I found out it was very good and one person said he attends every year for it gets him in the mood for Christmas. I like to attend the children s Christmas program which I always finds get me in the mood. It is also nice for me and my dog Cillian to take late night walks in the downtown area and see the lights. This past Sunday, I saw Santa sneaking in the back of the Santa House while a pretty group of people were waiting to see him and get a photo with him. This Sunday is the last Sunday before Christmas. All of us want it to be a dream time. Although the weather has been warm, we take in greens and trees and we want the freshness in our homes as we face the ever darkening days and the inevitable cold. We put lights everywhere and light candles to keep the dark away. We love songs like I ll be home for Christmas, and I Dream of a White Christmas, because these carols provoke memories and dreams about what Christmas is all about. This weekend we have Mary visiting Elizabeth. We are touched by all the stories of the season because even if the details are lost, the heart beats on. The old stories still have power and Mary and Elizabeth, with the shepherds and the angels reveal a degree of profound lasting beauty. There is a severe exquisiteness that is beyond pretty. We walk outside and see the stars in the night sky and we connect to the first Christmas where a star led the Magi. Christmas is a test of depth and a time of symbols. We know that John the Baptist is the depth finder as is Mary and Joseph. Good symbols come from depth and we need living symbols for they are depth gauges of our lives. I believe that is why so many make it to Church on Christmas. They like Santa and Rudolph but these symbols are not deep enough. They want to be with people who sing Silent Night and the Church is dominated by the crib and greenery and, for at least for a week or so, we are a community who follow our deepest instincts and inclinations of our heart. It is the season when we start to believe again and we know there is a cosmic wisdom that is immensely refreshing that goes beyond good and bad and our small thoughts. It is gooder than good, and we start, like Mary does in the gospel today, to listen and serve the great matter. As Elizabeth said, Blessed are you who believe that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled. So for a few days we don t organize the world to suit us. We serve a quality without a name. C.S. Lewis once said that the problem most of us have is that our God is too small. Christmas is the time that we bow and acknowledge the great God in our midst who came to be among us. This is the work of Christmas. Let us use this last few days before the great celebration to get in the mood. It is a great help to all of us. God bless, Fr. Joe

Zion Lutheran - Holy Angels Thanksgiving Dinner Special blessings to a very special group of volunteers that made the 33rd annual Thanksgiving Dinner a huge success. This year we served or delivered approximately 1,300 dinners to our community and surrounding areas. None of which could have been accomplished without a dedicated team that gave so generously of their time, talent, and financial support. We also extend our sincere thanks to the many local businesses that donated food, supplies, and other items that were needed for the preparation of dinner. Please consider joining the individual teams that make the Thanksgiving dinner run so well. Also, a special recognition to Jaden Moore. Jaden, a confirmation candidate, gave up her Friday morning and helped with the huge (and not much fun) task of post Thanksgiving clean up. Finally, a BIG thank you to the very special unknown person who baked and donated 25 delicious homemade pumpkin pies! WE THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH! MONEY COUNTERS NEEDED! Can you spare one Monday (sometimes Tuesday) morning every 5 weeks to help count money? Some math required but if you can balance your checkbook, you can probably help count money. 9 All Things Made New Again Advent 2015 (4 of 4) By Deacon Jeff Claar At the Last Supper Christ instituted the Paschal Sacrifice and banquet, by which the Sacrifice of the Cross is continuously made present in the Church for Christ took the bread and the chalice, gave thanks, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat and drink: this is my Body, this is the chalice of my Blood. Do this in memory of me. Hence, the Church has arranged the entire celebration of the Liturgy of the Eucharist in parts corresponding to precisely these words and action of Christ. (GIRM 72) First of all, the altar is prepared and made ready when on it are placed the corporal, purificator, Missal, and chalice. (73) We are reintroducing the smaller corporal at each Mass as a reminder of the important action taking place. The offerings are then brought forward. It is a praiseworthy practice for the bread and wine to be presented to the faithful. Even money or gifts for the poor, brought by the faithful or collected in church, are acceptable. (73) Local collections for the poor, such as a representative Second Sunday bag, may be brought forward if the parish desires. During communion, the Deacon, if present will always distribute the Cup at the side of the Priest to emphasize his role as Ordinary Minister of the Cup. In his absence, an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion will take his place. It is our hope that these changes will enhance everyone s experience of the Mass and truly make it the source and summit of our faith! May we finish strong this Advent season so that we can truly rejoice at the Birth of our Savior. Have a Blessed Christmas. Opening of our Holy Door During the Year of Mercy Pope Francis has extended the tradition of a Holy Door to various churches throughout the year. Bishop Thomas has designated the Sorrowful Mother Shrine (4106 State Route 269, 6 miles south of Bellevue) as 1 of 4 sites throughout the Diocese of Toledo to have a Holy Door. A ceremonial Opening of our Holy Door will take place following the 11:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, December 13, A Holy Door symbolizes the fact that Jesus is the door to the Father. Walking in faith through a Holy Door symbolizes that a person is sincerely striving to more from the darkness of sin into the light of faith and working to enter into a closer relationship with Jesus. The Holy Door at the Sorrowful Mother Shrine will be open daily from 8:00 a.m. to dusk. Confessions will be heard daily from 10-11:00 a.m. Monday to Saturday and 3-4:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon and 8-9:00 a.m., 10-11:00 a.m. Sunday mornings. A Shrine Priest will also be available daily in the Pilgrim Center to assist any who come to the Shrine seeking a closer relationship to Christ. The Year of Mercy will be a time of grace for all and the Sorrowful Mother Shrine in Bellevue invites you to come to our holy place to celebrate the love and mercy of God. Pope Francis has invited the Church around the world to participate in the Jubilee Year of Mercy. One way parishes, religious houses and institutions in the Diocese of Toledo will commemorate the Year of Mercy is within the very prayer that expresses our encounter with God s mercy: the Mass. Beginning December 8, 2015, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and throughout the Advent season, our priests have been directed by Bishop Thomas to use Form II of the Penitential Act at all weekday and weekend Masses. The wording liturgically focuses our attention on God s love and mercy toward us all.
