PALM SUNDAY From ancient times the palm tree, because of its graceful trunk, was considered a princely tree and its branches became a symbol of victory and were also used for decoration. Victorious Roman soldiers carried palm branches when parading in Rome. As far back as the fourth century, Christians in Jerusalem reenacted this event in the place where it actually happened. They gathered on the Mount of Olives in the late afternoon carrying palm branches and went through the gates of the city to the Church of the resurrection. The reenacting of Christ s entry into Jerusalem spread to Churches around the world.

Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Page 6 Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree? Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble, Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree? Were you there when they pierced Him in the side? Were you there when they pierced Him in the side? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they pierced Him in the side? Were you there when the sun refused to shine? Were you there when the sun refused to shine? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when the sun refused to shine? Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb? Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb? Oh, sometimes it cause me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb? Hymn - The Magnificat LIVING HOLY WEEK The Washing of Feet Although the practice of washing of the feet had fallen into disuse for a long time in parish celebrations, it was restored in 1955 by Pius XII as a part of the general reform of the Holy Week Liturgies. The Gospel read at the Holy Thursday liturgy depicts Jesus as the Teacher and Lord who humbly serves His disciples to performing this extraordinary gesture which goes beyond the laws of hospitality. In an understandable way of accepting the evangelical command of the Lord, who came to serve and not to be served. GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE On Good Friday, Mass is not celebrated anywhere in the world. Instead the solemn Liturgy of the Lord s Passion in celebrated normally in the afternoon, Holy Communion is distributed from the bread that was consecrated at the Mass on Holy Thursday. Even though Good Friday is not a holy day of obligation most Churches are filled to capacity for this powerful celebration of the passion and death of our Lord. In 1482 the feast was added to the Roman Missal under the title of Our Lady of Compassion. In 1814, Pope Puis VII changed the feast s name to Our Lady of Sorrows, in thanksgiving for his release from prison in France where he had been held by Napoleon. The Holy Father extended the feast to the whole Church. The feast of Our Lady of Sorrows was eventually moved to September 15 by Pope Pius X in The Season of Lent THE ENTRANCE INTO JERUSALEM Six days before the Passover, When the Lord came into the city of Jerusalem, the children ran to meet Him. In their hands, they carried palm branches and with loud voices cried out. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed are you who have come to your abundant mercy. O gates, lift high your heads, grow higher, ancient doors. Let Him enter, the King of glory! Who is this King of glory? He is the Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed are You, who have come in Your abundant mercy. (Psalm 24 (23) 9-10 SPY WEDNESDAY The Wednesday of Holy Week is sometimes referred to as Spy Wednesday. Judas went to the chief priests on the day before the Last Supper and offered to hand Jesus over for 30 pieces of silver. Lent 2011

6 Page 7 The Life of Jesus Matthew 27: 33-35,37-38, Mark 15: 22-28; 23:33, Luke 22:33, John 19: THE CRUCIFIXION Jesus finally reached the Place of the Skull where He was to suffer death. Following the custom of the Jews, He was first offered a cup of wine mixed with myrrh which was supposed to serve as a narcotic and to lessen the suffering of the condemned. Jesus put His lips to the cup, but He did not drink it for the world was to be cheated of none of His suffering. Jesus was then stripped of His clothes, laid Him out-stretched on the cross, and drove nails through His hands and feet, fixing them to the planks. Having completed the rudest part of their chore the executioners heaved the cross upright on the ground, dropped it into a hole which had been dug and stamped the earth around the foot of the cross. Then they crucified two other thieves in the same way and set up crosses on either side of Christ. Above the head of Jesus they placed a plague in Hebrew, Greek and Latin., Pilate s inscription of the charge against Him, Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. When the Jews saw the plaque, they were offended and sent a delegation to Pilate asking him to change it. Pilate said, I am the King of the Jews. What I have written, I have written. As His enfeebled body struggled against the advance of death, nature reflected His anguish. Though it was only a little past midday, the sun was now completely obscured and the whole countryside was enveloped in a hazy twilight. The crowd which had gathered on Golgotha was only half discernible to the mysterious dark, but the crowd of Christ stood clearly silhouetted against the gloom. Summary The title over the head of Christ on the cross was meant to be a description of His crime, the reason for His shameful death. But, as the providence of God arranged it, the title accurately expressed Christ s position as head of the old Israel and of the new Israel. The Life of Christ Catholic Press TO THE LORD OF LIFE WE PRAY: You offer to Your people the Bread of Life, bring us out of death, we pray. When we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim Your death, until You come again. Now began the darkest hours of Jesus suffering. He was astride a kind of support which prevented His transfixed limits being torn from the spikes by the weight of His Body. But the weight of His weary arms alone deepened the wounds of the nails and crushed the plexus of tiny nerves in His palms, the slightest movement intensified His agony a thousand fold. You offer to Your people the Word of Love, heal our deafness, we pray. You offer to Your people communion in Your Body, save us from division, we pray. You offer to the world the promise of eternal life, take to Yourself all those who have died, we pray. The Magnificat

