4 Readings Deuteronomy When you have come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and settle in it, 2 you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his name. 3 You shall go to the priest who is in office at that time, and say to him, Today I declare to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us. 4 When the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the Lord your God, 5 you shall make this response before the Lord your God: A wandering Aramean was my ancestor; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a great nation, mighty and populous. 6 When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by imposing hard labour on us, 7 we cried to the Lord, the God of our ancestors; the Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. 8 The Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with a terrifying display of power, and with signs and wonders; 9 and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O Lord, have given me. You shall set it down before the Lord your God and bow down before the Lord your God. 11 Then you, together with the Levites and the aliens who reside among you, shall celebrate with all the bounty that the Lord your God has given to you and to your house. Psalm , Those who dwell in the shelter of the Most High: who abide under the shadow of the Almighty, 2 They will say to the Lord You are my refuge and my stronghold: my God in whom I trust. 9 The Lord himself is your refuge: you have made the Most High your stronghold. 4

5 10 Therefore no harm will befall you: nor will any scourge come near your tent. 11 For he will command his angels: to keep you in all your ways. 12 They will bear you up in their hands: lest you dash your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread on the lion and the adder: the young lion and the serpent you will trample under foot. 14 You have set your love upon me, says the Lord, and therefore I will deliver you: I will lift you out of danger, because you have known my name. 15 When you call upon me I will answer you: I will be with you in trouble, I will rescue you and bring you to honour. 16 With long life I will satisfy you: and fill you with my salvation. Romans For Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. 5 Moses writes concerning the righteousness that comes from the law, that the person who does these things will live by them. 6 But the righteousness that comes from faith says, Do not say in your heart, Who will ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 or Who will descend into the abyss? (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. 11 The scripture says, No one who believes in him will be put to shame. 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. 13 For, Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. 5

6 Luke Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. 3 The devil said to him, If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread. 4 Jesus answered him, It is written, One does not live by bread alone. 5 Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And the devil said to him, To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours. 8 Jesus answered him, It is written, Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him. 9 Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written, He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you, 11 and On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone. 12 Jesus answered him, It is said, Do not put the Lord your God to the test. 13 When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time. 14 Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. 15 He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. When we are tested and wrestle alone, famished for bread when the world offers stone, nourish us, God, by your word and your way, food that sustains us by night and by day. 2. When in the desert we cry for relief, pleading for paths marked by certain belief, lift us to love you beyond sign and test, trusting your presence, our only true rest. 3. When we are tempted to barter our souls, trading the truth for power to control, teach us to worship and praise only you, seeking your will in the work that we do. 4. When we have struggled and searched through the night, sorting and sifting the wrong from the right, Savior, surround us with circles of care, angels of healing, of hope, and of prayer. 8 Notices and Parish News Thank You!!! A big Thank You to the wonderful young people we have in our community who transformed/transfigured/metamorphosed/whatever! What could have been a boring talk into a snazzy event. Most of them were handed a script as they began their skit and they handled the situation with aplomb; these kids can do anything! So thanks to Hamish, Bec, Cooper and Alexandra who earned a big round of applause for her slick salesgirl piece with the Transfigure product. And thanks to the behind the scenes artisans Rev. Rachel and Kay Rands. Pure magic what they can do. Graham Lenten Studies We Start This Week! There are signup sheets for the three Lenten study groups (Wednesday 7:30pm, 7pm Tuesday MSG and 10:30am Tuesday Women s Group) available in the Narthex. The text All I have is yours: Forty Days to Freedom by Michael McGirr is available for purchase from the office for $10. There are some great ideas as to how to keep Lent in it too. There is also a small book, Daily Reflections for Lent: Not by Bread Alone 2019, available for purchase ($5.00) at the office. In accessible English, this text contains interesting meditations and prayers to accompany the daily readings. Lunch Club Today! 12pm Our next Lunch Club is on today in the Parish Centre, from 12 midday. Cost - by donation. Kate Lord s Anglican Church Union Lecture 15 March, 7:30pm Kate Lord will be giving a lecture on Salt and Light and Great Circle Navigation: Reflections on a Journey into Navy Chaplaincy, here at St Paul s Canterbury. Supper will be served afterwards. Quiet day 16 March, 10am The Wellspring Community invites you to a quiet day on Saturday 16 March, 10:00am to 4:00pm at the St Oswalds Anglican Church, 100 High St Glen Iris. Led by Rev d Glenn Loughrey, the day s theme is Listen here and reflect: Time in the Wominjeka Reconcilation Garden. A donation of $20pp would be appreciated. Margaret Christianson 17 March Margaret Christianson has decided to move on from St Paul s, but wishes to express her thanks for all our care. She will be farewelling the parish on Sunday 17 March

9 Name Badges If you have ordered a name badge it is now in the porch for collection. Please WEAR IT. Cost of name badges has been steadily going up and to cover the postage charged as well as the cost of the badge, we ask that you make a donation of $15.00 into the offertory plate. Bp Baynton's paintings Bishop Baynton was a member of the parish in his retirement before moving to Queensland, and an accomplished artist, as many of us know. His son has a collection of the Bishop s work but is also moving to Queensland and can t take it all with him. He has offered us a portion of their collection which will be available for viewing in the Parish Centre. Paintings are for sale in exchange for your generous donation to support supplies for the church s hospital in Gaza (ABM) and the Music Fund. TMA The newest Melbourne Anglican is available in the Narthex. Make sure to grab one and open up to page 10: our very own Andrew Flint is featured in association with the fantastic work he and the Australian Karen Foundation are doing on the Thai- Myanmar boarder. Congratulations Andrew! Keep up the great work! ABM Stamps for Mission A reminder that we do collect used postage stamps that can be left in the Narthex in the labelled container. 10 A prayer for Lent God of wilderness and water, your Son was baptized and tempted as we are. Guide us through this season, that we may not avoid struggle, but open ourselves to blessing, through the cleansing depths of repentance and the heaven-rending words of the Spirit. Amen. 11 You will find in your pew sheets (or on the pews) Anglican Board of Mission Lent and Good Friday gift / donation envelopes. ABM is collecting for a number of very important mission causes this year. These include: Gender and Governance Initiative in Zambia The Anglican church in Zambia needs your help to tackle child marriage and gender based violence. This project seeks to make a big difference for women and their children by addressing poverty and education within all sectors of the Zambian community. Check out this video ( if you want to learn more about the program. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mission Fund This is your opportunity to donate to fund which supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander church. In 2018 one of the grant applications came from the burgeoning Anglican youth group in Bamaga, a small community at the tip of Cape York. The youth, many of whom had never travelled outside the community, had dreamed of visiting Dubbo in NSW to spend time with NATSIAC Chairperson, Rev d Gloria Shipp and local Aboriginal Elders. They had raised money for their flights but needed assistance with local meals, hostel accommodation and bus charter. Their visit was a high point for churches in both communities with the exchange of culture, stories and new ties that bind together the worldwide church. This year the aim is to raise $100, St Luke s Rehabilitation Centre in Lebanon Have you got a sweet tooth? This rehab centre supports and empowers children who are mentally challenged. You can help these young people by contributing to the purchase a chocolate manufacturing machine. Creating and selling chocolates enables these young people to actively participate in their community. The Australian Anglican church is the sole funder of this program. 11
