Did you know that there are a group of women religious sisters who never leave their convent, but simply live a life dedicated solely to praying for the laity, religious, and priests of our diocese? The Sisters of the Visitation in Toledo came to the Diocese in 1915 and since that time have remained cloistered, devoting their life to praying for us. While in Toledo, I came to know the sisters very well, and before coming to Sandusky, I asked that they pray for our parishes in a special way. Each time they write to me, Mother Marie de Sales always states that the prayers for Holy Angels, Saint Mary s and Saints Peter and Paul Parishes are on their daily list! What an awesome gift to our community! In 1977, Pope Saint John Paul II, recognizing the importance of the apostolate of prayer, reintroduced to the Church a day of prayer first recommended by Pope Pius XII in 1953, known as Pro Orantibus Day a day of prayer for those who pray for us! The Holy Father asked that this be observed worldwide each year of the memorial of Our Lady s Presentation in the Temple, November 21. This year, the Visitation Sisters have asked if our parishes could assist them in their need. You see, unlike other religious in our diocese who exercise valuable public apostolates, the Visitation Sisters, who remain hidden from the public eye, remain primarily on donations to provide for their needs and to ensure the sustainability of their life of prayer. They have a modest monastery, but because of its age, it stands in need of many repairs. To assist them, we will take a second collection at the Masses celebrated on the weekend of November % of the collections will go directly to the Sisters. THE PEW POSITION VOTE IS IN! Last weekend the parishioners of Saint Mary's Parish voted on how to configure the pews on the sides of the church. With 597 people voting, 378 preferred the longer pews on the sides; 219 preferred the shorter pews. Therefore, when the pews are returned after being refinished, the longer pews will be placed on the outer side isles. Thanks for voting! The Catholic Parishes of Sandusky are looking for several people to help coordinate wedding liturgies. The ideal individuals will be wellorganized, extremely welcoming and joyful, be able to take a leadership role and conduct wedding rehearsals (after being trained), be willing to be present before and after a wedding (to set-up the church and prepare for Mass, etc.), and enjoy helping families who come to our beautiful churches to celebrate this sacrament. Training for New and Current Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion The only thing that compares to receiving Jesus in Holy Communion is the privilege of bringing Jesus to others! Our parishes have a great group of generous individuals who help distribute Holy Communion at Mass and/or to our local hospitals, care facilities, and the homebound. Training sessions have been scheduled in the coming weeks in order to re-commission current Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC) and to train new individuals who want to serve in this important way. If you are currently an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion either at Mass or taking communion to those who cannot attend Mass, you are required to attend one of the training sessions at your parish in order to continue serving in this ministry. If you are willing to be trained for this important ministry, please select one of the training sessions at your parish listed below. November 22 is the feast of St. Cecilia, patroness of musicians; thus during this week she is remembered for her role in Music Ministry. St. Cecilia has often been pictured through the centuries, seated at the organ, singing God s praises, or listening to a choir of angels. Appropriately, at this time, members of our Music Ministries in all three Sandusky Parishes, consisting of our Directors, Mass Accompanists, Cantors, Instrumentalists, and Choirs rededicate themselves to praising God through liturgy, music, and song. Pastoral musicians in our Sandusky Catholic Community will receive a special blessing during Masses on Nov. 18!

11 From Pope Francis' Message for World Day for the Poor (November 18, 2018) Countless initiatives are undertaken every day by the Christian community in order to offer closeness and a helping hand in the face of the many forms of poverty all around us. Often too, our cooperation with other initiatives inspired not by faith but by human solidarity, make it possible for us to provide help that otherwise we would have been unable to offer. The realization that in the face of so much poverty our capacity for action is limited, weak and insufficient, leads us to reach out to others so that, through mutual cooperation, we can attain our goals all the more effectively. We Christians are inspired by faith and by the imperative of charity, but we can also acknowledge other forms of assistance and solidarity that aim in part for the same goals, provided that we do not downplay our specific role, which is to lead everyone to God and to holiness. Dialogue between different experiences, and humility in offering our cooperation without seeking the limelight, is a fitting and completely evangelical response that we can give. In the service of the poor, there is no room for competition. Rather, we should humbly recognize that the Spirit is the source of our actions that reveal God s closeness and his answer to our prayers. When we find ways of drawing near to the poor, we know that the primacy belongs to God, who opens our eyes and hearts to conversion. The poor do not need self-promoters, but a love that knows how to remain hidden and not think about all the good it has been able to do. At the centre must always be the Lord and the poor. Anyone desirous of serving is an instrument in God s hands, a means of manifesting his saving presence. Saint Paul recalled this when he wrote to the Christians in Corinth who competed for the more prestigious charisms: The eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of you, nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you (1 Cor 12:21). Paul makes an important point when he notes that the apparently weaker parts of the body are in fact the most necessary (cf. v. 22), and that those we think less honourable we invest with the greater honour, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, which our more presentable parts do not require (vv ). Paul offers the community a basic teaching about charisms, but also about the attitude it should have, in the light of the Gospel, towards its weaker and needier members. Far be it from Christ s disciples to nurture feelings of disdain or pity towards the poor. Instead, we are called to honour the poor and to give them precedence, out of the conviction that they are a true presence of Jesus in our midst. As you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me (Mt 25:40).

13 Job Posting Director of Youth Faith Formation Location: Sandusky, OH Category: Youth Ministry Young Adult Ministry Terms: Full Time Employee Experience: 1-3 Years Education: Undergraduate Degree Base Pay: Salary The Catholic Parishes of Sandusky, Ohio (Holy Angels Parish; Saint Mary Parish; Saints Peter and Paul Parish) is seeking a full-time Director of Youth Faith Formation to oversee, develop and implement a comprehensive faith formation program for the youth (elementary, middle school, and high school) of the three (3) parishes. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, overseeing and implementing strategies for a comprehensive faith formation program serving pre-k through 12 th grade students, including specific programs to prepare individuals to receive the Sacraments (Baptism, First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation), Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, Rite of Christian Initiation of Children, Edge and Life Teen, as well as other evangelization efforts involving young people. The position involves some evenings, weekends, and occasional overnight travel. The ideal candidate is a faithful, practicing and high-energy Catholic who strives to guide youth and young adults into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and his Church. This person must have superior interpersonal skills, sound judgment, is well-organized, and is effective in presenting the Catholic Faith in an engaging and positive way. Qualifications: Must be a fully initiated Catholic in good standing. Possess excellent leadership, communication, organizational, administrative, and management skills; knowledge of adolescent and young adult culture; fluency in current social media practices and platforms; working knowledge of standard computer programs, including Microsoft Office; 1-3 years experience in youth and/or young adult ministry in a Catholic Church; and ideally hold a Bachelor s Degree in Theology. If your child would like to sing for this Mass practice begins Nov. 18 th from 9:45-10:20 am., in the music room. On Christmas Eve, please bring your child to Holy Angel s Choir Room at 3:15 p.m. (Dec. 24 th.) We will begin singing at 3:30 p.m. in the church!
