Thanks! 60th anniversary celebration On Saturday, July 14, we will have a special Liturgy at the 5:00 Mass in honor of the 60th anniversary of St. Bernadette Parish. Auxiliary Bishop Jeffrey R. Haines will be here to celebrate this special event with us. We will have a reception after Mass. We are asking a $10 donation per adult to help defray costs. RSVP forms will be enclosed in the next monthly parishioner letter and will be available in the gathering area. Film screening: MILWAUKEE MILWAUKEE chronicles the lives of those living in the ZIP code that incarcerates the highest percentage of black men in America. Through the intimate stories of three residents, we witness the high toll mass incarceration takes on individuals and families that make up the community. The film not only examines Milwaukee s ZIP code 53206, but also illuminates the story of people from across the United States who live with the daily effects of mass incarceration. 3 IN OUR PARISH COMMUNITY Northwest Catholic School News May Open Enrollment ~ There is still time to register your child for the school year. The Choice Open Enrollment period ends May 20. You must complete the application using the following link: Please contact Linda Goeden at , ext. 301, if you have questions or need assistance. Trustee nominations Wisconsin State Statute stipulates that trustees are to be elected from and by the congregation. Father Greg has nominated Nick Chaconas for another term as trustee. If you would like to nominate another candidate, the nominee must be a practicing Catholic, a registered member of the parish, and at least 25 years old. Trustee nominations must be supported with the signatures of ten parishioners. Nomination forms are available in the gathering area or may be obtained through the parish office. Completed forms may be placed in the offertory basket or turned in to the parish office by May 28. If there are at least two candidates, a trustee election will be scheduled. Donate Festival basket raffle items Our Festival Committee welcomes donations of themed baskets for the popular basket raffle. You do not need to assemble the baskets, just donate the items for them, or donate a large empty basket. We will also accept monetary donations to help offset the expenses of the basket raffle. If you are interested in donating items for a basket, please contact Mary Kucharski, Donate to the Festival rummage sale Are you doing some spring cleaning and wondering what to do with your unwanted/unneeded, gently-used items? 4 St. Bernadette Summer Reading Club Are you an avid reader looking for something fun to do this summer? Join St. Bernadette s Summer Reading Club! We will be reading three selections; you can read one, two, or all three of them. Join us each month for a group discussion in the air-conditioned St. Bernadette Parish Office. JUNE SELECTION: The Ninth Hour: A Novel, by Alice McDermott Summary: A magnificent new novel from one of America s finest writers a powerfully affecting story spanning the twentieth century of a widow and her daughter and the nuns who serve their Irish-American community in Brooklyn. On a dim winter afternoon, a young Irish immigrant opens the gas taps in his Brooklyn tenement. He is determined to prove to the subway bosses who have recently fired him, to his badgering, pregnant wife that the hours of his life belong to himself alone. In the aftermath of the fire that follows, Sister St. Savior, an aging nun appears, unbidden, to direct the way forward for his widow and his unborn child. The characters we meet, from Sally, the unborn baby at the beginning of the novel, who becomes the center of the story, to the nuns whose personalities we come to know and love, to the neighborhood families with whose lives they are entwined, are all rendered with extraordinary sympathy and McDermott s trademark lucidity and intelligence. Alice McDermott s The Ninth Hour is a crowning achievement by one of the premiere writers at work in America today. About the author: Alice McDermott is the author of seven previous novels. That Night, At Weddings and Wakes, and After This were all finalists for the Pulitzer Prize. Her stories and essays have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The New Yorker, Harper s Magazine, and elsewhere. She is the Richard A. 5 JULY SELECTION: Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life, by Fr. Richard Rohr Summary: In Falling Upward, Fr. Richard Rohr seeks to help readers understand the tasks of the two halves of life and to show them that those who have fallen, failed, or "gone down" are the only ones who understand "up." Most of us tend to think of the second half of life as largely about getting old, dealing with health issues, and letting go of life, but the whole thesis of this book is exactly the opposite. In fact, it is not a loss but somehow actually a gain, as we have all seen with elders who have come to their fullness. This book explains why the second half of life can and should be full of spiritual richness. About the Author: Fr. Richard Rohr is a globally recognized ecumenical teacher bearing witness to the universal awakening within Christian mysticism and the Perennial Tradition. He is a Franciscan priest of the New Mexico Province and founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation ( in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he also serves as Academic Dean of the Living School for Action and Contemplation. Fr. Richard's teaching is grounded in the Franciscan alternative orthodoxy--practices of contemplation and self-emptying, expressing itself in radical compassion, particularly for the socially marginalized. July meeting date and time: Tuesday, July 31, 2018, 6:30PM AUGUST SELECTION: Story of a Soul: The Autobiography of St. Thérèse of Lisieux (The Little Flower) Summary: Two and a half years before her death in 1897 at the age of 24, as Thérèse Martin began writing down her childhood memories at the request of her blood sisters in the Lisieux Carmel, few could have guessed the eventual outcome. Yet this story, first published in 1898 in a highly edited version, quickly became a modern spiritual classic, read by millions and translated into dozens of languages around the world. Here, expressed with all of Thérèse's original spontaneity and fervor, we rediscover the great themes of her spirituality: confidence and love, the little way, abandonment to God's merciful love, and her mission in the church and world today.