7 Page 8 LIVES OF THE SAINTS Occasionally in this space will appear a short article covering the lives of the saints, especially with reference to those saints whose likeness appear on the stained glass windows in the church and chapel, or whose statue is present in the chapel area or the candle room area. LIVES OF THE SAINTS May the wisdom of the Saints inspire us in our daily lives: April 9 St.Pierre Teilhard dechardin April 10 St. Magdalen of Canossa April 11 St. Stanislaus, Bishop April 11 St. Gemma Galgani April 12 St. Julius, Pope April 13 St. Martin I, Pope April 14 Sts Tiburtius, Valerian & Maximus April 15 St. Paternus, Bishop ST. STANISLAUS Bishop of Poland and Bishop of Cracow Stanislaus was born into a noble family. He was educated in Liege then later ordained a priest and made a canon of Cracow Cathedral. Stanislaus was named Bishop of Cracow. He was a zealous reformer, an ardent preacher and a friend of the poor, but Stanislaus was plagued with the challenge of attempting to connect the conduct of King Boleslaus. King Boleslaus was known as the cruel king and noted for his vindictiveness and lustful way of life. Stanislaus repeatedly rebuked the king and the monarch made hollow promises he would reform, but continued his ways. Stanislaus joined the Polish nobles in a plot to overthrow the king, but this was never verified. According to legend King Boleslaus was excommunicated by Stanislaus. Enraged Boleslaus ordered three guards to execute this inferring individual in the chapel of St. Michael, where he had taken refuge. When the guards refused, it drove the king into a frenzy. King Boleslaus himself, rushed into the church and killed Stanislaus. In retaliation, Pope Gregory VII put Poland under an interdict until Boleslaus was finally driven into exile. ST. MAGDALEN OF CANOSSA Foundress of Daughters of Charity Canosian Born into a noble Italian family, Magdalen was five when her father, the Marquis of Canossa died. Her mother soon remarried, abandoned her children and their uncles hired a harsh unsympathetic governess to raise them. At the age of fifteen, Magdalen announced to her family that she wanted to be a Nun. She entered the Carmel Order but soon returned home to handle her father s estate. Wanting to rid the world of poverty, Magdalen began working with troubled girls in dangerous areas of the city, Before long she was serving in hospitals, buying catechisms for local churches and bringing food to the poor. Other women joined Magdalen and later she started a small school to educate girls and give them religious instruction. The school was successful and became the foundation of the Canossian Daughters of Charity, The purpose of the charity was three-fold: To educate the poor; To serve the sick; and to teach catechism. Over the next 20 years Magdalen founded houses across Italy and arranged a training program for teachers in rural areas. She wanted to eradicate moral poverty. Magdalen always personally served the most neglected children willing to become poor with the poor, as Pope Pius once wrote. Magdalen saw Jesus love in everyone. The Canossian Daughters of Charity continues around the world today. Lord, With the inspiration of Magdalen of Canossa free us from the narrow sphere of our own comfort and open our hearts to less fortunate. Help us to erase spiritual as well as material poverty and create a just world for everyone. Amen
