and those who did not. The wonderful thing is that many of these differences were reconciled through the mystery of love and God s grace. I hope and pray for these parishes that had to develop a different vision and be more collaborative. It s hard but also joyous. Thanks for these last six years. May the rising sun brighten all your days and may the moon soften the darkness of your night. Amen. In Him, Fr. Joe
