4 Revelation After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb! And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, singing, Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen. Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from? I said to him, Sir, you are the one that knows. Then he said to me, These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; or the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Psalm 34 Alan Rees 4 Next week s readings for 22nd Sunday after Pentecost: Joshua a, Psalm Thessalonians Matthew
5 1 John See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. Matthew When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Caesar 5

Inquiries to Margaret Irvine: TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LAYING OF THE FOUNDATION STONE OF ST PAUL S CHURCH, CANTERBURY: A special service was held on Saturday 7th November 1914, at 330pm, of the Laying of the Foundation stone of St Paul s church by the Archbishop. A resolution was moved and supported by the Very Reverend the Dean, seconded by Sir Robert Best and supported by R Beckett, Esq: That the new Church of St Paul, Canterbury, will supply an urgent spiritual need of the Church of England in this locality, and we commend the present effort of St Paul s Vestry to the good-will and continued generous support of the people of this District. WELCOME A warm welcome to our retired Bishop Barbara Darling at our service today. Bishop Barbara had her farewell service last Sunday afternoon which was a wonderful occasion of thanksgiving for her ministry among us. Bishop Barbara will for the next few months, be settling into her new home, have a holiday and then she will be considering the next part of her ministry/life journey. CHURCHWARDENS, PARISH COUNCIL AND INCUMBENCY COMMITTEE NOMINATIONS forms are now available in the narthex for churchwardens, parish council members and incumbency committee. This coming year we will be having a time of discernment as we together explore our mission here in Canterbury. Please prayerfully consider if you can give your gift of time and wisdom and energy. In the narthex you will see a poster with a description of the role of vicar, churchwardens, parish council and parishioners. Nominations need to be to the vicar by the 18th November.
7 AN AUSTRALIAN LECTIONARY APBA 2015 YEAR B MARK: The Australian Lectionary APBA for 2015 Year B Mark is now in the office. If you ordered a copy, it is now available to collect. The cost is $12.95 including GST. LIGHT UP 2014: St Paul's would like to participate with other churches in Boroondara to bring attention to the good news of Christmas by adding lights to the outside of our church. Does anyone have twinkling lights they no longer use that we could have? They would need to be safe for external use. Is there anyone who no longer puts up twinkling lights, who would be prepared to be responsible for the assembly and disassembly of theses? The celebratory dates suggested are from Saturday 13th to Sunday 21st from 8pm to 10pm. Please contact the church office or Ros White. TOMATOES: Graham Scott has an oversupply of tomato seedlings. All free to good, well prepared garden beds, so long as a donation flows to the church coppers! There is one pot full of Green Zebra Tomatoes and another of a red variety which give huge and luscious tomatoes. Contact the office if you are interested. PEW SHEET DEADLINE: Please ensure your notices for the pew sheet are received in the office by 5pm on Wednesday. Thank you! A GIFT FOR JACQUI SMITH, OUR THEOLOGICAL STUDENT: If you would like to contribute to a gift for Jacqui, there are envelopes in the narthex. Jacqui s last Sunday will be the 16th November, APPRECIATION: Elizabeth-Anne and all of her family would like to thank the very many people of St Paul s who welcomed Lyle in to this community over the past couple of years. There were so many kindnesses, big and small, that were appreciated and valued. They helped make this time a warm and rich one in Mum s life, softening the feeling of the loss of her oldest and dearest friends that would have been caused by the move from her home town. With a smile from all of us, and a last smile from Lyle. 7
