Jeff Walker Dear Friends, Almost six weeks ago, on Ash Wednesday, we gave up something for Lent. At Mass, we lost the Gloria and the Alleluia. We ve been missing instrumental music and decorations in the church. This past week, in many churches, the statues and crucifixes were veiled and we lost sight of those reminders of holiness. On Holy Thursday we will lose the sound of the bells in the tower and at the consecration at Mass. The holy water will be missing from the fonts. On Good Friday we ll lose the Mass itself. The altar will be stripped. We will lose the presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament the Tabernacle will be empty. Everything seems to have been taken away from us, and Good Friday leaves us with a feeling of emptiness and silence. The Easter Vigil begins in darkness, for we will have even lost the light. But a new fire is about to be lit and the flame is about to spread There is no Mass like the Easter Vigil Mass. Normally, Mass involves two parts: The Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The Easter Vigil has two additional liturgies. Mass begins with the Liturgy of Light which starts outside of the church with the blessing of the Easter Fire. The paschal candle leads us into the Church and the light spreads around the Church as the Resurrection of Christ is solemnly proclaimed in the ancient chant known as the Exsultet. Then, an expanded Liturgy of the Word recounts the important moments in the Story of Salvation from the Old Testament from Genesis to Exodus to the prophesy of a new and everlasting covenant. The Church comes alive with lights and bells and the singing of God s glory and the return of the Alleluia. After the Liturgy of the Word comes the Liturgy of Initiation. This is the night where we welcome new members into the Family of God as we celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist with adults who wish to enter the Church. As the whole congregation witnesses these Sacraments being celebrated with those folks who have been in RCIA this last year, we are reminded of our own Baptism and Confirmation. The Mass stretches on into the night and carries on with the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The joy of the Resurrection cannot be contained to just one day. We begin to celebrate Easter as soon as the sun sets on Holy Saturday with the Vigil. The Octave of Easter means that we celebrate each of the 8 days as if it were Easter Day itself. And the Easter Season continues on for 50 days until the celebration of Pentecost. But it all begins with the magnificent Easter Vigil. Join us at all three parishes for this Queen of all Vigils beginning at 8:30pm on Saturday. We hope to see you there! Yours in Christ, Fr. Jeff
